My sister recommended this book to me. I was intrigued, so when I read it this last weekend I was pretty excited. Wow, what a great book!!! I loved the characters and Ramos talks about the city like someone who loves it.

I was drawn into the lives of the characters right off. They come across as very realistic and natural. I want to read more about them.

Ramos also managed to surprise me with the ending which happens less and less lately.

I Was Left Slack-jawed.

A beautiful, fluid and masterfully written novel. It takes what seems to be a simple act of murder in a dive bar called La Tortuga and builds, nuance by nuance, a group of characters and a series of events that are utterly real. We look through the eyes of Kiko Vigil, as he is viciously murdered while sitting across from his lover, Lorraine Garza, the wife of a crime lord. Only a drifter in wheelchair, knocked over by the killer as he runs to his car with a struggling woman slung over his shoulder, has the answers everyone is looking for. Danny Mora, or Moony as only his oldest friend knows him, is hired by Vigil's colleague to investigate the murder when the INS decides it would be better for time to swallow it hole. The deeper he gets into his investigation, the further he gets from the drifter and closer to a killer that puts all he knows and loves into mortal danger.

This book is a stand alone to Ramos' other books in his Luis Montez series. It's ending left me in shock, slack jawed at what had just happened. You could not find a higher standard of writing than the one found in this definitive work.

This is a great book and is so easy to follow. The book is an amazing roadmap for people in business and for families. The examples in the text are inspiring and easy to apply to my everyday life. I am using this book to re-align the way I make decisions and I am so happy that the author is donating a portion of the proceeds to charity.

I recommend the book for business executives as well as families!

This is a really awesome book. It takes you into the minds of 6 college students trying to live in a condemed home. These six people need to learn how to cope and live together, by making....and breaking rules. I highly recommend it to any teenager out there looking for some entertainment.

Cool. Hip. It's like the "Real World".

This book, Reality 101; Never Fall In Love, lets you get into the author's head and see each caharacter as to who they're really like. Mac, the funny, sporty boy. Micael, the preppy, dependable, older-brother type, and Dane, the been-to-jail-for-little-things-but-YOU-don't-have-to-know- that-thay-were-little, punk rocker are the boys. Then there's Emily, who spent her whole highschooldating vanilla ice-cream, Holly, who daydreams like a five-year-old and Paris, who was named after her MARRIED father's girlfriend, enough said. With humor and many other ways, this book really keeps you entertained. I really enjoyed it.

My husband and I have chosen several of the hikes included by Ms. Gilliland and, as neophyte hikers, have found them very enjoyable. Most importantly, we have come to depend on both the times given for the hikes as well as the difficulty ratings. I would not hesitate to take a hike from this book if it sounded attractive to me -- I'd know I could count on it being just as described

Well done!

Excellent book for hikers not really familiar with the Summit County area. I am from Ohio, and my family found the book most helpful in ranking the difficulty of hikes, estimating the time of our trips and how strenuous a hike we were looking at. Also the maps & directions were right on the money. Without this book we would have missed out on some fantastic hiking in the Breckenridge & Frisco areas!!

If you live in Colorado, or just want to learn some interesting and fun trivia about this wonderful state, this little book is well worth the money! For example, the first restaurant in Denver, CO to receive the liquor license # 1 is still in business! Every state should have something like this! Hmmm maybe Jerome Pohlen would like to take on this little endeavor? LOL

This book is incredible! I have both the Colorado and Illinois ODDBALL books, and they are hilarious. I had no idea the amount of odd stuff that could be in one state. This is a great travel book! And makes a great gift!

The best travel guide - period!

We recently moved to Colorado and purchased about a dozen travel guides to help us get oriented. Oddball Colorado was one we just sort of grabbed in the melee. My wife and I would burst out in spontaneous laughter as we read it. Rather than read it cover to cover, I found myself bouncing around from page to page. Just when I thought I had finished it I would discover another golden nugget I had overlooked. It was a sad day when I realized I had finally finished it!

Now all other travel guides seem inconsequential. Pohlen identifies the natural wonders that really matter (to me!). The cheesy roadside attractions that seemed to capture my father's big station wagon with their tractor beams. Reading the book is like taking a ride with my dad all over again.

Now I've moved onto Oddball Illinois. And I thought nothing could make me want to visit Illinois!

Great intimate narrative of life in western Colorado & Utah

David Lavender is a historian whose personal account of growing up in Telluride and Ouray, Colorado is captivating. Mr Lavender documents the arrival of the 1950's "modern age" to western Colorado and Utah. During his youth, the open desert and mountain lands evolve from a setting for silver mines, lone cowboys, and vast cattle ranches into the garden of the atomic age. He documents the arrival of uranium prospectors, the departure of independent cowboy spirits, and finally, the eventual return of the nuclear boom towns to dust. It is fascinating to read him today and to see what the southern Utah desert was like 50 years ago. If you visit these areas, I recommend that you read "One Man's West" as you pass through them. It will give significance to the sight of decaying farm or mining equipment by the roadside, and fill you with appreciation for those who make an effort to preserve the wilderness. I buy this book in multiple copies and give them to my friends. It has no particular bent for environmentalism or even "wise use" in the wilderness, but gives you some historical insight. I have never met Mr. Lavender, but I admire him as an author and historian. He has authored several other books incouding and account of the Lewis and Clark expedition which, I have heard, is quite good."One Man's West" was written in the 1940's then updated in the 1950's. The New York Times published a glowing review of the book in the mid 1940's or 1950's. Its age has only helped to enhance its significance to a contemporary reader of western history.

I agree with you review...

Mr. Lavender recently died (April '03)and his obituary in the Los Angeles Times prompted me to go out and buy this book. I could not put it down...just as the Times stated, Lavender is a wonderful writer who knows how to describe the west. This book has it all, mountains, mining, cowboys and history with a nice personal touch. I would recommend it highly. It is an "easy" read and one that will leave you feeling satisfied once you complete the book. I am going to search out more of Mr. Lavender's works.

This woman's life is an example for us all about how to fulfill our dreams through hard work and determination. She let nothing stand in the way of what she wanted, and she had major obstacles to overcome. Every young person -- and adult -- will be inspired by Clara Brown's simple, but incredible, life -- a life that I'm sure many a slave was forced to endure in this country.

This is the little known story of an extraordinarily brave and determined woman that influenced the lives of many people. Against all odds, Clara Brown bought her freedom out of slavery, successfully established herself in the west, and assisted other ex-slaves in the same difficult journey. The life of Clara Brown, told by Linda Lowery, proves to be an amazing story of heroism and compassion. I highly recommend sharing this story with your children, as it is beautifully written and historically important.

Inspirational and Excellent!

From Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks to George Washington Carver and Harriet Tubman, there are scores of African-Americans who were and are genuinely heroes. However, after reading this tale, I can't think of a single individual who possessed the drive, determination and sheer guts of Clara Brown. Lowery has uncovered a slice of both American and African-American history that's exciting and inspirational. My young daughter loved this book, as did I, and the author's fluid writing style really keeps the tale tantalizing and emotionally moving. Black or white, young or old, I highly recommend this book. Though largely unknown today, Clara Brown's life story is one that really should be told, and Lowery's book is an excellent introduction to this amazing woman.

I needed hiking information for the San Juan mountains of Colorado and picked this book, partly because it was authored by a local. The first time I used it, I was about 4 miles into a particular hike and came across two people and a dog along the trail. It was the author, his wife and his dog, Angie. They were checking the trail for any necessary changes in the Guide. Have used the guide for many of his hikes and found it accurate on difficulty and points of interest and presented in a very readable style.

As the various reviews point out this book is a blaze of color. Excellently photographed and excellently printed this volume gives a good impression of how beautiful petrified wood can be. This work is perfectly suited as a coffee table book.

As a wood anatomist I cannot help feeling that an even more beautiful book could be produced by shifting the focus to anatomy: when magnified these woods would look even better. I guess a palaeobotanist would agree with me that this would make for, from a scientific point of view, a more usable and valuable book.

Nevertheless this is a magnificent piece of work: there are some quite stunning pictures in here.

The best photographic presentation of petrified wood I have every seen. Frank Daniels' love of the subject can be seen in his work as laid out between the covers of this superb book. I totally enjoy showing non palaeontologically minded people this book when they visit. If a person is looking for a photographic presentation of petrified wood, then this would have to be the book. I heartily recommend it. Congratulations Frank on a terrific book.

Iy you are a layman, you will certainly ask whether "rock like " items like these can be so pretty. When you read on and understand that nature is actually the artist behind them, then you will start to appreciate that their brilliant color, the pretty pattern as well as the variety of what used to be living trees in this planet millions of years ago are not any less beautiful than the common gems and precious stones which we are much more familiar with. The excellent photos will certainly tempt one to read the book again and again . The only regret is perhaps the lack of more publications on these gems, despite a second and equally attractive book by the same author.

What a lovely book.... Milofsky's characters are human and whole. While the reader may not always like the way they behave we cannot deny how real they feel. I sobbed like a baby at the end. I knew what was coming, I just didn't know how and it was touching, sad, and beautiful. Please, support fiction not published by the major crank 'em out houses--buy and read this book.
