What a moving--and educational--story!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1998-10-31
Everyone from kids, to teens, to adults will really enjoy and appreciate this lovely book about a very special gorilla and the people who take care of her and her "family." The story is quite moving, so readers almost don't realize how educational it is as well. You'll be surprised at how much you'll learn about animal behavior, habitats, and environmental protection--and you'll be charmed by the story. It's a great book for parents to read and discuss with their children. Very thought-provoking. Highly recommended.

Georgia Keeps Me Laughing
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-26
I can count on one hand the number of books that repeatedly make me laugh out loud. Three of those books are about Georgia Nicholson. This is the third instalment in her diaries.

Georgia is just an ordinary teen (or so she says) who just happens to exist in a totally crazy world. Some of the things she has to put up with are, a four-year-old sister, the king of all cats, amorous parents, idiot friends, a sex-god boyfriend, a red-herring boyfriend, ear snogging, and breasts that are too large.

At the start of the story Georgia is whisked off to Och Aye Land (Scotland) for a bit of holiday. Or it would be a holiday if it was anywhere else and had her sex-god boyfriend nearby. But returning is far from the end of her troubles as she has to rally to prevent Angus (her cat) from getting fixed and then has to deal with accidental snogging!

Some of the humor of these stories comes from the timing of the diary entries (keep an eye out for them). The rest comes from joked that have perfect delivery. Imitators have yet to come close to matching Rennison's style. If you want a good laugh, check out the whole series.

ACCURATE

This book is well done. It has the accurate lineage for Thomas Evan Laney!
The pictures are easy to scan to put in your programs. The author has done most of the genealogy unlike "Laney Lineage and Legacy". He did NOT use what was sent to him without checking to see if the material was correct. The book is NOT perfect. No genealogy book is! I just know it was as close to the mark on the Thomas Evan Laney line as it could get.
I spent 15 years on the wrong track because of the other book mentioned!!!

Excellent History of a Pathetic War
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-06
"Pathetic" is a very apt description of the origins and subsequent conduct of this war between Spain on one hand and Peru and Chile on the other. However, to both Latin American nations it invoked great passion and nationalism, while in Spain it absurdly renewed dreams of the ardent revanchists in the decaying monarchy. Pride more than anything else seemed to be the Spanish motivation for this footnote war. Well written with an eye for the interesting anecdote. I recommend this to fans of Hispano-colonial history and international relations.

This tasty book is full of the smells, textures, colors and lives of the Barrio. Lively, inspiring, heartfelt and sometimes heartbreaking, Ortiz fills this book with individuals whose lives are both representative of immigrated people and yet strikingly the stories of every woman and man. Mostly comprised of short-shorts the occasional poem is also brought in. Not all of the characters are named, and there is a sense that the reader is sometimes getting both the history and the future of the same characters. Marvelously woven, this book is a tapestry of personalities, lives, tastes and aromas. Check this book out for something unique! May I also recommend that a cup of Cuban coffee goes wonderfully!

I ordered Cloudwoman by this author and was so stunned by its beauty that I immediately ordered Build Me a Rainbow and I was NOT disappointed! On this incrdible book, the author not only narrates, she sings.

I wish I could purchase canvasses of Hedrick's art in addition to her books. I'm on my way to collecting them all. Georgia Hedrick's books are mesmerizing and are a bargain at only $!! for 2 cd's

An excellent early biography of a great American. This book tells the story of France Bozeman's early years, growing up in rural Georgia. I particularly enjoyed his detailed description of the painstaking, time consuming and labor intensive process of tobacco farming. Great material on doing laundry by hand. Very funny comments on party line telephones. This book is a very enjoyable read. I highly recommend all of France's books.

I haven't seen this particular edition, but I would very highly recommend reading the Life of this saint. St. Nina is called equal-to-the-apostles and her life is a charming study in missiology as well. Georgian literature is very rich and offers many valuable insights to those who have the will to explore it.
