Morazan: Blood stain from yesterday.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-01
I met Leigh Binford in Dec 1994 during the burial of the 143 children and 2 adults that were sent back for the formal burial at El Mozote. Binfords analysis is more in depth than Danners dramatic book as far as cultural background and historical development of El Mozote and the state of Morazan in general. I currently am living in San salvador and right now they (Medicina Legal Forensics) are currently exhuming massacre remains near San Vicente.

Too bad the whole worlds attention is so Pavlov to the Medias bidding to current events while the past -and current- U.S. Involvement in El Salvador is swept under the rug and hid behind low intensity conflict style blaming. "Oh its their fault" Yeah, we trained them, and knew it was going on all the time. Right NOW we are VERY involved in COLOMBIA, and everybody is just sitting and browsing the net with starbucks coffee., Lets get off our duffs and find out what's going on. "Oh, but wait.. I have to see if My plastic Horses have sold on Ebay." Good work LEIGH!

I have read the manuscript for this book and I am very impressed with the author's imagery, imagination and exquisite use of the short descriptive phrase. I truly believe he is one of the greatest modern poets writing today. In a world of bland conformity and imitation, his poetry is refreshingly original and unlike anyone else's. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Elena Poniatowska: An Intimate Biography is an amazing window into the life and work of socially conscious writer Elena Poniatowska, a descendant of the last king of Poland, whose voice is best known in Mexico but deserves to be known everywhere else. Written by Poniatowska's friend of fifteen years Michael K. Schuessler, Elena Poniatowska: An Intimate Biography draws upon numerous interviews to reveal a multiplicity of perspectives - from fellow writers, literary critics, her nanny, her mother, and herself - upon Poniatowska's remarkable life and works. 40 black-and-white photographs, an annotated bibliography of Poniatowska's writings including those translated into English and those yet to be translated, and an index round out this "must-have" companion to any college library or literature shelf featuring Poniatowska's work.

I love the old west and its history, rich in exiting events, but so much of what has been published or filmed is filled with myth or misrepresentation. Therefore, I was pleased to find a book on one of the most exciting periods of the old west with details that ensure accuracy and honesty. Stagecoaching has been presented before, but never so completely as in the Encyclopedia of Stagecoach Robbery in Arizona. There are some stories included which have little to say about the event, except to record that a robbery occurred, but the completeness of the other stories shows that these few must have been all the documentation the author could find. For the first time I have a clear picture of stagecoach robbery in the old west, at least in Arizona, and I hope other books on this subject in other states will follow.

Strongly recommended as a core contribution

Evolving within the Exchequer Department during the Middle Ages for the purpose of settling legal disputes over the royal revenue, the High Court of Exchequer also began to hear common law disputes between private parties when relevant to the collection of those royal revenues. In the mid-seventeenth century the court extended its jurisdiction to all common law and equity cases. Painstakingly compiled, deftly edited, and superbly presented by William Hamilton Bryson, "Equity Cases In The Court Of Exchequer, 1660-1714" is an compilation of succinct descriptions of the cases brought before the court for adjudication. An impressive 724-page work of seminal and meticulous scholarship, "Equity Cases In The Court Of Exchequer, 1660-1714" is strongly recommended as a core contribution to academic library Medieval Studies, Judicial History Studies, and British History Studies reference collections.

A collection of titillating erotic stories from medieval German literature
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-03
In counterpart to the late-medieval Italian tale "Decameron" and the late-medieval English work "Canterbury Tales", Erotic Tales of Medieval Germany offers a collection of titillating erotic stories from medieval German literature, many by anonymous authors. Flawlessly translated into English by Albrecht Classen, Erotic Tales of Medieval Germany covers a wide range of sexually charged subjects, including marriage, violence, adultery, and human sexuality. Each story features a brief, scholarly introduction; a final, lengthy poem in its original German "Der Enttauschte Liebhaber" rounds out this close examination of historic expressions of passion.

Beautiful photography, vibrant colors
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-07
This is a fabulous coffee table book makes a great gift for any nature lover. David Muench does a wonderful job of capturing the desert & bringing home for you to enjoy. It is in stunning full-color on glossy stock.

Photographs encompass landscapes of endless sands & rocks of many different hues. Impressive natural sandstone sculptures are also displayed. You even get a glimpse of the petroglyphs & ruins of ancient peoples.

I fell in love with a spectacular waterfall flowing into most gorgeous turquoise waters I have ever seen. Meadows of golden prickly pear cactus flowers & fields of brilliant orange poppies took my breath away.

The text includes many fascinating facts about America's deserts. There is also a great map of the region. Captions including quotations from Van Dyke's "The Desert" fit the photography perfectly.
