"Smart" is the word for this accurate, balanced dermatology guide that presents both traditional therapies and alternative medicine choices. Written for health care professionals, yet suitable for individuals who want to take charge of their own health, this is an excellent resource for skin care.

Smart Medicine for Your Skin is immediately useful and accessible. As a family doctor, I refer to it frequently for conventional allopathic treatment modalities. What I like most however, is that it gives me multiple alternative therapies that I can review with patients. The explanations are easy to understand and my patients like to have choices.

As a bonus, the reference section provides in-depth resources for further explanations, classified by condition. This section also provides helpful listings of manufacturers, publishers and organizations all easily accessible within the framework of this one book. It belongs on my bookshelf and I recommend it for yours.

I enjoyed this well-written, informative book. The author placed medicine shows in the context of American society and culture. Who knew that medicine, advertising and show business were so intertwined? A fascinating, fun read. I highly recommend this lively book. Ms. Anderson has a wonderful way of relating a subject that did not, at first, sound like one that could hold me for a whole book. It left me wanting to know even more. A terrific and entertainingly researched tome!

Ann Anderson has done her homework. Finding information about early medicine shows is about as easy as finding a fossilized T-Rex's tooth. Anderson has done a superb job with this work and I recommend it very highly to anyone interested in the "beginning entertainment" of the United States.

A thoroughly entertaining and informative book with a subject matter I never thought would interest me. Having an advertising background, I was intrigued and facinated by the history of the medicine show and the impact it has had on our culture from a media standpoint. Well written, incredibly reasearched, and fun to read. Read it!

Book Review - SNAKE OIL...GOOD FOR WHAT AILS YA!

Ann Anderson SNAKE OIL, HUSTLERS AND HAMBONES The American Medicine Show

McFarland & Company,Inc., Publishers

As an avid reader with very eclectic tastes, I found Ann Anderson's SNAKE OIL, HUSTLERS AND HAMBONES to be highly satisfying to my literary pallet. I am an actor who has made a living over the years doing T.V. commercials. It has long been of interest to me to know just how this crazy way of marketing came to be. However, any person that has ever watched a T.V. commercial, an info-mercial or read an advertisement in a magazine or newspaper, and wondered why ads are everywhere, will get a kick out of this book. This wonderful, funny, deliciously informative book is simply chock full of "Oh, I didn't know that!" and "So that's how that got started!" moments. She has also thought to delight our eye by including many authentic labels, illustrations and flyers from the periods she discusses. She has managed to be fastidiously scholarly in her research with out being at all dry or dull. Ms. Anderson's writing style is so accessible and real, it makes one feel you're having a cup of coffee and sitting down for a long lively chat with a very interesting friend. It's full of factual information both serious and humorous. It runs the gamut of historically profound and fancifully trivial information. She provides for us the "missing link", as it were, of how we got from there to here. SNAKE OIL, HUSTLERS AND HAMBONES is a darned good read. I'm looking forward to her next book.

This terrific book is as fun as it is informative. Anderson's exhaustive research is evident on every page, and her writing style is perfect: spare enough to let the color of the topic shine through, but never dry. As she relates the history of the medicine show, she shows how modern medicine, advertising and entertainment evolved together; her skill at illuminating these linkages gives the book even more weight and depth. It's an outstanding work of scholarship...and a damned good read!

In August this year my partner of five years and I separated. Whilst it was a decision we both came to, it was never the less difficult and hard to adjust to a new life. I was wandering through a bookshop wanting to buy a particular book that I thought would assist me through this time. Then I saw "Spiritual Medicine" and bought that instead. It has been a great inspiration and practical help to me through that initial pain and confusion, and also through some other family traumas that have occurred this year.

Yesterday I was feeling rather overwhelmed by everything that has happened this year, and rather angry, but without knowing how to deal with it. I picked up your book, read the relevant sections, did the exercises, and found myself laughing and playing silly card games with my family for the rest of the evening - having a wonderful time.

I am glad that you had the courage to follow your path, because by doing so you have inspired the courage in me to do the same.

Thank you Laurie,

I have found Spiritual Medicine book to be a gem in the wholistic health field. Laurie covers so many interesting and helpful exercises for the body, mind, and soul. I have been implementing many of these in my daily life and found them most beneficial to my personal development. My spiritual journey feels enriched by the words and philosophy that are shared. Having met Laurie personally and experienced her workshops and healing sessions I am also aware of how much she lives what she believes. This I believe is the sign of a great teacher. Thank you so very much for writing what you know so that others may be inspired and helped along in their own journey. I am truly grateful.

I don't believe that you could pick the book up without going away feeling better about your life. Laurie offers so many different exercises that there is one for you no matter how you're feeling; 'Spiritual Medicine' reverberates with genuine and sincere feelings, it's like holding a gift from Laurie in your hand. I highly recommend this book - buy it, I believe that even one sentence could be life-changing.

All I can say is that this is a book that everyone needs to have in their collection. I read it, and read it and read it again, just to get a greater understanding on all of the wonderfully useful and intuitive techniques that Laurie uses. It has made me so much more aware of my own place in this world, but also has assisted me in letting go of so many of my preconceptions about what I thought that I knew about my life. I have read so many self-help books over the past 20 years and this is the best yet. It has given me a new and wonderfully easy perpesctive on a life I once thought was hard, unforgiving and in many ways unloving. I would like to say that anyone who has the opportunity to experience this book will in no small way take with them tools that they will be able to use, share and tell others about for many, many years to come. To finish this review all I can say is if you have ever felt alone, unloved, confused, insecure, unappreciated, guilty, angry, frustrated, overworked, jealous, judgemental or indeed any 'negative' emotional state, then buy this book NOW.... NOT TOMORROW, NOT NEXT WEEK, BUT RIGHT NOW!!! IF YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE MORE LOVE IN YOUR LIFE THEN READ THIS WONDERFUL BOOK NOW.............

This book was so meaningful to me that I gave a copy to a dear friend who has been trying to "hold it together" while caring for her 98 year-old mother. In her "Thank You" note she wrote, "I have read "Stuck in the Middle" and, whaddaya know, there are others out there just like me - some are much worse off - I feel fortunate. I appreciate so much your thinking of me with the book - it is comforting to read how others have coped and get the little hints and tidbits that they offer."

Stuck in the Middle is a must have, an authentic book filled with incise stories of caregivers who struggle to remain sane while juggling their lives and caring for an elderly parent. I cried, I commiserated, and I laughed out loud. I felt their pain and their triumphs; and - most importantly - the stories are a beacon, calling all caregivers to a bright ray of light.

The real-life testimonies in this book provide a rare glimpse into the personal and inter-personal dynamics in every family and every care-giving situation. These often-unaddressed human elements set the tone for the entire care-giving experience and are every bit as challenging to navigate as the more recognized practical aspects and stages of care giving. Thankfully this book gives important and reassuring insights into the entire care-giving journey--from practical tips on such matters as legal preparations to staying emotionally and physically healthy as caregiver.

This text is a major contribution to the healing and health of us all. Although the size may seem overwhelming (814 pages), the extensive Table of Contents and comprehensive Index make this book easy to use. You can quickly determine if your health problem or concern is covered, and then go quickly to that resource, which is written in plain English for the lay person.

Just this past year, this book and the sound advice it contains, plus consultations with Dr. Sandra McLanahan, helped me avoid prostate surgery. My urologist was insistent that I needed TURP surgery to deal with BPH. Holistic treatment and yoga recommended in this book helped with the BPH and gave me time to get a second opinion concerning an ongoing condition. Another urologist determined that my problem was actually interstitial cystitis (unusual for a male), which is being resolved with treatment, diet, and yoga.

Knowing Dr. Sandra McLanahan has been a boon for my health and my soul, and this book will help you feel you have been talking directly with her about your medical concerns. I have not had the privilege of meeting her brother David, but recognize his wisdom contained in these pages.

I highly recommend this book! It should be on everyone's bookshelf, ready for when it may be needed.

Dr.s McLanahan have made a unique and extraordinarily valuable contribution to health care. Truly this is a resource, not only for making wise choices when faced with the possiblity of a surgical procedure, but for also maintaining and improving your and your family's health. Integrative medicine (combining the best of conventional Western medicine with the best of alternative/complementary medicine) is rapidly becoming mainstream. Dr. Sandra McLanahan has been a pioneer in alternative/complementary medicine for over 25 years, and her brother is an outstanding surgeon with impeccable training and credentials. Both of them are very clear and down to earth writers, and their combined effort is very readable for people without medical training. Because of my own interest in integrative medicine, I've read most of this book. Because of its size and scope, however, this is probably not something most people will want to do. Used as a reference text, reading areas of personal interest because of personal or family medical issues will be of great interest to all people who care about their health. Having it available as a reference text when worrisome symptoms arise, or new medical diagnoses are made will provide all medical consumers with a much greater wealth of options than they are likely to receive from their medical practitioner. The information is well researched, documented, and credible, and can go a long way toward educating medical professional who have not yet taken the plunge into the huge and often bewildering area of alternative and complementary medicine.

A Beautiful Achievement for People & Health Care

Just holding this magnificent book is a thrill. It's 800 pages seem like a caress rather than a task as the book's preface writer, Dr. Bernie Seigel, states: " this book is for everyone". The McClanahan's have been working on this challenge for over a decade! It is woven like the finest oriental silk rug as each thread comes from life itself and the aesthetics of its design and substance instill the same emotional and intellectual reaction that a great hand made rug has on a prospective buyer. So much knowledge and wisdom are part of this great weaving that I found myself hungry to read sections apart from any given particular interest area simply by virtue of the sweep and grasp of the amazing brother and sister writing team's power. We all experience a terrible deep seated apprehension of our culture's medical care system for it is grounded in the most barbarous preoccupation with profit, innimical to genuine quality health care. Thus the angst embedded in approaching being and getting well, especially when we are assaulted by illness or disease, results in a pain often worse than the reality of our medical/health problem. The crystal clear journey that Doctors Sandra and David take us on is so friendly, so characterized by an ancient sweetness flowing from the edict to "do no harm". Theirs is truly an interest in our understanding... not being victimized by the fear of the unknown, the arrogant, the subjugating norm that is so part of our medical service system and culture in America. This book makes a major contribution to empowering all of us as we expose ourselves to the danger of dependence in that speciality of medicine where hybris is at its most menacing.

This book is a healing environs, walking us through our anatomy, chapeter by chapter, after setting the context of the path to wellness that we each experience. I think that this new and refreshing volume is a must as a sanctuary inside every family's cupboard of comforting and nourishing essentials.

A must for every patient and physician

In this exhaustive guide through the oft confusing and terrifying land of illness and it's many treatment options, the Doctors Maclanahan cover the topic from head to foot, mountain top to waterfront. As a surgical educator I found the descriptions of the mechanism of disease clear and concise. The treatment options are equally instructive and should be easily understood by the majority of the readers. For the patient, this is an essential reference for sorting out their symptoms before heading off to the clinic. Arriving at the doctor's office better informed they will be better able to retain the all too often confusing explanations and complicated care plans. In the strained environment of modern health care, these critical discussions are more likely to be monologues dished out in the time pressured, intimidating environment of the office to a stunned patient unable to absorb their meaning.

For the practitioner, be they medical student to experienced surgeon, this will be one of the more "well-worn" references that will spend more time on the desk and nightstand than the bookshelf. Particularly in these times of increased popularity of alternative therapy among patients, it behooves the modern physician to better understand the myriad of treatment options and their likelihood of success. Only with a better understanding of all the options, can we physicians make informed decisions that represent the best options for our patients to restore their health and engender their trust.

This book reveals the depth of the practice of herbal treatments and remedies in Thailand, complete with recipes and recommendations. I regard this book as a valuable reference. You will find an accurate account of the herbal compress massage, which is certainly not regarded as a new spa treatment in Thailand! Instead, it is a vital part of Thai herbal healing. A great book and a good resource on the subject of Thai herbs and their place in traditional Thai medicine.

Even in Thailand, it is very difficult to find books on this subject written in the english language. In the western world, I don't think you will find any other. Luckily, it's a good one. If you are fortunate enough to travel to Thailand you can get the edition that does have the names of the herbs written in the thai script as well. I love this book, and am grateful that it's out there.

I spend my weekends in the Thai countryside at a place called Kung Wiman and am amazed at the local knowledge about Thai herbs which they use in their everyday lives. My husband, who is Thai, taught me quite a lot, but it's been difficult because he only knew the Thai names for plants and herbs. So C. Pierce Salguero's book has been a huge help, as it gave names in Thai as well as common and Latin names along with explanations and context. It has helped me to identify plants and their uses. I am trying them out for myself and have had a good experience so far. By the way many of these herbs are now available in other countries and there are also parallels with traditions such as Ayurveda and Chinese. My only small criticism is that I would like to see the names written in the Thai script as well. I recently bought another of his books on spiritual healing which is also very good. These ancient healing techniques are unique and very much alive today and it is fantastic that C. Pierce Salguero is introducing them to a wider audience.

A beautifully inspiring book!

The Pressure Positive Company has designed and manufactured tools used widely by patients and practitioners in trigger point therapy since 1980. Since that time, active and informed self care has become increasingly recognized as a crucial component of non invasive trigger point pain management and treatment.
Valerie DeLaune's Headache and Migraine Workbook delivers highly effective, safe and easy to learn self care techniques that will help engage the patient as an active partner in easing pain and in improving function. I can therefore confidantly recommend this book to anyone who suffers from stubborn and debilitating head, neck, shoulder and back pain and dysfunction.

The author not only discusses trigger points and their associated pain patterns, but also gets into how diet, ergonomics, and other factors contribute to headaches. I prefer Clair Davies writing style (see his Trigger Point Therapy Workbook), but Valerie Delaune does an excellent job as well. Detailed pictures of real models are very helpful and are on almost every page.

Bottom line: Handy reference if headaches are your #1 concern. If not, go for Clair Davies larger book covering the whole body with somewhat less detail.

It works! I've been dealing with chronic headaches for months and got to the point where I had to stop taking so many NSAIDs so I took a chance and bought this book. While I wish I didn't have to work the points every day, I am AMAZED that in doing so I am ususally pain free afterwards. In fact facial pain that I thought was sinus related has been relieved after working the points! To me this information is invaluable.

I spend a lot of time behind a computer, and then turn around and play comeptitive contact sports-- headaches come with the territory. This workbook is packed with superb information on self-help techniques such as applying pressure to trigger points, stretching, and mobilizations. Equally helpful are discussions of "perpetuating factors," or causes of particular headache pain, and subsequent suggestions for alleviating pain long-term by changing work environment, body mechanics, and diet that I'm already applying to my daily routine. The Head Pain Map (pg. 76) was great and helped me quickly identify which sections of text to refer to.
This is a fantastic guide for people who are serious about treating their headache pain and are willing to invest some time and energy into thoroughly reading the text and practicing the techniues consistently. This book is not for someone looking for a 10-minute, instant and lasting fix. My only criticism is that some of the images of trigger points have overlays that are difficult to make out. I used this book in addition to Valerie DeLaune's Pain Relief with Trigger Point Self-help (1.3) Book-on-CDROM for expanding my self-treatment to include levator scapula trigger points and relief for neck and back pain and enthusiatically recommend it in addition to this workbook.

Ive been a Massage therapist for more than 10 years, specializing in Neuromuscular therapy and Structural Bodywork. Valerie DeLaune has written a great book! Very simple to understand for the laypeople and great information for the beginner therapist and the seasoned therapist. This should be a book to recommend for your clients. I recommend them to my patients and had great results. It has really precise explanation on how to treat trigger points, what causes them, among other interesting information. If you like to get relief from your headaches and migraines this is a must for you!

This book is more than I expected and it simply fantastic! What I was hoping for and expecting was a book that would outline the vibrational healing qualities of various plants and herbs and so forth. However it also contains beautifully drawn diagrams that illustrate meridian points and chakras, and she goes into energy healing theory and applicable healing practices such as reflexology and essential oil baths and so forth. This book is a treasure! I love it!

Aromatherapy, as an alternative healing method, has always been of interest to me. In the past, most of the books I have read on the subject have been too technical, boring or the author did not write about this subject in a way that was easily understood by his readers. That all changed once I picked up Deborah Eidson's new book titled Vibrational Healing: Revealing The Essence Of Nature Through Aromatherapy's Use Of Essential Oils. Her book arrived in the mail a few days ago and I didn't have a chance to read it until today. This morning, after I woke up, I noticed I was feeling mentally congested and my breathing was labored for no apparent reason. I decided to see what essential oils I had available in my collection that would relieve my congestion. I was intuitively drawn to my peppermint oil although I did not know why. After I had the opportunity to use the oil for a few minutes, I decided to read Ms. Eidson's book and find out what she had to say about it. Everything she wrote about peppermint oil rang true for me. It validated what I was experiencing and explained why the oil gave me instantaneously relief. Ms. Eidson's writing style is concise and compelling. Her book is very well organized and passionately written. Deborah's background and knowledge in the field of aromatherapy, in my opinion, is second to none. The wisdom she shares in her book about "essentials oils" is a must read for anyone who is into alternative methods of healing. The information she shares with her readers is safe, sound and practical. In her book, Ms. Eidson explains the use of each "essential oil" in great detail. She also provides a glossary, for some of the words she uses in her book, so her readers will clearly understand the message she is conveying to them. Most importantly, what she shares with her readers about essential oils and spiritual principles, works! I can not recommend her book highly enough.

A reference for use of aromatherapy.

This book has been an incredible tool for me to use as a reference. I have intuitively picked an essence or a combination of essences in the past, however, now I have a great set of information that provides a description of the oils and directions for releasing blocked energies. This validates my intuition and provides clarification on the mental level of these choices. I have also discerned that this book has many layers of information which provides guidance for the professional healer as well as the beginner.

An essential book.

Deborah's book has been a mainstay in my healing practice for quite a few years; for myself and others. I am very grateful to her for bringing this book to life so that we may all benefit from the information and wisdom it contains, not only on essential oils but also on energy systems of the body, dowsing, intuition, healing, and other tidbits paramount to health. Thank you Deborah!

I find the thought of doing breathing exercises based on readings from a book a bit daunting. I am the type that would much rather prefer a class or one on one instruction on how to properly do a breathing exercise. But... you don't need that with this book. It's so clearly written that you feel like the author is right there giving you instructions. Granted from time to time I would have to stop what I was doing and read it again but I always looked at the first couple of tries as a practice session and then I would do the full blown exercise once I thought I understood what it was I was to do. It's clear, concise and to the point....

This excellent book provides you with the essence of how to gain skill and confidence in better breathing. Since breathing is a part of all that we do, it is a key to mastering life for everybody no matter what their situation is, and the author does an excellent job of conveying this. Thus an olympic level athlete or a person recouperating from a serious injury will find guidance and improvement in learning these experiments.they are extremely effective, yet taught by Carola in a way that is gentle, and adapts to everyone's varied situations. Just as learning the alphabet gives us access to create and also read many words, learning these breathing experiments is a key that will open us up to a much fuller potential in all our life situations. Once these experiments are learned, they can be applied, even with just a few seconds of time to improve our breathing.Carola Speads is a master teacher, who lived for 98 years and taught this work for 83 years of her life. We are fortunate that she shared her brilliant ideas in a do it yourself format so that we can all benefit from her expertise. I recommend this book to all my friends, colleagues and patients, since it is so basic and effective to improving their lives, no matter what challenges they face or aspirations they are reaching for.

Relatively few works are likely to concretely impact the quality of our everyday life. According to my opinion, and based on the experiment which I made of the practical tools described in this book, this one is one of them.
Do not mislead you there, this work has nothing to do with the majority of the "doubtful" works devoted to breathing.
In short, this remarkable book is a great classic, you will understand quickly why. I sincerely wish you to discover it soon.

Carola has been teaching her breathing work for 79 years .

I work a lot with one of her primary students and am amazed at the insights I have benefitted from. Why she is not a household word is beyond me. I even asked for permisson to copy two exercises from the book into my breathing book. What a jewel this "Ways to Better Breathing" is. What a gift Carola has given. God bless her.
