A good, standard aromatherapy book

If you're just getting interested in aromatherapy, this book is a good one to start with. I started with other books on the subject, but am glad I have this in my library. If you already know a fair bit about aromatherapy, you probably already know most of what's in this book. Even though this book was published originally in 1988, it is still full of valid facts and observations. Nothing about what has been written has changed.

In the book Tisserand has listed case histories where use of essential oils has helped a variety of problems, both physical and mental. He gives good background of aromatherapy's historical origins, and makes us aware of the different types of aromatherapy--holistic, medical/clinical and aesthetic. There is a chapter on essential oils, which includes distilling information and traditional maladies certain oils are used for. My favorite is the chapter on home remedies. I'm a home remedy freak--can't have too many of those.

as detailed as length allows

This is a solidly good book on Ayurveda. The author describes in a very readable manner all the essential points of Ayurveda including the constitutional types, five tastes, tissues, channels, etc.

A lot of these subjects are not addressed by more mainstream authors, perhaps because they think their audience will be bored. However, I think they are essential to a strong understanding of Ayurveda, and I think any serious student will appreciate them.

Furthermore, the author's style does not cram in too many unnecessary details, so the explanation of each subject is easy to glide through without heavy wading.

All of this is a pretty amazing accomplishment for such a little book -- this is a slim one. For those who have studied very little Ayurveda, this is an excellent starting point.

Perhaps the only interesting addition would be more personal information and case histories -- but this is hardly a surprising lack, since Ms. Heyn is more an herbologist than a doctor.

I think this book will please anyone who wants to learn about Ayurveda, beginner or advanced.

An excellent handbook for the serious practitioner

This book is excellent for the learner who is progressing from a beginners level to medium level competency. It covers the main areas of the subject with clarity and allows the reader to explore the complexities of the subject. I would recommend it to anyone who is commencing on the path to being an expert practitioner and also to the person who has some experience in the subject.

This is definately a book for midwives or aromatherapists taking an active part in a clients pregnancy and labour. Denise is exceptional in her field and is certainly making a effort to bring down the boundries, incorporating aromatherapy into a field that is dominated by the current medical field. I certainly found this book informative, if some what heavy duty reading with all the clinical back up, but understand the necessity thereof. The only reason why I gave four instead of five stars to this book was that I had really hoped that there would have been more illustrations and techniques on the massage aspect of aromatherapy during pregnancy.

Attractive book for beginners with compact information regarding
aromatherapy. Has step-by-step guide to aromatherapy massage technique and shiatsu. I find the aromatherapy part quite short in comparison to the massage part. Very easy to read and has attraactive illustrations.

Good but could be better
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.

This book is full of practical information for seduction by scent, setting the mood for love. There is a section on sensual massage, and a very good discussion of essential oils to use. There even are recipes given for an aftershave, sensual foods, aromatherapy blends to try out for your first attempt, thoughtfully with the necessary precautions. I was left with a feeling that the book could've been more visually arresting, however. It's a great book nonetheless, so don't just take my word for it and see for yourself.

Small Book but Some Good Receipes
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2003-05-16
I have been trying to order this book for a while but each time something went wrong. I am happy to say I finally received the book and in record time from one of the best sellers at Market Place. I was surprised how small the book was with little or no photos showing the project or even the step by step guides. Granted the receipes are simple and easy to follow written guidelines I just feel cheated if there is no pictures. Overall I am going to rate the book a 4 because of the simplistic nature of the receipes I am excited to start trying them. I sell soaps on the side (when I am not book selling) and I find some of the best receipes are 3-5 ingrediants and takes 5 minutes to prepare. The hardcover is nice and tight the book itself is small but text size is normal.I did not realize that a big portion of the book (half) would be on candlemaking. While interesting it is not what I needed. There is approx. 33 soap/bath beauty receipes of which I will use about 75-80% of so I do like the book. I would of given 5 stars but they lost one star because of the lack of Pictures. (Dj has a nice one. I recommend you cannot go wrong-Too simple for the professional soaper, I am just thrilled it doesn't call for all the complicated ones I have to do. As a Gift I would Highly Recommend.

Peppermint And Strawberries For Your Cat!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-13
This book is not only very informative, it's very interesting as well. Who would have thought that nasturtiums have a natural antibiotic effect? Or that peppermint is good for your cat's travel sickness and strawberries help relieve your cat's dry cough.

The book covers Aromatherapy, Homoeopathy, Herbal Medicine, Bach Flowers and Acupuncture. First aid tips and handling emergencies are included as well. The book describes common diseases and how you and your veterinarian can treat them. It even shows you how to administer the treatment. It's not a big book, only 128 pages, but I've found those pages have quite a bit of useful information even if I never choose to administer some of the therapies discussed. I did get lost among the abbreviations and latin terms used for homoeopathic therapies, however, there is so much more to this book and I learned so much from it that I'm glad I have it on my bookshelf. I'm using this book to help maintain my cat's healthy life.

This book is definately an informative and interesting resource for all cat owners to have.
