Maryland By It's Historic Markers
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-19
The authors do a great job of recording and illustrating Maryland through it's historic markers.

I suspect all states have markers. Most do not know where they all are or present them in any coherent form. This book remedies that situation for the state of Maryland. The book will serve as a snapshot of Maryland's rich history through a geogrpahically based capsule of what happened in each county. It also serves as a wonderful tour guide for any inclined to undertake history and event based touring.

The book is richly illustrated with first class photographs. (One of the annual lighting of Anteitam Battlefield is brilliant -- I called to get information for a visit). The synopses of each marker and event give a good sketch of what happened where.

By the way, the same authors have been commissioned to do a photographic history of Delaware throught its historic markers (due out in the Fall of 2001). Anyone interested in a small state that packs a lot of history will enjoy that work.

Prescient spinsters

This is a beautiful book that vividly recounts the story of two Baltimore sisters who never got married and who, in the early XXth century, became two of the foremost modern art collectors in the United States. Following a chronological pattern, it is full of previously unpublished photographs (the authors are the great-niece and great-great-niece of the Cone sisters)and marvelous illustrations of the paintings acquired by Claribel and Etta Cone, paintings which today form the core of the Baltimore Museum of Art collection. The text is lively and replete with anecdotes that give a good idea of the artworld in Paris (Picasso, Matisse,Gertrude Stein, the art dealers, etc) and of the society of a medium-size industrial city in the United States during the first three decades of the XXth century.

Light, but good reading

An Important Piece of Railroad History
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-01
Conquering the Appalachians is an important piece of American railroad history. This book documents railway construction in the Appalachian Mountains in the early years of the twentieth century. The construction of tunnels and trestles is described in detail and enhanced by crystal clear black and white photos from the collection of William Cary Hattan, the civil engineer who actually built large portions of the Clinchfield and Western Maryland Railways. Well written and researched by Hattan's daughter, Mary Hattan Bogart, this book would be an important addition to any library of railroad books. It belongs in the reference departments of every public library within the states of Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Future generations need access to what Hattan and his men accomplished in those states with dynamite, carts, mules, pick axes, shovels and sheer muscle. Many of their trestles and tunnels still exist, unused for their original purpose, but monuments to determination and grit. I've seen two of the trestles, one in Pennington Gap, Virginia and another nearby. They are awe inspiring for anyone who has read this book.

Excellent source for the urban outdoor enthusiast

This book takes you to outdoor areas mostly within thirty minutes drive from downtown Baltimore. If you just need a breath of fresh air and a walk in the country to boost you up, this one is for you. This book is a great find for those Baltimorans who have lived here forever and never knew about these places. It is also great for all those newly transplanted to Baltimore. Mr. Fisher gives detailed descriptions of the areas and interesting historical tidbits. He knows his stuff. However, as he admits, the areas he describes are constantly changing. They are parks that are being renovated, adding new facilities, etc. ONe of our favorites is North Point State Park. If it weren't for this book, we would have never found it.

This glove-box sized travel companion will be constant fascination for anyone who grew up in or lives in the DC area. Mark Opsasnick's phenomenal research abilities and fantastic love of popular culture combine to produce a guide to this DC suburb like--well, like no other, to put it simply. We aren't talking AAA, Fodor, or even Lonely Planet. Instead, expect enough esoteric facts, odd details, and delightfully quirky landmarks to make you want to plan your next vacation around a spot most of us otherwise regard as rather dull.
