Cardiac arrest; a layman's quide
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-04
The results of treatment of cardiac arrest by professionals (para medics and physicians) is dismal. Less than 5% survive. The solution is bystander resuscitation, and the use of the automatic external defibrillator, both of which are very will described in this pocket sized manuel.

This book provides a concise review of the subject, which is universally applicable, not just to professionals, but to those with little or no medical training. It is profusely illustrated, with easy to understand instructions of the Heimlich manuver, chest compressions, etc.

It covers the entire spectrum from basic life support to advanced cardiovascular support, by physicians.

Best of all, the price ...

Buy it! You can save someone's life someday.

An impressive effort to showcase innovation and creativity in writers of nonfiction
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-08
Five Years Of 4th Genre is a 352-page collection of creative nonfiction works, following the 1999 publication of "Fourth Genre: Explorations in Creative Nonfiction," an impressive effort to showcase innovation and creativity in writers of nonfiction. Selections of essays are chosen from five years of award-winning essays and memoirs, also examples of literary journalism and meditations and even personal criticisms. The co-editors of the original "Fourth Genre" journal , Michael Steinberg and David Cooper, were seeking examples that were described as original and unique, even whimsical. Having piled up five years of awards, Martha Bates (Acquisitions Editor at Michigan State University Press and a veteran of the publishing industry) has accomplished the task of choosing some of the best and most creative of these works. Consequently, the twenty-five essays comprising Five Years Of 4th Genre read very quickly, with many an intense bite or surprise twist. It is a gripping set of reality frameworks from which life truths peep through frequently in many a frivolous disguise. Needless to say, even though Five Years Of 4th Genre contains a wealth of worthwhile and genuine literary criticism, it is a fun and easy read. Beware of those surprise twists -- they can take the reader to unexpected destinations. It is always a treat to have such masterful writing to feast on, even at the rate of one chapter or page at a time. Five Years Of 4th Genre is suitable for writing education classes/resources as well as academic library reference collections.

Since lower Michigan is rather flat, it's sometimes hard to appreciate the vast beauty of the scenery. This book has many high quality photos showing the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline, fall foilage, dunes, and ice flows.

An extraordinary collection

This book should be on the desk of every policymaker ! As a deacon in the Roman Catholic Church I would also hope that deacons, animators of justice and peace in the local Church, would read and ponder this difficult and complex problem. After 20 years of my own study of the problem of war and peace in the nuclear age, with the end of the Cold War, there seemed to have emerged more questions than answers for myself and others.

This collection of essays gives the reader insight into the multilayered complexity of what to do with nuclear weapons, how useful are they, and what can we do to get rid of them in the future. I was impressed by the depth of the essays from each of the contributors, even when I disagreed with some of the assumptions or conclusions. This book forces one to wrestle with the unfinished agenda of human survival and thrival. As a Christian theologian, the ethical argument opposing nuclear weapons forces one to grapple with the complexity of this issue as an act of love. It is a struggle directed to understanding this seemingly unsolvable problem and the possibilities for living in a more just and peaceful world. This cannot be accomplished without knowing something of the world and problem of nuclear weapons. This book offers a superb overview of this most important and vexing dilemma at this time in human history. We cannot hope to secure some level of peace and justice without study and discussion of the emerging constellation of problems and developments surrounding this issue. This book helps us to understand.

excellent, especially for self-study
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

I have taught academic writing for almost 10 years and have myself put together a handbook. This is the single best book that I have found for self-study for non-native speakers. In fact, it is not only useful for graduate students, but for anyone who looks to improve their formal language skills, for professional purposes such as report-writing.

It includes many useful exercises, covering details and nuances of the English language. The sample materials are interesting and engaging. It has sections on all the important aspects and comprehensively covers the subject, including formal grammar and style, data commentary, writing summaries & critiques and ends with two chapters that guide readers through constructing their own research paper.

The authors share some of the writing that their students have done, which also supports the learning process, as you consider what works, and what doesn't. I haven't seen the 2004, second edition, so I cannot compare.

If, as a non-native speaker you are looking for a great book to work with, this is what you need. The same is true if you teach non-native students to write academically. I recommend inquiring, if you buy secondhand, what state the book is in, because if the exercises have been filled out already, it will detract from the value.

Robert Gurval is a great writer. In a field of dry style and stale ideas, Dr. Gurval is a welcome change. If this book is in your field, you really should read it. His book is well organized, complete, convincing and stimulating.

Excellent for learning Arabic idioms
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1998-06-10
Having studied Arabic at degree level and now teaching the language as a non-native speaker to foreigners, I would thoroughly recommend this book to advanced learners of Arabic. It is the best one I have come across at this level. It can be used independently by the student or as a teacher resource. What makes it so good is the way vocabulary and idioms are recycled. Also the teaching methodology is vey sound. One slight problem is that I have not been able to get hold of the accompanying tapes from the UK.
