...and it will change your understanding of Islam, religion, emotions, and self-cultivation. Clear, engaging, and sophisticated, this study integrates rich ethnography that makes South Suluwesi come alive on the page, with careful theoretical discussions of our words for describing the psyche and education. And it has some great pictures, too.

For Locals and Visitors, Alike

Informative and interesting guide to local geography. Much more than a tourist guide for kids, this points out local attractions plus a bit of history and legend. Attractive captioned illustrations enliven each page and at times add a touch of humour. Some of the vocabulary may be difficult for youngsters, but the format lends itself to reading aloud. Ms Kaupuiki also includes a glossary and pronunciation guide for many of the Hawaiian words, although it seems to be taken for granted that readers will know that Peter and his dog are wearing helmets that ancient Hawaiian warriors wore, though why they wear them, I don`t know (because he is skateboarding?) I grew up in Hawaii, with local history lessons and all, but even I learned a thing or two from Peter Panini. My two boys enjoy hearing about places they know, as well as finding out about the other islands and some basic history and lore. I wonder if other states have as interesting geography books for kids about their region.

An Appreciation of a Hard Journey to Become an American

About 10 years ago I bought this book for my father, the first son of my immigrant grandfather from Japan who arrived in Hawaii about 1915. My father did not appreciate the book because it reminded him so vividly of the difficult days of living on the plantations and working in the canefields almost under slavelike conditions. This book truly depicts, through words and photos, an accurate history of the Japanese immigrants who sought a better life in Hawaii. Anyone who reads this book will have a good feel of the immigrant life and cannot leave the book without an appreciation of what we have today.

This is the translation that shows various images throughout time, comprehensive descriptions and has Japanese and English translations of the poems side by side.

For great commentary and background, I return to this one again and again.

I love the line illustrations.

Happy browsing and reading!

I am impressed with the thought put into the pattern selections, the number of designs and the borders included. The selection - 32 designs- will meet the needs of the beginner to the advanced quilter. Great find!

Another Excellent book of patterns

This is basically the same review I gave for her other 2 books:
I have three of her books in this format and they are all Excellent! Beautiful pictures and patterns. She breaks the patterns apart to give you single and mutli color options, very nice. There are pictures in several color schemes and close-ups of the quilting. Information and meaning about the particular flower or design element is given for each pattern. Instructions for those who don't know how to applique' are very clear. You will want to grab some fabric and start cutting and sewing right away.

A Treasure

This book is a treasure. "Place Names of Hawaii" is an exceptional and important reference book for anyone who is interested in the Hawaiian language or anyone who just wants to know the meaning behind the names of streets, towns, valleys, land sections, fish ponds, craters, mountains, streams, islands, churches, buildings, et cetera. Every entry has an English translation of the Hawaiian name (when possible) as well as background information. It is invaluable reference book for any Hawaiian language student, but "Place Names" should also be in the library or book collection of everyone who lives in Hawaii who has a library or book collection.

Place Names of Hawaii, and Supplement to the Third Edition of the Hawaiian-English Dictionary. was the 1966 first edition, it had about 1,125 entries and was described as a "Supplement to the Third Edition of the Hawaiian-English Dictionary. The Hawaiian Dictionary: Hawaiian-English, English-Hawaiian is perhaps the most important reference book on the Hawaiian language and "Place Names" is a product of the same team of Pukui/Elbert. This is the "revised and expanded edition" with about 4,000 entries. It should also be considered a supplement to the UH Hawaiian Dictionary, although it is also a stand alone reference and can be used and enjoyed all by itself.

The revised and expanded edition of "Place Names" has been available for more than 30 years and I can not understand how it is that I am the first to write a review for Amazon, considering how important this book is to Hawaii and its language. If you like this book, I also suggest Hawaiian Street Names: The Complete Guide to Oahu Street Names. It lists many streets that are not listed in "Place Names". Make sure you get the updated edition.

The Hawaiian language lives not only in its spoken language, books, songs and chants, but also in its place names. I live on Oahu and find it curious and confounding that many people who live here have no understanding, curiosity or appreciation about the place names that they deal with every day, like the street they live on or the town they live in. Many do not even correctly pronounce Oahu or Honolulu. The island is not "Awahu" nor is it the city of "Hanalulu" or "Hanolulu". Get this book so that you can learn and understand what those Hawaiian place names mean and help keep Hawaii a special and beautiful place.

This is the first edition of "Place Names of Hawaii" which contains only 1,125 entries. I recommend the "revised and expanded edition" of Place Names of Hawaii, because it contains about 4,000 entries and the text is a little larger and easier to read. Please read my review for Place Names of Hawaii, the "revised and expanded edition."
