Book came on time as ordered; no problem. The even better news is that it confirmed that a painting I bought at an auction 20 years ago, really is a signed Horiuchi watercolor!

A captivating account of Paul Horiuchi's life and art. This gifted and devoted talent was a shining star in the golden era of Northwest modern art, merging Oriental and Occidental components to create rich and unique forms. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the art of America's Pacific Northwest.

Really enjoyed the flavor of this book. You find yourself in a muddy tent city much like Lonesome Dove, the television series, which was surprisingly good and of course didn't last long. The mystery is interesting, although if one reads a lot of mysteries the who done it is pretty easy to figure. Anyway, this is still a good read because the author really does put the reader in this time period. Ms. Harris obviously did a lot of research. Hope we see all the characters again. (especially Chin and Mary)

In 1893, Pearl Ryan flees her New York past to take up residence in the gritty new mining town of Ruby City, Washington. Pearl earns her keep and hopefully extra cash for medical school by doing laundry and assisting the local doctor. Pearl has an ambition to become a doctor. However, she simply tells everyone in town that she aspires to be a nurse because she knows that most people will scoff at the idea of women becoming a doctor.

However, Pearl's idyll new life is abruptly disturbed when she realizes that Mayor McDonald has been murdered via poisoning. To Pearl even odder is that the doctor's diagnosis is death from typhoid fever. Other strange deaths follow. Fearing an official inquiry could expose her own secrets; Pearl begins to secretly investigate the sudden rash of deaths inflicting the small silver mining community.

THE PEARL OF RUBY CITY is a gem of a historical mystery starring several intriguing secondary characters and a wonderful but enigmatic heroine. The story line is exciting and extremely well written. Fans of historical amateur sleuth tales need to devour Jana Harris' debut novel as the author scribes a novel rarely seen in a first book. Hopefully, more Ryan novels will follow.

This book is well over due. The subject of PIM is still new but really important to all of us who are overwhelmed by the flow of information through our personal and professional lives. Jones and Teevan do a good job of bringing together a host of opinions and approaches. I can't wait for Jones's own book in the subject to come out!

I edited the book Personal Information Management with William Jones, so my opinion of it is, not surprisingly, glowing. Below is the table of contents, to help you make a more informed purchasing decision. Each chapter is written by one or more leading researchers in the chapter's subject area, and is worth reading independent of the book. However, the book also holds together well as a whole, with many common themes, and even common characters, being woven throughout.

This book uses principles developled by the University of Washington Physics Education Group. The inquiry method frees the instructor from the board, and asks students to learn on their own by facing their own misconceptions.

I love this set of books. These books require students to learn not by lecture, but by doing labs and explaining their results.

These books certainly are not appropriate for high school students (the age level I teach), but they are the perfect resource for their teacher. A high school student needs very clear instructions and needs reassurance that he is on the right track. These books are not clear enough for these students.

However, as a teacher, I can adapt the material, write my own labs, and give the students something that is on their level.

I've done the electricity unit, as a student, and realized that there was quite a lot about circuitry that I don't know. I was a Physics major, but I never truly understood the material, I only thought I did. I'm looking forward to trying some of the other units and finding out what else I don't understand!

The other useful feature of these books is the cost. The labs use only very inexpensive equipment. For someone like me in a small, rural school, this is a godsend! In a few years, I hope to develop my program to the point that my students will get a good, high-level education, and low cost labs help make this possible sooner.

Dale Chihuly's Hippie Commune begets Studio Glass Movement
Helpful Votes: 45 out of 48 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-12
Pilchuck Glass School is the place where every artist who works in glass comes to take or teach a summer class (2 1/2 weeks). It's the glass art world's seat of power where craft process is shared, artists go to refresh themselves (located on 40 acres of land amidst thousands of acres of tree farm overlooking the most spectacular vista including the waterway from Seattle to Alaska it's hard not to get in touch with your soul), and it's the place where artists return each summer just to be with each other. This is a very special place.

Dale Chihuly started Pilchuck one summer more than 25 years ago when he was teaching at RISD. He thought it would be fun to go west and blow glass...there was no Studio Glass Movement and, as you will read when you buy this fabulous book, there wasn't much of anything but the extrodinary spirit of a group of very special people.

Pilchuck has grown to be one of the world's most important arts institutions with a Board of Trustees that "gets it"...and we know because we've been Trustees for years.

Tina Oldknow has written an easy to read "page turner" that's a scholarly work (she conducted more than 150 interviews in two years of thorough research for this book) while it's picture filled format (gorgeous color photographs of art made from glass as well as historic photos of the artists and their art) makes it easy to understand for those who don't really like to read art books. This is a don't miss read for anyone interested in art or in the social history of the 70's, 80's and early 90's.

I am humbled to say that I was blessed with the opportunity to read Place of Sage many years ago - before it was published. Even now, I can vividly recall how deeply Lyn D. Nielsen's story touched my life and my heart.

Now, years later, I have been given a new and unexpected blessing - the opportunity to see and hear the reactions of others that have also been profoundly impacted by Place of Sage.

I have found that the story told in Place of Sage offers young readers insight into adulthood and the difficult decisions one must sometimes make. It also allows older readers the chance to reflect on their lives - and appreciate the moments and choices that have defined who they have become.

Absolutely beautiful!

Lyn has done a wonderful job with this story. It's a beautiful love story, an inspiration for us all. Her description of the area that becomes the focus of the book is stunning. She makes you feel the emotions of the main character without forcing them on you. Many times I was close to tears, and finally gave in at the end. But they were tears from the beauty of the story, not sadness. I highly recommend this book to anyone!

This is the best PNW plant and animal identification book on the market (and I have lot of such i.d. books). Lots of really good color pictures and detailed b/w's. Informative text on life history/cycles. Good index and well-organized. Great for helping children get going on school projects (the Latin names are there, but the text is plain English, flows well, and provides information that interests ordinary persons of all ages who enjoy the out-of-doors). Would make a nice gift for someone new to the area or otherwise interested in the topic.

I fell in love with wild plants at the tender age of 11 when I went to camp with my 5th grade class. We did plant identification and I became intrigued by all the wonderful plants in the NW. WHen I got home I poured through my mom's copy of this book. I had been seeing it on our coffee table since I was like a tot! I fell in love with plants. This book has beautiful color pics of all kinds of wonderful plants and animals. It's awesome!

The comments I'm about to make come from p.xiv of the Introduction of the book:"Recalling that many important things have come to us from the Greeks--democracy, tragedy, the Olympic Games, mathematics, logic, philosophy--Vlastos wonders... if the Greeks really discovered what we now mean by 'science'. ...Even if they were not able to 'grasp the essential genius of the scientific method', they did 'discover the notion of a cosmos 'that is presupposed by the idea of natural science and by its practice.' In fact, the early Greeks had 'the perception of a rational universe'." Similar to the Greeks, Vlastos accomplishes a logical and impartial description and interpretation of Plato's thought, that so many previous commentators have missed. I recommend this book to anyone that has deep interest in Greek thought in general and Plato in particular.

In this absolutely splendid book, Vlastos traces the origins of the idea of the cosmos and, indeed, of nature itself as a subject for intellectual inquiry. He also helps the reader make more sense of Plato's Timaeus than a casual first reading might ever suggest is possible. The book is a perfect melding of scholarship with Vlastos's gift for conveying big ideas to a broad audience.

Cases in Sucessful Preventive Medicine - Injury Control

Review Date: 2000-07-07
Injuries; unintentional, suicidal and homicidal; remain the leading cause of years of life lost and of disability for children, and a leading problem for the elderly in the United States.

Traumatic episodes of scald burns from hot water heaters, conflagrations and chemical poisoning associated with dropped lit cigarettes, near- and drownings around improperly gated or fenced home swimming pools, and easily available "non-safety packaged" firearms tragedies- these are examples of the thousands of annually preventable consumer product related injuries and deaths. And yet, aside from the many books on the statistics and epidemiology of injury, or on descriptive or anaytical reports with normative recommendations for action, there are few that illustrate, as does Political Approaches.. the "how to's" for successful legislation and advocacy so effective in the history of leadership in public health and medicine.

Each case study of how the " injury prevention docs " did it is followed by a complete set of useable references and by a follow-up ' informal' interview with the expert.

While this book was written almost ten years ago, the stories show the constants of historical personalities, values and events common to various historical settings of medicine and public health that make the differences for saving lives and limbs.

Dr. Berman, an early pioneer from the new generation of researchers, practitioners and educators, visions injuries as preventable, not random events nor fate, and shows the reader how to lead on the sometimes lonesome but invigorating road of prevention of injury disabilities and deaths.

This engaging and colorful account of the history of U.S. food regulation provides excellent perspective for better understanding the recent spate of high-profile, food regulation trade disputes between the U.S.and Europe, and within Europe, such as the "Banana Wars", "British Beef", and "Genetically modified corn" incidents. A must-read for anyone who who has interest in the unique nature and psychology of government actions in dealing with issues around "our daily bread". This book appears to have been subjected to a very rigorous "peer review" and I expect it will become a classic reference work.
