Hawaiian Sovereignty Shakes Off Its Chains!

This is an excellent, in depth examination of a crucial issue weighing at the heart of "Amerika" here at the beginning of a new millennium: Indigenous self-determination and the illegal military occupation of a sovereign Kingdom for the last 100 years. Highly recommended reading for every American, and for those who wish to understand the fundamental heritage and history of the Hawaiian people, guardians of a sacred, wise, powerful, ancient culture.

This work pulls together a wide range of material covering the history of Buddhism in Cambodia. Considering just how bare the book shelves are on this topic, I can only jump with joy that it has appeared. Problems with the historical record are carefully pointed out with ample references and cautionary notes for those who would look further. This book should be an essential part of anybody's collection on the development of contemporary Buddhisms in Southeast Asia. Just one small point: there is a most welcome inclusion of oral histories (for example with reference to the origin of place names - but there is insufficient warning that there are often many legendary origins for names - a case in point is the origin of the name of Phnom Sambau and Phom Krabau - certainly Harris is correct, but this is not the only version by any means. Highly recommend this book to anybody interested in the area but would equally strongly suggest reading it alongside Marston and Guthrie (2004) to round out some aspects of modern Buddhism.

Aerial photographs of Hawaii

A super book for Hawaii lovers! The photos are mostly spread over two pages to give the full impact and the colours and sharpness of the images are good. The photos span most of the Hawaiian islands and focus on landscapes as well as seascapes and towns. The written accompanying information is brief but concise and useful, as the main focus is on the beauty of the image. Certainly a book you can lose yourself in for a while. My only regret, is that there were not more pictures!

Still Applicable Over 30 Years Later

For anyone interested in modern Hawaii politics or image-making in political campaigns this one's a must-read. Catch A Wave is focused primarily around the rise and final political victory of Hawaii's first elected governor after statehood, John Burns. Many factors unique to Hawaii's changing society are laid out in an easy to read and somewhat dramatic fashion. The real climax of this book for me was Burns' 1970 primary victory over Gary Gill, his idealistic & rather sharp-tongued lt. governor who had significant leads weeks and months before the primary election day. What led to his victory was a highly organized (with longtime support) and expensive media campaign using advertising consultants near and far to promote the greatest attributes of 'The Great Stone Face'. This may not seem like anything really significant now, but back in the late 1960's and 1970 the research and campaign of the Burns camp was ahead of it's time. The American Association of Political Consultants reviewed Burns' campaign along with five others following the general election. The International Association of Political Consultants chose the Burns campaign (the only American campaign) as one of two to be reviewed. His sixty-second collage testimonials won top honors at the fourth annual International Film Festival.

Considering how hard it is to find resources on an "under-studied" language like Chamorro, I was surprised how informative this dictionary was. It contains a Chamorro-English side and an English-Chamorro side. (I tell you this because several "under-studied" language dictionaries are worthless.)

I highly recommend this to anyone who wishes to study Chamorro.

Literary Criticism with a Heart
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-25
This is an excellent, beautifully written critical study of this important novelist, one that dares to take literature and those who write it seriously. Angela Yiu well avoids the tired and tiresome routine of character assassinating the author in the name of leftist politics or deconstructing the work which the author labored so hard to construct. Instead, this study clearly recognizes the spiritual and ethical importance of great literature (which is why I read lit, anyway; I don't know about anyone else). Yiu explores the wide range of genres in which Soseki wrote, and even among his novels she addresses their stylistic multiplicity, but her consistent focus on the theme of chaos and order keeps this study itself from spinning out of control. Great scholarly work.

Paradise? There's something creepy under those swaying palms
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-21
The Hawaii known for its swaying palms and crashing seas is not the one depicted here. "Chicken Skin", the Hawaiian term for Goosebumps, makes us realize that paradise is not exempt from the supernatural. It is a wonderfully scary collection of true ghost stories retold by the affected locals. Best read under flickering candlelight.
