Guide to natural healing modalities
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-08
This is a helpful guide to natural healing modalities. With its lavish illustrations and concise information, it is a pleasure to read and valuable to keep as a reference guide.

The introductory chapter: Natural Remedies, is a detailed investigation of Aromatherapy, Herbalism, Homeopathy and Naturopathy. The chapters that follow discuss the application of these healing modalities for the various systems of the body.

The chapter on the nervous system includes, for example, aromatherapy, herbal, homeopathic and naturopathic remedies for anxiety, depression, headaches and insomnia, amongst others. Others systems dealt with include the respiratory, circulatory, reproductive, urinary, musco-skeletal systems and the skin.

There are also chapters that deal with first aid, children's ailments, stress management, hypnotherapy, affirmations, visualization, massage, reflexology, chiropractic, eastern healing modalities and there is a separate chapter for yoga.

The book includes about 550 full colour photographs and concludes with a glossary, bibliography and index. The value of the book lies in the fact that it provides the different approaches from four main alternative healing modalities.

Excellent book for self-help alternative healthcare.
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-24
Another excellent book by Susan Curtis covering the use of Aromatherapy, the Bach Flower Essences, Herbs, and Homoeopathy. The Introductory chapter includes: a short lesson in herbology with gathering herbs, making infusions, decoctions, tinctures, compresses and poultices; a brief discussion of Classical Homoeopathy; the use of essential oils through massage, inhalations, compresses, baths, with some background in Aromatherapy; and information on how to use the flower essences and Resque Remedy. The major portion of this book is a Repertory of A-Z ailments (from abrasions to wrinkles) and references in each catagory for Aromatherapy, Bach Flowers, Herbal, and Homoeopathic remedies (first aid potencies only). A list of suppliers is included; as well as, contacts in the U.K. and U.S.A. for further information. Her Bibliography references some very qualified aromatherapists, herbalists, homoeopaths and Bach Flower authors. I had Neal's Yard Natural Remedies 24 hours when a relative called asking about chickenpox; I grabbed this book and was able to read to them 4 different methods of alternative care. I have always liked Susan Curtis' books, this is no exception. A great book for the beginner and those advanced in their knowledge of healthcare issues.

I bought one copy for myself, then another for a friend.
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-16
This is one of the most informative paperbacks on the subject of practical aromatherapy. Useful for beginners as well as those who have more experience. Covers most major essential oils by discussing descriptive qualities and properties, recipe blends, info on carrier oils, as well as historical information on individual oils and aromatherapy itself. A large selection of recipes categorized by ailment/desire is very helpful (and refered to often). A decent index is also included. For those looking for magickal information, this is not the book for you. There are no corresponding tables (such as the ruling planet, candle colour-spectrum, male/female characteristics, etc.) and no recipes for making your own incense or personal body oils. There is, however, enough descriptive information contained within the individual entries for the experienced magickal worker to develop personalized recipes. For the holidays, I am giving a friend of mine a few starter bottles and this book so that she may begin to enjoy the art of "Practical Aromatherapy".

Being somewhat new to the art of scent blending, I found this to be particularly useful. There are some really lovely scent blends included with an in-depth aromatherapy guide to each of the 18 essential oils used for the various recipes. Being not so new to handmade skin care I still found this book useful since the author presents typical things like bath salts in not-so-typical ways. The photography is gorgeous and inspiring. When I have absolutley no buyers remorse I give a book 5 stars - this gets 5!
