These comics are enjoyed by our entire family. Our 10 year old son can't seem to put them down as the illustrations and content are clever and entertaining. We love how Bently Boyd brings history to life in a fun, creative and easy reading style. After my son is finished reading he can't wait to share what he read with the entire family. We have acquired the entire set of Chester Comix with Content Series and love them all. These make a GREAT gift for anyone of any age or even for teachers as they are an awesome learning tool. A gift that keeps giving. This is a definate must have for the entire family. ENJOY!

Very Interesting Historical Opinions
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-20
This book reflects on the relocation of slaves back to Africa and their resettlement in Liberia. The narratives are all by slaves, some expressing their content and others their discontent. As a Liberian, it was funny to find one of the major complaints was lack of bread, only rice and cassada (cassava as spelled in this writing), our favorite staple foods. Other aspects of life complained about were (which we consider parts of everyday life) : driver ants, palm oil, jiggers, and yes a freed slave in 1853 complains about a skin disease called craw-craw.

The two most interesting points in this book for me: One content slave pointed out that he left America because he knew in his heart there had to be somewhere on this earth where the black man could be free. Another discontent slave, who hustled his way back to America, said he would rather be a slave in America than live in Liberia without any hope.
In life there are leaders and followers, some saw an opportunity for a new beginning and others saw too much work ahead of them when leaving a country where everything was already established. Regardless of who we identify with, I am grateful to have come upon this work which provided me some insight into the history of my country.

"Licentious Liberty' in a Brazilian Gold-Mining Region : Slavery, Gender, and Social Control in Eighteenth-Century Sabara, Minas Gerais" is a wonderful examination of the interactions between masters and slaves in the gold-mining areas in eighteenth-century Brazil. This masterpiece shows how the gender relations between female slaves and their white masters have often subverted the values of a hypocritical and conservative society, allowing the changing of status of black women, among which the most famous one was certainly Chica da Silva, a former slave who began to live among the members of the limited gold-mining elite after becoming the concubine of a portuguese official. This book is speacially advisable for those interested in slavery and general sociology.

Colonial Botanist

This book deserves a long review. But, briefly, the 'story' of John Bartram involves the reader in Bartram's family and the colonial world of London and Philadelphia. The genuine passion that Bartram had to learn about and discover new botanical plants gives the reader a unique outlook. Bartram's travels into Indian territory are a window into uncharted lands. Bartram's relationship with his son William is often disapointing to the father but show a sensitivity that is interesting to see.
This seems to be a solidly researched and approachable book.

Miguel Angel is to say in Carlyle words , the Hero made Artist .
If we had more individualities with his courage , the symphony of the civilization would be more glorious .
If we persisted in search of the affinities of such artist we would find them in Beethoven . If not go and listen the last quartets of Beethoven (Op. 130 and 132, for instance) and proceed to watch the last works of Miguelangelo . You will not find another music more appropriate which illuminates with so fevered state, intriguing pathos and dark clouds mood . He, as the legitimate son of the ancient Greeks lived in the right time and in the right place Florence to show the world the Renaissance not only was the most important artistic movement of the mankind story but it was more than necessary a figure of his stature appeared in the middle of this land .
He belonged to the lineage of the deep characters , violents , greatful , that strengthens and fight passionately.
Miguel Angel was the timeless inspiration to many other thinkers , writers and artists such as William Blake, Goethe, Beethoven , Liszt, Mendelssohn, Lord Byron , Carlyle and Fürtwangler, among others and even his legacy seems to have not any kind of restrictions.
The author makes a careful study and explores dilatory every stage of his complex life with magnificent illustrations and broad gusto that it represents an exquisite refinement exercise for the intellect and mind to read this fundamental biography
The description of the Sistine Chapel is simply a imagination triumph and the highest and supreme good taste .
Terrific recommendable.

Well written portrait of the early Quakers.
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-01
This is a very nicely done portrait of early Quakerism. The characters are lovingly brought back to life as the book depicts the world of the early Quakers.

The book may be seen as controversial, as it seems sometimes to portray George Fox in a less than admirable light. However, it is careful not to lower itself to character assassination, and instead paints Fox (who some authors find hard to criticise) as an altogether human character.

My biggest problem with the book is that it seems to somewhat gloss over the specifics of James Naylor's rift with Fox, but perhaps this is because there are many other books which cover this aspect. However, I did find this to be a strange omission in an otherwise flawless study of the charismatic Quaker movement.

My final criticism is that this book ends too soon. I would have liked to read more about the Quaker movement in the final years of the 17th century, and how the movement came to terms with the state that had for so long repressed it. I guess I must hope for a sequel.

Despite the minor criticisms outlined above, I still highly recommend this book.

A thoughtfully detailed and entertaining narrative with lots of captivating photos of the key people and places of Lincoln's visits to the Commonwealth. I also liked the appendix which provided guidance on how to follow and experience the Lincoln Trail. I'm not a Lincoln expert, so the accounts of his experiences here were new to me and fascinating to read... but that also means my rating is just a reflection of how much I liked this book, not a comparison to other books about Mr. Lincoln. It is unquestionably well-written.
