It is a faithful transcript of 471 wills, and it contains data on several thousand related individuals for the years 1640-1760. Information contained in the wills includes full name of the testator, names of heirs and their relation to the testator, bequests of real and personal property, names of executors, witnesses and appraisers, and dates of recording and probate. Four separate indexes conveniently guide the reader to his objective.

A day by day look at Thoreau
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 1997-07-18
"Oct. 22nd, 1837. 'What are you doing now?' he asked, 'Do you keep a journal?'-- So I make my first entry today." Thus begins Thoreau's Journal, made up of more then two million words and covering about twenty-five years of his life. No other work of Thoreau's better exhibits his discipline as a writer and his devotion to the natural world. In the Journal can be found the fragmented foundations of masterpieces such as Walden, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, The Maine Woods, and Cape Cod. But what is perhaps more interesting to a reader of Thoreau's Journal are his thoughts and insights on topics such as friendship, love, religion, nature, bravery, heroism, war, slavery, the art of writing, and, most important to Thoreau, the art of living. Anyone with any interest in Thoreau will find his Journal to be an invaluable aid in understanding and following the life of one of America's most profound prose writers

Maine's Steamboats and their Magical Era
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-10
Maine's Steamboating Past is part of the Images of America series, and it is an absolute gem. It is a pictoral history, with articulate, well-researched commentary by author Donald A. Wilson. Anyone with the remotest connection to the magical lakes of Maine will become awestruck by these haunting images. The heyday of steamboating on the Maine lakes was the early 1900s, and they had disappeared by the mid-1900's, so there are increasingly few living people who recall those old steamers. Yes, there are a few early stemers remaining, such as the Katahdin, at Moosehead Lake, but they are tourist attractions, not the public transport they once were. The book is organized into six sections covering the Belgrade Lakes, Moosehead Lake, the Rangeley Lakes, the Sebago and Long Lakes region, smaller lakes, and the Penobscot River. But the book is about the boats, and to some extent, their captains. The destinations themselves take a back seat; don't look for familiar vistas in the backgrounds. In addition to mostly very clear black and white photographs, Wilson also illustrates steamer tickets, advertising flyers, as well as schedules and rates.

In addition to their use as passenger ferries, steamboats were used as mail carriers, freighters, icebreakers, log carriers, and tug boats. The photos show all of the shapes and sizes, from the small, sleek, and graceful steam launches not much bigger than a canoe, to the 500 passenger Katahdin, launched on Moosehead in 1914. It is incredible that Wilson managed to find out so much about the people and places and the boats that connected them so long ago. You cannot help to be amazed by his scholarship. And when you catch yourself daydreaming about those days and those boats, you will have Maine's Steamboating Past to thank for the clarity of the vision.

This soft cover pictorial of the State of Maine is filled with aerial photographs of the Pine Tree State from Fort Kent to Kittery. The four seasons are depicted in their colorful splendor as they can only be seen in Maine. The author/photographer has captured the true essence of the Stae's beauty. A must have for all who love Maine; both natives as well as those "from away."

Neil Rolde had given us a history book for the regular guy. It is well written and full of interesting illustrations. He gives good history, without making it dry or overdone. For anyone who is interested in the history of Maine, but does not go in for the giant tomes and multi-volume sets, this is the book for you.
