This is a good reference book. It lists some different cemeteries in the Texas,New Mexico,Oklahoma and Arkansas region. Some I already knew about but lot I did not. It has some historical information along with several pictures of the actual cemeteries. Would have liked more information listed about some of the cemeteries in Oklahoma. I'm sure a book on each state and its famous or interesting cemeteries could be written. I would recommend it for people doing genealogy in this region.

Looking at life via the silver screen
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-10
Muhammad Ali and his "rope a dope", Karl Wallenda's fateful last trip across the high wire, and Gorgeous George's escapades in the ring are all part of this fascinating collection of poems by William Trowbridge. Images from the silver screen and TV mix with insights into life; reflections of today as seen through the slightly skewed perception of Hollywood creating images ingrained in our imaginations and unleashed for inspection through Trowbridge's insight. Stan and Ollie cavort as representatives of sex and anger confronted by authority; the "magma landscape" of the shoe exhibit at the Holocaust museum, and Michael's kiss of death for his brother Fredo are some of the images that Trowbridge uses as a base for his word play.
There are also a number of trips into Trowbridge's personal life, childhood remembrances and painfully examined relationships with aged parents that allow you into the true wonder of what well written poetry can accomplish; a truth and emotion that only poetry can convey.
The only misfires here are the series of poems featuring The Glad's, a sort of pseudo suburban family that seems more than a bit heavy handed in its attempt at satire. But the poems that work are truly memorable and will stay with you for a long time.

Sweet afternoon read

I pulled this one from the library shelves and literally finished it in an afternoon. Sweet romance that would be good for the younger girls, too. Miranda (the wild one out of 2 daughters) is being sent to a secluded place where she will be safe and protected from the lunatic that is sending threatening letters her way. Her father, the Senator, is too busy with his political career to be concerned with Miranda- just don't let her tarnish his reputation. Duke, ex-marine that has been hired to look after Miranda is in an accident putting him up in the hospital leaving his oldest son, Quint, to look after her. She is not his "type" so what is there to worry about? Right! And who wants Miranda out of the way? Sweet, sweet story with "love scenes" without the sex.

A great book for all scientists
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-20
This book, while perhaps slightly out of date in this age of ever changing computer technology, is a must for all scientists, not only archaeologists. If you strive for meaningful, accurate and consistent research, this book can lead the way.

While it can seem overbearing to readers not familiar with scientific philosophy and statistical techniques, Christopher Carr and the other authors do a great job of walking the novice through many of the unfamiliar terms and concepts.

This book should be used in teaching all archaeology students how to construct their research.

My only regret (and the reason why there are only four stars) is that it is now out of print and not being constantly updated for new editions.

"Free Tickets: How One Man Changed The Cultural Life of a Community" is entertaining and straight to the point, however it is way off the standards of TicketSecrets.net - I give this book 4 stars!

An Opinion of the Guidebook to Mining in America
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-27
In publishing A Guidebook to Mining in America the author has admirably accomplished a daunting task. Composed of two volumes, one covering the Western United States and the other covering the Eastern States, the guidebook is the best and only compilation that I have seen on the what, where and how to visit historic mine sites, museums, furnaces, and related sites in the 50 states (plus Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C.). It includes more than 1,700 entries with 51 maps and 374 black and white photographs. Most entries include substantial background information-mostly historical-while 130 text inserts provide greater depth on selected topics.

Although the Guidebook is likely to be of particular interest to mining history buffs, anyone else with a penchant for history-particularly industrial history-who enjoys visiting such sites will appreciate this book. These volumes provide an introduction to the mining industries of nearly every region of the United States, with substantial information regarding corresponding exhibits and sites one can visit. The user will find it quite helpful to have such information at hand regarding the potential of an area as a first step in planning a vacation. Educators should be able to select appropriate mineral industry-related topics and field trips to supplement their curriculum. Furthermore, this publication will benefit mineral collectors; they will be able to plan more fruitful excursions to distant mining districts.

The breadth of scope of the historical coverage in the Guidebook is impressive, covering aspects of the mineral industry from mining to transportation to primary processing of mineral resources, from prehistoric times to the present. A selection of interesting examples includes: Thomas Edison's attempts at magnetic beneficiation of iron ores, lead mining and smelting by the Indian tribes of the Upper Mississippi Valley, potash mines in the Southwest, sapphire mines in Montana and diamond mines in Arkansas, historic railroads in Alaska, iron ore boats of the Great Lakes, chromium mining in Maryland, titanium mining in Florida, and sea-salt manufacture on Cape Cod. Of course, you will find California gold and the expected Rocky Mountain mining camps represented, in addition to copper mining in Michigan and gold districts of the Southeast.

Several notable features of the guidebook include an informative glossary of mining terms (in Volume 2, East), extensive cross-referencing of related sites and topics (i.e. Ely, Vermont to Ely, Nevada, both of which are named for Smith Ely who developed copper mines at both locations), and addresses of state geological surveys and state tourism offices to contact for further information. In order to compress so much information without resorting to tiny print, the author relies heavily on symbols to communicate important information on the many site entries. This can be a little confusing, but if the patient reader first reads the Introduction and Guide to Entries (in Volume 1, West) and refers back to the legend of Abbreviations and Symbols on the inside cover of either volume as needed, a little practice will build familiarity with the system.

Any such Guidebook will always be incomplete, information will be dated before it is published, and inaccuracies are inevitable. The author could not visit all of the sites listed in his volumes, but sought feedback from others and made repeated inquiries to the places he had not visited. He acknowledges and addresses this shortcoming with advice on how to confirm and find out further information. Furthermore, the font selected is quite readable and the scanned photographs complement the text of the entries, adding to one's anticipation of visiting a historic mine-related site.

A Very Touching Account

Rev. J.K. Farris without doubt gave as near an exact and realistic account of the Riots and lawlessness that existed in Harrison, AR during the Railroad Strike occurring on the M & N.A. Rail strike in the early 1920's claiming the senseless death of a man when a mob was in action. Sad to believe the local law enforcement made no attempt to take charge of the mob actions occurring throughout the town. When all was said and done...The mob was successful in ruling and obtaining what it set out to gain.

Really well-written history of what at first appears to be a very small slice of 19th-century America. This book takes a seemingly straightforward idea that settlers moved to get to better--and literally healthier--land and uses the idea as a lens through which to understand much of 19th-century America. And, amazingly, her strategy works. Her arguments are convincing and I definitely felt like I was learning new ideas and fascinating tidbits all along the way.

Ulyses meets Semi-Tough
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-20
The narrator in "Joiner" is a former professional football player with a photographic memory and an obsession with history. Writing after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Joiner has already survived childhood tragedy, violence (others' and his own) betrayal, divorce and self-destructiveness, not to mention a decade or more "under the helmet." Joiner is also chaotically and unapologetically erudite, as likely to analogize a violent confrontation to lager forts as he is to a perfect block.

The book divides itself between moments in his childhood and adolescence, and telling (without explaining) how a self-confessed "neck" grew up and came out as a man who loved, and finally would fight, for his black neighbors. Much of this is free association as events in Joiner's history and the world's pass through his thoughts. Ultimately the book is about decency, often unsuspected, and ends with more acceptance and peace than you ever would! have hoped Joiner would know.

Highly recommended.

J. Rhodes or Coach Rhodes as she is known to us, her students is a very good writer and an amazing teacher. I think the book, The King Boy paints a perfect picture of life in a small southern town and shows some of the hardships along the way. This book is truly amazing as is Coach Rhodes, she has inspired many people in her career.
