For anyone looking to treat infertility disorders, I would highly recommend this book. The quality and sheer volume of information presented is quite impressive, and the same goes for her seminars. I would not suggest this book for anyone other than a TCM practitioner, as it is a professional text. The content is both highly specialized and should not be used by those without extensive training; besides, there are plenty of other introductory books that will give patients a more comprehensive view of TCM theory in an easily digestible format.

That said, this book is one of my favorites in the subject, and fully worth several times the purchase price!

I was referred to this book by a fellow friend who like me, is trying to conceive a baby over 40. This book talks with detail about how chinese medicine works and in particularly to help "strengthen" our reproduction systems. The information is very clear and detailed and can help anyone starting to explore the benefits of TCM. It enlightens the reader because it never dismisses the Western medical community, but talks about how the Eastern methods of TCM can enhance our already traditionally accepted practice of conventional medicine. It also talks about how TCM works well alone. However, it takes diligence and specialized practitioners to fully incorporate all of this info to practice. Finding a excellent Acupuncturist or Chinese doctor seems integral and the information is amass. I felt I learned quite a bit about Chinese medicine in just one night of reading, and I was already educated in many areas.

What a fun resource on alternative treatments! I never knew the "downside" of herbs or other alternative treatments. The author gives both the positive and negative--help or hype--about the most commonly touted holistic treatments. I always thought herbs were ALL safe--because they are natural. Not so--and the author has scientific studies to back it up. Good for her! Also like the helpful sidebars on all pages--little known tips about complementary methods of staying well. Super!

If you are thinking of using Alternative Medicine--herbs, Ayurvedic, Chiropractic, Chinese Medicine or mind/body therapies--you must know what they can REALLY DO--and the limitations of each. This book gives the TRUTH and HYPE. Totally changed the way I think about taking herbs--yes, some herbs can kill you; some herbs may enhance optimal health. KNOW the difference. This book will show you how to be discerning about what you put into your body. Superbly written--easy to understand--factual & helpful resource every family should have on their shelf.

Excellent book by Debra Fulghum Bruce! Written in her fresh, easy-to-read style, Bruce's book gives the TRUTH--and dispels the hype--about tons of alternative treatments. READ THIS BOOK before you take herbs, use alternative medicine practitioners, or toss your Rx away! It may SAVE YOUR LIFE! Bruce contends that some alternative treatments are excellent for reducing stress--which could stop illness. But as she says, when you have "the big stuff"--see your medical doctor. Herbs probably can't stop a cancer from growing! Trust in medicine--supplement with holistic treatments to reduce stress--make healthy lifestyle changes with diet & exercise. Brilliant book! Buy it.

After reading a number of alternative medicine books with so-called "star" or "name" authors in the last year, it was a pleasure to read a book that gives honest appraisals of differing methods of curing diseases and conditions. For once, there's no author trying to "sell" his theory, along with his vitamins, classes, whatever. Now I feel I know what to ask for when I visit the vitamin store, and I have some good questions to ask on doctor visits.

Authentic and Poetic - A Remarkable Story

I no longer remember where I stumbled across Vessel of Sadness. I recall that I was totally unfamiliar with this book and its author. I was puzzled by the title. But my attention was captured by the literary reviews on the back cover.

"How have you said so much and involved me so deeply with so few words?" Gunnar Myrdahl, Nobel laureate.

"One of the most sensitive and moving books of the war, both authentic and poetic" A.L. Rowse, Elizabethan historian and Shakespearean scholar.

This is a fictional account of the protracted and bloody Allied invasion of Anzio in 1944. The story is told through shifting points of view - an Italian child, a British general, a camp commandant, and Allied and German soldiers. This mosaic is slow to unfold, but a tragic, unrelenting story emerges. Overall the book is subdued and somewhat detached. But its impact is staggering.

This short book is quite remarkable. It has a haunting aspect to it, but it is not a blatant antiwar account. As others have noted, possibly the best comparisons are with The Red Badge of Courage and All Quiet on the Western Front. In a poetic style William Woodruff conveys a frightening sense of realism. High level strategic decisions move down through the chain of command and are translated into battle. Confusion, fear, and pain are pervasive. The focus is on survival.

The author participated in the initial invasion landing at Anzio on January 23, 1944 with the First British Infantry and fought for the next four months on the beachhead, trapped by German forces on the high ground. Woodruff tells the story of war with an emotional impact that ensures that this literary work will become a classic. I highly recommend Vessel of Sadness.

This is a moving and vivid description of the Allies attempt to take Rome during World War II. The novel is brief and concise but reaches a level of greatness comparable to the best World War II literature. Woodruff has make an understanding effor to convey to all readers the stupidity of war and the suffering of those who were persuaded to fight for the betterness of humankind but were uncertain of their personal destinies. As a reader I was very impressed with the quality of the narrative, the interesting dialogues, the sense of inmediacy that the novel brings and the matter of fact approach to war. Woodruff has brought us a magnificient work that will leave an ever-lasting impression on those who read it.

Dr. Murray was an ANGEL sent to our family when our precious 8 year old kitty, IPO, became critically ill in 1998. What our local vet diagnosed as liver failure was reassessed by Dr. Murray as being diabetes induced, as the result of a rare brain tumor. She brought him "back to us". Day and night, she watched over him, nursed him back to health, educated us on proper home care/treatment....and comforted us by phone AT ALL HOURS. Her love, devotion and expertise gave us two more years with IPO in which he was able to still live/love comfortably. Dr. Murray was gentle but honest when the time finally came that we had to say goodbye to our beloved kitty. She comforted us as we grieved and still took my heartbroken phone calls long after he was gone. Her compassion to IPO, our family and to ALL her patients makes her an Angel to all who have been blessed with her touch.....and NOW, she can touch so many more lives by sharing her expertise, wisdom and compassion through her book!!!
The book is practical, well-written and packed with very useful information you can't afford NOT to have if you love your pet! I have already ordered several copies of this book and will order more this week to give as presents to all my friends who love animals! I highly recommend the book......and hold deepest respect, gratitude and affection to the author!

I will be ordering several copies of this book. I have had the immense pleasure of meeting and getting to know Dr. Murray under very unpleasant circumstances. She helped save my cats life many years ago as the hands of a vet who botched surgery on him. She is a consummate professional with a mountain of knowledge and expertise. Truly an expert in her field, she gives practical advice backed by years of experience. In addition she treats animals with the love and respect they deserve. I just can't say enough to praise Dr. Murray. I will forever be thankful to her for what she did for my cat and me and I am so very happy to see her sharing what she knows with everyone. I would advise everyone to get this book. You won't be disappointed and in fact you may spare your pet a lot of pain and heartache by learning what Dr. Murray has to say. Get your copy soon. And if you read this Dr. Murray, thank you again from the bottom of my heart.

This book is more than I expected and it simply fantastic! What I was hoping for and expecting was a book that would outline the vibrational healing qualities of various plants and herbs and so forth. However it also contains beautifully drawn diagrams that illustrate meridian points and chakras, and she goes into energy healing theory and applicable healing practices such as reflexology and essential oil baths and so forth. This book is a treasure! I love it!

For years I have been hearing about aromatherapy but very little how-to or what works and why. I am delighted to finally find a book that includes answers to questions I had in a format that is easy to access. I have begun using some of the techniques Ms. Eidson relates in her book and have seen some amazing transformations in my life and in my family's. These changes range from direct health benefits to healing parts of my past I thought were forever to haunt me. My gratitude to Ms Eidson for getting into print such valuable information.

Aromatherapy, as an alternative healing method, has always been of interest to me. In the past, most of the books I have read on the subject have been too technical, boring or the author did not write about this subject in a way that was easily understood by his readers. That all changed once I picked up Deborah Eidson's new book titled Vibrational Healing: Revealing The Essence Of Nature Through Aromatherapy's Use Of Essential Oils. Her book arrived in the mail a few days ago and I didn't have a chance to read it until today. This morning, after I woke up, I noticed I was feeling mentally congested and my breathing was labored for no apparent reason. I decided to see what essential oils I had available in my collection that would relieve my congestion. I was intuitively drawn to my peppermint oil although I did not know why. After I had the opportunity to use the oil for a few minutes, I decided to read Ms. Eidson's book and find out what she had to say about it. Everything she wrote about peppermint oil rang true for me. It validated what I was experiencing and explained why the oil gave me instantaneously relief. Ms. Eidson's writing style is concise and compelling. Her book is very well organized and passionately written. Deborah's background and knowledge in the field of aromatherapy, in my opinion, is second to none. The wisdom she shares in her book about "essentials oils" is a must read for anyone who is into alternative methods of healing. The information she shares with her readers is safe, sound and practical. In her book, Ms. Eidson explains the use of each "essential oil" in great detail. She also provides a glossary, for some of the words she uses in her book, so her readers will clearly understand the message she is conveying to them. Most importantly, what she shares with her readers about essential oils and spiritual principles, works! I can not recommend her book highly enough.

A reference for use of aromatherapy.

This book has been an incredible tool for me to use as a reference. I have intuitively picked an essence or a combination of essences in the past, however, now I have a great set of information that provides a description of the oils and directions for releasing blocked energies. This validates my intuition and provides clarification on the mental level of these choices. I have also discerned that this book has many layers of information which provides guidance for the professional healer as well as the beginner.

An essential book.

I got the book after hearing about it at the Coast to Coast Show. This is a book that shouldn't be missed if one is seriously concerned with his own health. Living with agreement with Nature's laws, and homeopathy are true solutions for our health. I have attended several acupuncture sessions and I am the living proof of its effectiveness. Human body is designed in accordance with the laws of physics and chemistry. These laws never change. They are recorded in every nerve and every muscle. The best benefits a book can bring is not only revealing the truth but also inspiring insight, and "Vertual Medicine" does a good job in that respect. Another book that I recommend is The Master Cleanser and Natural Cures "They" Don't Want You To Know About

This book does an excellent job of examining the history of ideas and technologies associated with the field of energetic medicine. How energy and information "create" our reality are key issues in this field, as well as how the energy and intentions of the healer are involved in the healing process. This author examines a variety of issues, from how information is communicated with homeopathic and chinese medicine therapies to how new technologies can electrically measure the body's reaction to numerous stimuli and prescribe remedies to help the body regain balance. The ideas of m-fields (Sheldrake) and the notion of a holographic "implicate order" or collective field of consciousness underlying creation are also considered. This book is a very timely contribution to the scientific examination of holistic and energetic healing approaches - I'm surprised that it is currently out of print (in the USA). Maybe it's still published in the UK - I got a used copy via an Amazon marketplace seller.

This book is expertly written and researched. I bought it for the specific chapter on dental health, as there are few sources of information for those of us who believe the teeth can be healed without endless root canals. The information is absolutely riveting and should be photocopied and placed in every dental surgery in the country!
However, the rest of the book is tedious in its determination to present a scientific basis for energy medicine. He spouts endlessly about clever machines which do the same job as any competent homeopath or kinesiologist. The human touch is just not there. This is a book to glorify 'New Age-friendly' scientists, rather than to aid therapists, in my opinion. If you are a therapist and have the Donna Eden 'Energy Medicine', you can easily do without this book.

You can read almost everywhere about Mind/Body medicine; it's almost a catchword. Yet here is a book,Virtual Medicine by Dr. Keith Scott-Mumby, which details, in a friendly, passionate way, the actual research and development of the science that supports the theory. His first three chapters, including a history of energy medicine and a well-reasoned explanation of how energetic information is communicated outside the body, are worth the price of the book. Perhaps for the first time you will be able to see that what seem to be esoteric energy theories are firmly based in Quantum Mechanics, based on theories that have been accepted in physics since the 1920's! Emphasizing the diagnostic devices that can read the body's energy and therefore help predict, determine and cure diseases, Scott-Mumby goes much further, examining different healing modalities (such as sound and light). Even though he examines the dangers in such modern phenomena as ELF's (extra low frequencies) and amalgam fillings, he maintains a positive, upbeat and inspiring tone. As a researcher and bodyworker I was totally excited after finishing this book. It's a must for anyone seeking to understand the science behind the New Medicine.

I read this book and was blown away. Incredible stories, unbelievable, awe inspiring to say the least. This book describles stories of very sick people trying urine fasts, as a last resort, after years of traditional medical treatment and healing whatever ails them. I would also recommend "Your own perfect medicine" by Martha Christy and "the golden fountain" by coen van der kroon, two books I also read about urine therapy. I have done a few urine fasts and they really work to help you lose weight and junk in your body.

The universe keeps gifting us with blessings and we often miss them. Our education or culturization gets in the way. I really think the best things in life are free. The Water of Life by John Armstrong is a beginning, an opening door, that will hopefully change opinions. The cases presented are not only interesting they are convincing. My biggest complaint, is that there are not enough specifics for implementing. e.g. For application to the head/hair. How long should it remain on the hair. Should the hair then be shampooed, or just rinsed?

THE WATER OF LIFE : A Treatise on Urine Therapy by John W. Armstrong. Saffron Walden, Essex : The C. W. Daniel Co.Ltd., 2nd Edition 1971, Twelfth Impression, 1998.

Since its first publication in 1945, 'The Water of Life' has achieved something of the status of a classic. Having just finished reading it, I can understand why. Armstrong, who was a British naturopath, was a very modest man who never intended to write his book. But after repeated requests, and after considering that he had a duty to his fellow men and women to reveal the details of the miraculous therapy he had discovered, he went ahead, and we should all be intensely thankful that he did. The book is a goldmine of good sense, practical advice, brief though fascinating case studies, and astute observations on a wide range of matters.

His discovery - or perhaps rediscovery is a better word, since urine therapy was and is known and practised in many cultures and is even known to the animals - came about in a curious way. As a young man he suffered from consumption, had been passed through the hands of a whole slew of orthodox medical practitioners, none of whom had been able to cure him, and some of whom made his condition worse.

But he seems to have been a religious man, and one day, while pondering Proverbs V.xv : "Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well," he had a flash of inspiration which led him to link this passage with a few tales he'd heard about the curative properties of urine. Could this reference to "waters," he wondered, be a reference to the body's own water - urine? Having nothing to lose, he decided to give it a try.

He began drinking his own urine, was restored to health, and went on to lead a vigorous and productive life by helping to restore the health of many others, both human and animal. Incidentally, one of the interesting features of his book, which indicates something of his kindly and unselfish nature, is that he has included a Chapter XVI 'Urine-Therapy on Animals.'

In 'The Water of Life' he has provided details of the threefold 'urine fast' method he worked out, details which will be found enough to go on by mature adults of average intelligence who have a bit of common sense.

The most important point to understand, which he emphasizes throughout, is that one should NEVER attempt to use or ingest any substance other than urine and pure water - whether chemicals, drugs, alcohol, denatured foods, etc., - when undergoing a urine fast or 'penance' as he liked to call it.

The whole idea is to allow NATURE to take her course with as little interference from us as possible. A fast of urine and pure water, plus frequent, lengthy, and thorough urine massages, and, if necessary, the application of urine compresses, would, he felt, cure pretty well anyone of almost anything if undertaken long enough for the body to rid itself of toxins.

Armstrong's 'The Water of Life' is a very rich book, crammed with fascinating and useful information, and interwoven with brief case histories of almost every conceivable ailment. I couldnt even begin to do justice here to the wealth of ideas it contains.

Four books on urine therapy are currently available : those of Armstrong, Martha Christy, Coen van der Kroon, and Flora Peschek-Bohmer. Of these, the Peschek-Bohmer may be ignored as being both superficial and highly misleading on essential matters. The remaining three all serve to complement each other in different ways, with one providing what the other lacks or hasn't gone into as fully.

The serious practitioner would be unwise to overlook Armstrong. True, his is an early book and we know more about the actual constituents of urine and how it does its work today. But he was a unique character, and in his own way he was a very wise man, and I think he will always have a lot to teach us all.

The Wellness Book has been the standard in Stress Management and Mind/Body Medicine for both the general lay public and health care practitioners for a decade, and continues to be head and shoulders above other such publications! . . . This book is by far the best guide to mind/body techniques to healing and recovery of the body and spirit. Dr. Benson's Mind/Body Clinic at Beth Israel Deaconness Hospital in Boston is widely respected and uses all the techniques made available here. Indispensible.

My doctor recommended this book for me and I found it very helpful. The chapter on nutrition is lacking in my opinion (see Superfoods RX by Pratt.)I like the fact that there are many practical applications that are not "so far out there" that someone who is not into Eastern healing can still gain much from it.

The Wellness Book has been extremely helpful to me and is one of the best investments I have made in myself. I first used this book 10 years ago and was able to establish some healthful living goals and actions for myself that improved my physical conditioning immensely. I continue to use it today. What I really like about this book is that it enables each reader to really focus in on their individual lifestyles, needs, and habits and develop specific, realistic, and individualized action plans for improved and healthful living. The improved physical condition that I realized as a result of focusing on a plan and actions enabled me to climb mountains in the Sierra Nevada. I have also used techniques in this book to successfully address anxiety. This week I pulled the book off of my shelf and am going at it again. I am having fun with this exercise because I can compare my "10 loves" from 10 years ago to my "10 loves" of today and put a plan in place to realize them. Many thanks to the authors for such insightful and all emcompassing work. This book is as useful and current today as it was the day it was written.

That old saying "big things come in small packages" is perfectly proven in Joyce Sequichie Hifler's "When the Night Bird Sings" -- and don't for an instant underestimate the strength of this book by its diminutive size.

Sequichie Hifler is certainly a modern day mystic for our times. In this small collection of vignettes reflecting on her Cherokee childhood in Oklahoma, her homespun wisdom brings us closer to the true meaning of God than any would-be Deepak Chopra or Marianne Williamson.

With all due respect to those noted authors, it's the simplicity of Sequichie Hifler's writing and the warm introduction to her life through storytelling that unlocks the door and allows us to return to that wonderful place of knowing and understanding.

Throughout the book there is the haunting voice of the Great Spirit that almost demands the reader to run outside and kiss the ground, embrace the trees, touch the flowers and look into the warm eyes of all the little creatures about. We should thank them all for having patience with us while we struggle to remember and return to that which is real and important and necessary in our lives.

Sequichie Hifler writes, "the soul of the Cherokee is forever immutable in its love for a kindred spirit. And yet that love of brother is never so strong as the love for things of nature. So closely woven are these allies of spirit, we can sense that all things are brothers, all people are one with nature. All nature keeps a constant pace; it never forgets and never loses the love of life for which it was made."

Her poignant memories delivered me back in time to my own Oklahoma childhood and to the remarkable, almost daily, celebration of the mystery and magic in nature. She provides a gentle reminder that we are connected, all creatures great and small, and that by gracefully honoring nature we come face to face with the reflection of the God that exists inside each one of us.

Sequichie Hifler might have been deeply and wonderfully exposed to the innate wisdom of her Cherokee elders but she grew up in a time and place where the Christian doctrine was exceptionally unforgiving - unfortunately quite common and typical even in the Oklahoma of my youth. But we survived and transcended it by overcoming our fear of church and heeded that inner call which allowed us to make our own church in the bosom of nature and there find God and become one with the Great Spirit. With remarkable insight she reminds us that "the true church is within each one of us, and it is a personal responsibility to worship there often."

Through the words and memories of Sequichie Hifler we are introduced to some incredibly delightful characters, wise beyond their time, that help pave the path to our journey back home. We marvel at her simple but exceptionally wise mother and applaud when her equally sage-like grandmother encourages Sequichie Hifler to love herself first and unconditionally and watch, as the rest of the world would certainly follow. These are simple words to live by and truly insightful writing that can help you change your life in an instant.

I think, perhaps for me, as one who endeavors to reflect on the simplicity of life through the written word, the following passage moved me more than anything else in the book; and promises to challenge me forever to the way I see things. She writes, "Everything is full of life for such a short time. The image must be as important in my notebook when I read it again as it was when it happened. It must be able to live again on the page in another season. My winter notebook goes with me into spring, and my spring notes are soon filled out with the summer pictures. I record and record, because each image must have time to work through my own fingers and my own consciousness to live on paper. The word is only part of the Spirit, but it feeds the one who cannot stop to see, to experience the purples of the land. I cannot assume readers will know what I have seen, how a flower blooms, how a bird flies, or what fragrance is. To trigger someone else's imagination to see for themselves is to come full circle to awaken my own. No one should miss the purples that accent nature. We who record the whisper of the land must live in it, breathe it and bring it forward. Wonders await us all. But our spirits must be kindled to see and to feel. Then, when we are weary, when all the color has drained from our spirits, we can tap into the life of the land again and find a healing peace."

This is the little book that could and it speaks volumes to anyone who dares to allow Sequichie Hifler's memories to ignite their own and transcend ordinary life. As grandmother Sequichie says, "when you think you have learned all the lessons in life little one - look again." If you look for life's lessons in this book you will be rewarded beyond belief.

What an enjoyable book. When visiting Okla. I used to hear the night bird calling in the middle of the night and was so touched by this. When I saw this book, I knew I had to have it. The little stories are so wonderful, spiritual and educational. I read one story a day as a daily lesson and then I think about it throughout the day and realize there is so much more out there for us to learn and understand. Thank you for the book to the author, Joyce Sequichie Hifler. I have other books by her and enjoy every one of them and have bought for family members for the spiritual content and peacefulness. I know the land she writes about - every tree and creek in Cherokee country - for it is the place of my birth, too, and her lovely memories are as true as my own heartbeat. I even knew her beloved Papa. I write about this same land in my own book of memoirs "Sometimes A Wheel Falls Off" (Hawk Publishing Company.) Joyce Hifler wrote a blurb for my book, saying it is "deep and dear and so touching that I want more of it." We have the same homeland and the same abiding reverence for ordinary, holy place. She leads the way in telling this story.

A beautiful, absorbing collection of meditations/essays.

When The Night Bird Sings is a beautiful collection of meditations or essays by the author of A Cherokee Feast of Days. How easily and how gently these pages read, like clear water flowing in a stream. As they are absorbed page by page, sequentially or haphazardly, the reader experiences a feeling of renewal. An example of her inspiration is found in Living by Personal Measures: "Plan for good...Rise up and make your own decisions. Open your mind and spirit to new understanding and new ability to overcome any problem - especially inertia. What appears to be impossible may be the wall you can only see from your present stance. If you are willing to give thanks for something you want before you see it, you will not be disappointed. Be constant and faithful to your goals, show gratitude - and one day you will look back and wonder why you ever doubted (p.81)." All of this book of days is to be treasured. It is a gift to the heart. Highest recommendations for inspirational reading.
