I've been doing aromatheraputic work for over 8 years. I have my own reference materials, I also have a huge library of texts. I love this book. It is such a reliable basic. If you want a great place to start, this is it.

Roberta Wilson has created a very useful, friendly, fun book. I have several books on aromatherapy and essential oils, and this is the one I refer to the most often. Ms. Wilson has included a reference section, which provides the folklore & herbal heritage, medicinal uses, emotional effects, primary actions, and cautions of each oil. There are many recipies to try and follow, along with suggestions for creating my own formulas, as well as ways to use the blends, such as in a diffuser, straight from the mixture bottle, etc. A resource guide, recommended reading, and bibliography are in the back of the book. I have other books on aromatherapy, but this one is the cornerstone of my collection, and the one I use most often.

Very comprehensible and helpful for those using natural products such as aromatherapy.

The author also gives specific guidelines for those who wish to eliminate chemicals from the bath and beauty products..

Very intersting reading and a library must have!

This is the book that started it all for me. Roberta Wilson puts aromatherapy into laymans terms. This book is facinating and revealing. She gives you the folklore & herbal heritage, medicinal uses, beauty benefits, emotional effects and primary actions as well as many formulas for common ailments. This book is my primary reference guide to date.

Charming book

Review Date: 2007-01-10
This is a charming book on aromatherapy, written in a conversational style. You can imagine sitting with a friend in a tea-shop where she is telling you how this or that essential oil helped so and so with such and such a problem. This makes book very easy to read and the stories make it easy to remember what essential oil may be helpful for treating particular issue. While the focus of the book is on essential oils which are helpful for issues related to women such as pms, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, it covers many issue related to both sexes, such as weight loss, skin care, hair care, sexually transmitted diseases and general ailments like headache, stomachache, infections, etc.

At the end of the book there are about 16 pages with recipes related to issues mentioned previously in the book. This is a rather small book, perhaps more geared toward newcomers to aromatherapy, though the anecdotal stories make it for an informative and fun reading for anyone.

I just love this book

I picked this book up after leafing through it at a salon that I go to. I literally refer to it at least once a week. I have found the instructions to be very easy and the remedies to be quite effective. It's really one of my favorite books.

Great for beginners, Helped me alot at first.

This book is great! Not only does she provide and excellent source of information for beginners, but she also conveys her passion for aromatherapy through her writings, and her total faith in the use of essential oils for healing the body, and the soul. Deals alot with issues for women and children. She also provides a long list of companies that sell quality oils, and even schools in the U.S. and U.K. where you can receive education in the field. Overall her passion for the oils and knowledge of their uses can give alot of confidence to the beginner. I do have one caution though, because she lives in the U.K., some of the words she uses for different maladies are different from the ones used in the U.S. So if you don't know what it is she's talking about, make sure you ask or look it up.

An aromtherapy must have!

This book should be a staple to any aromatherapy library. I always refer to this book first whenever there is problem. I also give this book to my sisters and friends when they get pregnant. It is a great starter reference that helps from early pregnancy through high school and beyond. I started using this book when I was single, and I have actually used some of the various blends on my pets. Basically, if you are a woman, know a woman, know children, know animals, or are even a cloistered monk, this book is a great start.

A wonderful guide... but not always to aromatherapy

This was one of my very first aromatherapy books, because it is relatively inexpensive, and likewise relatively small and non-threatening. It has more the feel of a friendly guide than some obscure textbook. I still use it on a very regular basis, even though I've also added a number of more advanced books to my repertoire.

It is, on the whole, indeed very useful for women (and can be for men as well, of course!) It covers a wide range of women's-interest subjects, from home and body care, to pregnancy and infants ailments. The information for men is not as prevalent (as indicated in the title, of course) but many things that apply to women apply to men as well.

Most of the information is very thorough, but it can sometimes be hard to get to the 'meat' of what you are looking for. It is written in a very 'friendly', anecdotal style, which although easier reading than more 'technical' books, can make it difficult to find the key things you are looking for. The recommended essential oils are always in bold text, however, so that does at least partially negate this problem.

Another issue I had with it was the fact that some of the subjects she speaks about, there is NO essential oil information at all. This would not trouble me nearly as much, except for the fact that part of the title of the book is 'Guide to Essential Oils'. It is still good information, but if there is no essential oil information, I don't feel it belongs in an essential oil guide.

Despite these problems, however, I would definitely recommend it for any aromatherapy/essential oil library.

As a store owner I offer products for easing everyday life. I am always reading to further my knowledge on how to serve my customers better. The Fragrant Mind offers all kinds of information on how to mix certain scents and how our mood can change for the better by inhaling certain scents. This book is full of excellent information on aromatherapy and how our brains respond to it. This book is a MUST for the well seasoned or the newbies.

I have bought a few other books on Aromatherapy, over the years, which have given me an introduction into Aromatherapy. None of them compare to the books by Valerie Ann Worwood! I just bought her books "The Fragrant Mind" and "The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy", and they are wonderfully informative as well as a pleasure to read. I highly recommend both of these books for anyone who is interested in learning all that they can about Aromatherapy.

Focusing on "The Fragrant Mind", it is an amazing book! There is so much wonderful information, great recipes for various blends, a fun and enlightening look at the the different invdividual personality types and the different essential oils personality profiles, not to mention wonderful Quick Reference Charts.

This book does so much more than tell about a couple of uses for a few basic essential oils, it shows how essential oils can truly effect our emotional state. It also helps explain why we are drawn more to certain scents, and how our personality plays a big role in this. This book is definitely a must have!

I have not had the good fortune to see a copy of Worwood's other books The Complete Guide to Essential Oils, which I understand is a bible of sorts, and Aromantics, whose title intrigues me very much. The Fragrant Mind is daring in the sense that it espouses a very unique theory, that of classifying personalities based on the scents they prefer. I may not necessarily totally agree with Worwood, and I have had difficulty figuring out what personality type I have based on her system, but this book is definitely interesting reading, especially if you're an aromatherapy fan like I am. Buy it if only to round out your aromatherapy library. You will find yourself picking it up from time and time to read up on her one-of-a-kind personality descriptions.

I like this book. I like that there are recipes for mixing essential oils for an effect. But I'd like to know more about how particular oils affect physical ailments and less about the author's categories of personalities.

The writing is clear and interesting to read, worded very new agey with exotic names for the recipes like Return To the Source Bath, and A Sprinkling of Fantasy hair rinse. Highly recommended aromatherapy book and those interested in perfume and sensuality.

This excellent work on the Bach flower remedies is one of the best books on the subject that I have encountered. The author provides the history of Dr. Bach and the remedies, deals with the remedies as a holistic healing modality and offers a possible interpretation as to how and why they work.

There is a chapter devoted to finding the right remedy for specific diseases - lists of symptoms are included to facilitate diagnosis. The practical application of the remedies is thoroughly explained and there is an interesting discussion of the 38 flowers from which they are made and their qualities.

A helpful Question and Answer section addresses frequently asked questions. The book concludes with a bibliography, list of useful addresses and an index. In additional to this informative book and for a wider look at holistic medicine, I highly recommend Gerber's masterpiece Vibrational Medicine.

Great book. You need to own this book. Gardner has really done her homework. I was amazed how much info is in this book. I actually started in the middle of the book, read a few chapters and now I have started from the front. I have learned a lot of new things, and things I didn't even think about. The only thing I disagree on is where Gardner wrote about Sundances. Perhaps the dances she has been to do no pierce but I have seen piercing and know many who do pierce. Other than that the book in a AA+ in my book. You will not be disappointed in the book.

It is sort of a clearing house for a number of healing modalities so it's useful as an overview. It doesn't offer in-depth information on any of the subjects covered, but has many references for further reading and research.
I would catagorize this book as a starting point if one is wanting to learn about healing with light and color, sound, crystals or aromatherapy.

Rather than being just another aromatherapy cookbook, Clinical Aromatherapy in Nursing is a comprehensive guide on the use of this complementary modality in the clinical arena. It provides a strong clinical focus from the nursing perspective, including the incorporation of Aromatherapy into the Nursing Diagnosis and Care Plan as well as regulations and health and safety policies.

The author presents a refreshing and very compassionate approach to nursing care, one that I feel could fundamentally change the paradigm of the way we deliver care to our patients. For nurses who are experiencing care-giver burnout, this book is an inspiration to what our profession is really about.

While this book will not qualify a nurse to practice clinical aromatherapy without formal training, it will be an instrumental framework for incorporating this modality into the nursing model.

Having completed Janes 5 module training program after reading this book, I can highly recommend both the book and the course to all health care professionals.

Her knowledge and experience is tremendous and a true gift to the nursing profession. Jane is able to articulate her clinical expertise, and the importance the "m" technique has in the application of the Essential Oil blends. Her approach is caring and truly speaks to the Art of Nursing. I highly recommend this book and Jane's course, which are both specific to the Clinical Application of Aromatherapy. She has brought new light, new touch and caring into my practice. Linda Rimmer MS, RN, CRNI, OCN

My avocation is making herbal medicines and cosmetics. This is one of the few reference books I cannot live without - ragged from constant consultation. The descriptions of the essential oils are thorough and quite useful, without being overly technical. The chart in the back of ailments and the oils that can be used to treat them is particularly helpful. The psychological profiles of the oils are also interesting, but not overstated. This book would be suitable for people new to essential oils and their properties as well as an appropriate tool for those who are more knowledgeable.

This book is an excellent introduction to flower essences, or flower remedies. It's strongest point is the visual way it is laid out, with a case study, photos of the flower, historical snippets, and general information on each remedy. It's very well-organized and a real pleasure to read, especially if you want to shy away from dense, overly-technical reading on the subject. This is immensely readable, yet still accurate and true to the subject. The one confusing point is the selection of remedies seems random or arbitrary. There are remedies from many different sources, or makers of remedies, with out a complete selection from any company. This is interesting, but in no way complete. Some remedies are included, others excluded, for no apparent reason. Still, I enjoy this book and it's nice just to leave out for browsing in the waiting room of an office, or coffee table in your living room.
