A Delightful DiscoveryReview Date: 2006-02-14
I became convinced the author was "on to something" with essences when I discovered their helpfulness for animals (she has another book on using essences with pets that I read before this general handbook). Two of the essences made a huge difference in getting my furry little car-hating critter calmed down so he could go several thousand miles with none of his usual yowling.
The book has become one of my favorite gift items, especially for folks who like to look at the larger picture of our life's search for fulfillment and transcendence, to which the author links what she says about flower essences.

The Guide itself is a pretty exhaustive list of oils, and includes the chemical components of each oil as well as descriptions of the oil's appearance and smell. Ms. Rose does not waste our money with full-page color plates of plants most of us are unlikely to ever see!
I also highly recommend Kurt Shnaubelt's "Advanced Aromatherapy" as a companion volume to this book. Dr. Schnaubelt explains more of the chemistry behind the oils and includes some safety information that is sadly lacking from Ms. Rose's book. Like one of the reviewers of one of her other books, I downgraded a star because of safety information that I felt was either incomplete or conflicted with other professional sources I have researched.
I also recommend Prima Fleur Oils, mentioned in her "sources" section, as an ethical and fairly-priced Essential Oil supplier. These days, everyone is selling essential oils and it's hard to know what kind of product you're getting. These guys are the real deal.
Excellent resource from an expert.....Review Date: 2005-05-22
Rose includes photographs of a hydrosol still or `old spirit well' used to distill essential oil and hydrosols. In olden times these powerful substances were known as `sprits' owing to their magical properties and ability to heal and provide comfort as well as kill. Sol was also the name the alchemists gave gold. Was it gold the alchmists sought? After all, fluids that could cure as well as maim or kill must have been worth their weight in gold.
Rose says hydrolsols are being produced in the California wine country by wineries involved in The Aromatic Plant Project which sets an example for sustainable agriculture and respect for the environment. One of the things I best like about this book is that Rose discusses the habitat and environmental impact of each plant used to produce a specific oil/hydrosol. For example, if you use Rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora) as a single or a blend, you are contributing to the destruction of the Brazilian rainforest, because wild trees in the forest must be destroyed to produce the Rosewood hydrosol/oil. On the other hand, you can go on using Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) without a care because the economies of Somaliland and Southeast Arabia produce this 5,000 year-old substance (used by the Egyptians to mummify bodies) in an environmentally friendly and agriculturally sustainable manner. For each oil/hydrosol verbotan for "green" reasons, Rose suggest an alternative substance.
In her appendix, Rose provides a list of sources (2000), including the Aromatherapy Plant Project in California (a non-profit resource that promotes American agriculture).

Comprehensive and practical information on aromatherapy!Review Date: 2002-12-02
1. A section on how aromatherapy can be practiced at home (lotions/treatment oils/steams/perfume blending/proportions -- and more!)
2. A detailed section on massages and carrier oils
3. Info on medicinal/clinical aromatherapy
4. A very comprehensive section on common conditions that can be treated by aromatherapy
5. A detailed section on the essential oils themselves (e.g. functions/characteristics/safety data/smell).
6. Brief appendix about vitamins and essential oil chemistry
I've seen her other bestselling book (The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Essential Oils) -- and although that book is also an excellent info source (165 oil profiles+brief theraputic index), it is "too" broad for me. The bulk of that book is oil profiles, and it contains profiles on many oils I won't use and won't be able to find in stores (although, of course, it also contains profiles on every common oil you can imagine). I would consider buying it if I need a comprehensive essential oil guide in the future.
I prefer this book (The Complete Illustrate Guide to Aromatherapy) because it covers a broader area and is practical; it's well written, pleasant on the eyes (great-to-read layout) and interesting, with useful info on many areas (e.g. recipes as well as oil info). Although this book does not contain as many oil profiles, the content of the profiles are 90% the same as her other book, which does the job for me. The photos and illustrations are beautiful, too! : ) Superb reference for beginners or pros.

Very explicative and very helpful for those who need or want to know what the actual oil derives from. TO me, this is a must for any aromatherapist's library.

An essential working bookReview Date: 2001-12-10
It is easy to follow and you can find a remedy or synergy for just about any complaint. It lists the most useful oils and gives alternatives where possible. The recipes are also great with plenty of alternatives (its not practical to have every oil on hand.)
The section on holiday and first aid is great - this book and my oils go everywhere with me.

I agree that it is nice to have the number of drops as opposed to percentages, but that's just not enough for me. If you just want a ton of recipes and you've got many different essential oils, this may be the book for you. Otherwise, you'll probably want to look somewhere else.

Channeling is not research.Review Date: 2001-07-13
However, if we examine more closely the source of the information, we find that it is derived from sessions with a psychic trance medium who is channeling the words of discarnate entities. The book is then padded with lots of footnotes and references to information from books. So, let's give the author credit for the ability to collect and organize information from many sources in this world and the next.
But is this true research? Where are the case studies, the clinical trials and practitioner reports which could corroborate this information? Where is the field work with the plants to confirm the qualities and healing powers that are attributed to them?
With its charts and systematic organization the book seems to be the result of meticulous research. In fact, it is a collection of highly speculative, unverified claims, and thus it is dangerously irresponsible.
This reviewer does not discount the possibility that talented individuals can access information from other dimensions of reality. But such activity is not passive. It is our responsibility to substantiate the accuracy and truth of information we gather from other sources, be they discarnate or of this world.
Gurudas has not done this, .. however attractive it appears.
It is unfortunate that this book has become a model for countless others to wander off into delusional flights of unexamined psychic fancy in the creation of vibrational essences of all kinds.
Gurudas cites the spiritual philospher and initiate Rudolf Steiner in many references, footnotes throughout the book. But we search in vain for the sobriety of real spiritual research of the kind championed by Steiner and those inspired by his example.

Get Your Life In BalanceReview Date: 2005-10-30
I am currently in a 200 hour yoga teacher training course, and this book is required reading for me.
Tiwari goes very much into the philosophy behind Ayurveda and the doshas, yet explains it in a way that the average reader can understand. She gives the best explanations of each dosha that I've ever read, going into aspects such as career and sexuality, diet, exercise, physical and emotional traits.
She then gives food charts for the 10 doshas, instead of the usual three doshas that most do. She lists foods that are beneficial, and those that are not.
I find this book to be wonderful, and very accessible to the casual reader as well as the experienced person very into Ayurveda.

I really enjoyed Murder@Work.
The fast-paced early chapters quickly built up momentum and engaged my curiosity.
The realistic characters and settings filled out a picture where there were many motives and possiblities.
I looked forward each day to discovering more pieces for the puzzle. The clock was ticking!
A well-structured, engaging murder-mystery!

Murder@Work with its South African background, is a well written and enjoyable book, with its difficult to solve, spur-of-the-moment murder, inspired by email joking. Highly recommended.

She has "identified 25 distinct body types," and their "quadrants," but I could not relate to any of them and I know my body pretty well and have lived long enough to see the effects of my actions on it. Put another way, I could relate to too many of them, which was not useful. Many of them sounded too similar. I also wondered why "abandonment" was listed as afflicting so many organs or body types, nine in all.
This may not be a book for the average person. Sometimes the explanations are lacking and you don't quite understand what she is saying, but wish she had written more. She offers many, many suggestions for which essential oils will help what condition. However, she refers to them in code. I've never heard of the essential oil called, "Magnify Your Purpose," or "Live With Passion." This puzzled me. And then, aha! on one of the very last pages, she deciphers these oils for the reader. Otherwise, one would have to buy them only from Young Living who uses these trade names. Be forewarned, many of these recipes are huge.
"Harmony" alone contains 17 types of oils.
If you buy this intriguing book you will not read it casually. It has too much information in it. Make up your mind that you will have to delve deeply into this subject, but rest assured the information presented will be for the most part, fully and satisfyingly helpful. For those who want to make a career out of this healing modality, this is the book for you.

I just don't care for the scare & fright tactics used, especially to perspective people that don't know enough about aromatherapy safety...I myself am confused about the extreme statements.
Some of the comments are correct but others I take issue with, for instance it is true that essential oils applied *neat* can be dangerous and they should be used with correct knowledge & care but other oils can *BE* used neat such as Lavender for one, I myself use it all the time for headaches rubbed into my temples for years. My DNA is just find after its use.I would suggest to anyone use discernment & not let fear lead you astray & do your own research about aromatherapy.I can't help but think this is a issue with YLS oils,I am not affiliated at all with them, but have used their oils and found them to be very good, but I co-create my own blends.I will buy the book. I found this book very valuable and helpful both on procedure and specific emotional healings as well as on progressions of healing other emotions related to emotional core issues and suggestions for writing and other clearing methods.
The author is very clear about her high regard for both Gary Young and the oils his Young Living company produces and sells.
