I really liked this book. It is a basic Indian massage. The reason i only gave it 4 stars was because, I think it skips some other basics that i know because i am in school for massage therapy. This book was recomended by my basic massage book as info into Ayurvedic Massage modality. I like some of the techniques and add them into my swedish massage, but i don't plan on taking any classes on Ayurvedic. If you have no expirence on massage then buy a basic massage book first. This book goes into the spirtual, as well as shows you a full body massage. I also found how important the oil you used and what you should store it in interesting.

If you seek balance, read all the books of H. Johari!

I met Harish when I was three and he visited with myself and my family through out my life. I am twenty seven now, and am just begining to comprehend the essence of the messages of the Arevedic that he translates with diamond like clarity. Spirituality is expressed with pragmatic excersizes that can lead to a well balanced spiritual and physical state of health and satisfaction. Each book increases your hunger for knowledge of the mind, body and soul as discussed through the arevedic traditions. The books are genuine filled with beauty and real teachings by artist, musician, healer and holy man, Harish Johari. To further your well being read them all!

very good basics book with lots of color pictures

This book could be sub-titled "A great way to your partners happiness - help save your marriage" The pages are unusually thick paper for a inexpensive book today. There are many many color pictures all through the book. Just enough aromatherapy to get you started and more than enough massage concepts to keep you busy. My wife said after her first session "Did you learn all that from reading the book ? "

I love this book!

This book is a wealth of information for both aromatherapy and massage. I ordered it for the aromatherapy part, but I found the massage portion of the book to be equally beneficial. I have many massage books in my library, but I return to this one time after time. I esspecially like the aromatherapy encyclopedia, which covers most every essential oil and its most beneficial use.

Fully illustrated, well described, covers issues for beg-adv

I never leave town without this book. Anytime I have an ailiement I pull out this book first. I have learned so much about the body and the immune system just from this book. I have plastic tabs on all the chapters for easy refrence. I also use this book in conjunction with, "20,000 Secrets of Tea, The Most Effective Way To Benefit From Nature's Healing Herbs" by Victoria Zak. I liked each of these books so much I bought a copy of each for my Herbalist!

Great physiological explanation of essential oil use

The physiological explanations for the various parts of the body was very educational. The oil descriptions were thorough and useful in their descriptions of the methods used for for the various effects wanted. I would have loved to see a more complete listing of oils. This is the books' only weakness. I enjoy it and use it often for reference.

This comprehensive view covers the art and science involved.

The best book on the market for someone who truly wants to learn and practice aromatherapy.

Good recipes but lacks essential information
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-10
Overall, I consider this a good book with easy to follow recipes. However, I feel that she didn't include all the information that she should have.

She uses essential oils in many of the recipes, but she never mentions any safety data. For instance, she includes many citrus oils without mentioning that they are phototoxic.

She gives a brief description of each of the ingredients that she uses throughout the book. However, although she uses a number of different emulsifiers, she doesn't bother to explain why one may be better than another in a specific recipe, or how to substitute one emulsifier for another in a recipe. Since some of the ingredients are hard to find, this would be nice to know. In addition, one emulsifier she uses is an alpha hydroxy acid which she includes in most of her lotion and cream recipes. I choose not to use alpha hydroxy acids and would love to know how to make the recipes without that ingredient.

There are not as many recipes in this book as it first appears. Many recipes are, "take the basic recipe from chapter 3 and add the following essential oils..."

While I'm glad I bought this book, I do feel that it's going to take some additional research and experimentation before I'm able to use the recipes for my own personal use.

Best of its type.

A gorgeous book written by a dedicated professional. Although some of the luxury-class packaging shown is unaffordable for most people, the products themselves are impeccable. They're neither inexpensive nor quickie/craft-style projects. If you want to make high-end natural skincare items, this book is essential.

I was lucky enough to obtain a copy of this beautiful book. Having always been interested in aromatherapy, I was pleased to see so many wonderful recipes for using the oils that I have come to love. The layout of the book is beautiful with great photos and easy to follow directions and recipes. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in making natural cosmetics and just generally wanting to make their environments more healthful.

Definitely a good book to start with...

I enjoy this book and think it is worth having in your library if you are interested in truly natural perfumery.

My one critcism is that many of the recipes include sandalwood (Santalum album), an oil that I have moral issues with using. It is a threatened species and I don't necessarily think it is responsible to encourage those beginning in their exploration to purchase and use it heavily. It's incredibly unfortunate because sandalwood is one of my favorite scents in the whole world, but I can't justify destroying a species to make perfume. Apparently the cultivated Austalian species, Santalum spicatum, is considered a good alternative. I wish she had at least mentioned the controversy in her book.

I suggest anyone interested in this book research the status of Santalum album, as well as alternatives for its use in perfumery prior to purchasing oils for the recipes. Hopefully the aromatherapy and natural perfumery community will begin to raise its consciousness regarding the overharvesting of plants for aesthetic and medicinal uses.

All in all, I recommend this book with the exception explained above. I took a half day class with Mindy Green last year and thought she was a wonderful teacher. She has a lot to offer.

You'll never go back to store-bought perfumes!

As an aromatherapy educator and soapmaker, I love natural health and beauty products. Since I began using essential oils to create my own scent blends several years ago, I've never looked back, and I've never missed those overpriced, synthetic, store-bought perfumes that always ended up giving me a headache.

This enjoyable little book is a great place to begin to learn how to blend your own original perfume. In less than 100 pages, the author introduces 40 essential oils, 30 natural fragrance recipes, and two easy and instructive blending lessons. The book also features several handy charts; I find myself referring to the table on note type and odor intensity very often when choosing which oils will combine nicely together.

The book is put together in a very straightforward, user-friendly way. Rather than delving deeply into the science of aromatherapy (for that information, I highly recommend The Aromatherapy Companion, by Victoria Edwards, or any book by Valerie Ann Worwood), the author simply focuses on using all-natural, plant-derived essential oils to create scent blends. You can use these blends to make fragrant bath oils, body splashes, room freshening spritzes, linen and lingerie sprays, or, best of all, your own signature perfume.

Her recipes are great places to start - my favorites are Angel's Whisper and Chocolate Eclipse - but soon you'll become addicted to developing your own original blends.

P.S. The poetic quotations on perfume and scent that are scattered throughout the text are almost worth the price of the book itself!

Good "starter" book for perfumers

I decided to purchase this one after reviewing a copy from the library. It is not a complete reference by any means, but if you're interested in blending your own fragrances and want to stick to exclusively non-synthetic ingredients, it is an excellent reference.

I would not recommend it if you're interested in exploring the "medicinal" aspects of aromatherapy (which are dubious, in my opinion, but I am certainly no expert). It focuses on 40 specific essential oils and does not give enough information on the aromatherapeutic qualities of each.

But if you're strictly interested in creating custom fragrances for yourself, this is a good starter. Perhaps not as "pretty" as Mandy Aftel's "Essence and Alchemy," but far more informative.

This is a good portable book on basic massage techniques, along with a very detailed and informative section on massage oils. It includes a chart of oils and their effects, as well as warnings about certain oils and their interaction with the environment.

The small size makes it easy to take anywhere, and the massage techniques are nicely organized by body part and by specific massage types, such as for relieving headaches, stomachaches, and eyestrain. I highly recommend it for anyone that wants a portable massage guide to keep close by.

The author did a wonderful job of covering the use of essential oil (perfumes) and botanicals in ancient Egypt (and at times other areas) from a archaeological standpoint. Many of the well known ancient perfume recipes are included and it is interesting to see how Pliny and others suggested medicinal use. I will say however people wishing Aromatherapy content, as the title denotes, will be very disappointed as there really is none. Lack of training in herbology, Aromatherapy or even botany also serves to limit the authors grasp and ability to expound. Altogether I feel the book is a great reference work and well researched.

A delightful Ancient Egyptian aromatherapy primer

This exceeded my expectations. Incredibly beautiful photographs thanks to Werner Forman. Ancient recipes from the Pharoahs and goddesses temples, myths, legends and Egyptian herbalism. Lise Manniche digs deep to find the original use for many essential oils that are in use today. She sticks with reputable research rather than presenting erroneous information yet the tone is lively and engaging. This book serves as an inspiration and will undoubtably make the reader want to know more about this fascinating era.

A perfumer's delight!

Anything by Manniche about ancient Egyptian herbs, plants or perfumes is a treat! If you have an interest in the perfumes used in the ancient world - what was used, where they came from, the hows and whys - you must get this book. Includes reconstructed recipes for the most famous perfumes in the ancient world - a real eye-opener. Accompanied by gorgeous illustrations. Well worth the price.

This is a fabulous book! I learned so much about the psychological uses of scents that I had no idea about before. The "Letter Scents" are quite clever, and the recipes are yummy. Marcel Lavabre uses lay-person's language to explain and educate the reader about the basic and the chemical world of essental oils. I have a heightened appreciation for these chemicals as well as a greater understanding of how they work, and how to make use of them in my business. I do find it a little difficult to locate the specific application of an oil in the many tables that are offered, but the information seems to be fairly comprehensive.
