I read Dharmananda's book on Professional Training Book on Chinese Herbology. He really makes the information easy to follow, so I am sure this book is great. Just do a search on ITM and his name and you will find his website where you can purchase the Pearls from the Golden Cabinet Book for its normal price! [...]

A must-have compendium of classical formulas.
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1999-02-05
Despite the rough biding and slightly quirky format, this book is beautifully endowed with the most important classical formulae used in clinical practice. A solid discussion of representative formulae from each therapeutic category including very important formula modifications. Also provided with each formula are western disease indications according to what has been supported by modern research. This book excellently illustrates basic introductory information on tongue and pulse diagnosis, the 6 stages and (zang) organ pathologies. In all, it's a scholarly work worthy of "must-have" status.

The Next Generation of EVM

Excellent book. PBEV is definitely an evolution of Earned Value Management. It is the first Book I have found that integrates Project Quality, Cost, and Schedule control all in one method. Solomon and Young were very successful in describing the weaknesses of EVM and pointing out the best solutions on the PBEV.

OBS: It is an advanced book for EVM experienced people. I wouldn't suggest you to try to understand PBEV without any knowledge on EVM.

Whatever is measured is improved.

Paul Solomon and Ralph Young have hit the "Best Practices" ball out of the park with Performance Based Earned Value (PBEV). PBEV integrates the best of standards based Project Management, Earned Value Management, and Requirements Management standards into a single well illustrated end-to-end guide for product development teams to follow.

Everyone knows that poor requirements are the single largest source of product rework and project failure. There are plenty of books on requirements analysis, definition, and management, but the problem persists. This is because most books do not weave the requirements process into other project management activities and use a meaningful technique to measure progress toward success.

PBEV fills the gap and shows you step-by-step how a high-maturity development organization starts with requirements, creates Technical Performance Measurements (TPMs), and uses the TPMs to monitor and control product development activities right to project completion. Anyone who believes the old adage: "whatever is measured is improved," will find this book to be the key to truly integrating processes and improving development performance.

If you look at the information notated in the table of contents alone, you can see why I say this. The breadth of the financial planning topics covered is simply fantastic.

If you are already in the field or are working towards attaining your CFP, there is alot of information to try to retain to be an efficient advisor to your clients. This book will assist you in your endeavor to retain this knowledge and give you one place to find same.

I have had fellow CFP students that are already in related professions comment to me they have used this book on a few occassions with in weeks of getting it. I believe actual use is the best recommendation a book like this can get. This is why I am getting another copy of this book to give as a present, to a friend who is an agent for a major Illinois insurance company.

I have also had the good fortune to meet the lead author, Sid Mittra, in person and was impressed with his true personal passion and interest in assembling experts in areas to supplement his own knowledge to bring us the best book on Practicing Financial Planning he could.

Keeps getting better!

If you are looking for a complete and easy to use "bible" for the financial planner or are a student of financial planning this book is probably my favorite. It is COMPLETE. I used this book years ago as an instructor and found that I kept it as a reference to use in my practice.
I recently received the latest edition as a gift to replace my shopworn copy and find to it to be up to date, easy to use and still the first book I grab when I need to reference something that I have forgotten over the years or simply don't know.
I appreciate the depth of this book and recommend it to my fellow planners as the best book to own for good, quick answers or to students who really want to know the subject matter in a complete way.
Before you order keep in mind this isn't a quick read, it's a BIG book and full of information.

This book is certainly one of the best books about REBT for therapists. Walen et al. do a great job to explain the basic concepts of REBT and how to get them across to clients.
They deal with difficult situations and how to solve them. Their systematic step-by-step approach of doing REBT consists of:
- Getting at the A's
- Getting at the C's
- Getting at the B's (a crucial point in therapy)
- Disputation: general and specific strategies
- Homework assignments
- The course of therapy

Numerous case examples illustrate the authors' points.
This book is a great reference book!

Possibly THE best overview of REBT for therapists.

While Ellis is the originator of REBT, he may or may not be the best author on the subject. Walen, Dryden and DiGiusseppe provide the underlying philosophy, the nuts-and-bolts, a boatload of techniques, and special applications of the therapy. I use REBT in practice, and this is the text to which I refer most often. If you are a therapist considering learning more about REBT and how to use it in practice, this is the book for you.

It is not a book to learn Ifa. You have to be a awo or babalawo to use it. You will find a lot of pray to be use in rituals, all in yoruba and with english translation. It is not easy because most of texts are very long, but as the title says it is for practitioners. Well if you know of you want go in.

Adupe Chief FAMA (Aina Adewale-Somadhi) She has been a becon of light for both Babalawo's and Iyanifa's with her many works. This one being just as it says: "FOR THE PROFFESSIONAL".
It's purpose is to offer enough information to those Awo's who may not have access to a local teacher of Ifa. At least you can work with confidence until you can hook up with the correct Oluwo-Ifa. Please be respectful of the Warnings! when it says it requires a person with the proper Ase. It MEANS an initiatated Priest who has gone through Itefa not an orisa priest or non initiate. Lots and lots of excellent material. May Iya continue her great contributions. Ogbo ato. Ifa agbe e.

This is the best book on this topic I have seen. As the owner of a mid-sized company, I run into violence, threat and harassment situations almost weekly. The book is intelligent, has useful case studies, and concise guidelines on how to develop and implement policy. The author knows his stuff and has a humane, reasonable approach to these tricky issues.

This is the book to buy

As a forensic psychologist who conducts threat assessments and fitness-for-duty evaluations of potentially violent employees, I found Dr. Braverman's book to be the most informative, readable, and practical text available. I recommend it highly to HR professionals, Occupational Health physicians and nurses, employment lawyers (don't be offended by some of Dr. Braverman's constructive criticism of too-conservative corporate counsel!), Employee Assistance professionals, union officials, security officers, anyone who worries about a co-worker's potential for violence, and anyone who has been accused of threatening violence on the job. If more employers took Dr. Braverman's advice, workplace homicides and other forms of violence (e.g., assualts, harassment, hostile work environment, threats, intimidation) would decrease, employee stress would diminish, and worker productivity would improve.

As the title states, this is "A Practitioner's Handbook" and an extremely useful one for the practicing School Psychologist or anyone involved with or interested in furthering their knowledge of School and Clinical Neuropsychology.

Likely one of the best School Neuropsychology resources to surface, I particularly found the Case Studies as well as the practical approach to disorders typically found in the schools (written language, reading, ADHD) useful in my own practice. The chapter entitled Linking Assessment to Intervention is tantamount to today's changing dynamic in the field and gives School Psychologists interested in Neuropsychology a solid conceptualization of appropriate service delivery in which the psychologist can intervene to assess as opposed to simply running everyday psychoeducational reports with figures nobody understands. The authors guide the practitioner to use effective pre-referral intervention programs to offset the tremendous amount of referrals seen in the schools today.

This is a well-researched and thorough handbook that has accomplished all the important groundwork to help guide School Neuropsychology into the future. I highly recommended it as a useful reference for any researchers and clinicians working with children and adolescents.

Easy read for families and teachers. He discusses using requesting skills to replace instances of severe behavior. He explains in detail how to get a child to mand for breaks rather than engage in disruptive behavior. However, a person can design a plan to replace the break requests with whatever the child needs to match the behavior function they are seeking (e.g. attention, tangibles, etc.).

Dr. Durand presents an easily understood, yet technically tight, presentation of functional communication training. Dr. Durand provides an excellent demonstration of the applied analysis of behavior and provides a framework for understanding that behavior. This book should be read by anyone and everyone who works with individuals with communiction difficulties who are engaging in troubling behavior.

This book on social skills training is useful not only for schizophrenics but also for other clients whose treatment includes the need to use role play to teach various skills. I purchased it for use in a new Dual Dx program at our agency but immediately saw its use for training staff to do more role play in our CBT-based substance abuse tx program for all clients.

Collected gems from body of knowledge
Helpful Votes: 32 out of 32 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-02
This collection of papers on software change impact analysis covers both practice and theory. The book starts with an introduction to change impact analysis. This intro covers terms, theories and practices that have emerged and are accepted among most researchers and practitioners, and provides a basic discussion of traceability and impact analysis.

Chapter 1 is titled Nature of Impact Analysis and contains A Process Model for Software Maintenance, Impact Analysis-Towards A Framework for Comparison, and The Year 2000 Problem: Impact, Strategies, and Tools. Although the last paper is obviously out of date, some of the techniques are worth examining, especially since a good amount of the Y2K problem required impact and risk analysis.

State of the Practice is the topic of chapter 2, and contains the following papers: An Analysis of the Requirements Traceability Problem, Software Change Impact Analysis for Design Evolution and Configuration Management Survey. These three papers are a combination of practice and theory.

The material in Chapter 3, Automated Support for Impact Analysis, is spotty. Some is out of date in my opinion, while other papers are as fresh today as when the book was published. Papers in this chapter are: The Integrated CASE Manifesto, A Practical Software Maintenance Environment, Intelligent Assistance for Software Development and Maintenance and Maintenance Support for Object-Oriented Programs (the last is excellent!). Chapter 4 contains the most practical material in the collection. The topic title is Dependency-Analysis Approaches, and the papers are: Using Dependence Analysis to Support the Software Maintenance Process, Interprocedural Slicing Using Dependence Graphs, Data Dependency Graphs for Ada Programs, Data Flow Analysis and its Application to Software Maintenance and Change Impact Identification in Object Oriented Software Maintenance.

Papers in Chapter 5 (Traceability Approaches) are also mostly practical, but many are out of date or contain information that was a good idea at the time, but seem quaint by today's standards. Paper topics are: A Hypertext System to Manage Software Life-Cycle Documents (very much ahead of its time, but woefully out of date now), A Software Documentation Support Environment-Its Definition, Traceability Based on Design Decisions (this is *must reading* in my opinion) and A Process for Consolidating and Reusing Design Knowledge. Chapter 6's papers address Impact Representation. While many were written a decade ago all of them are interesting and include ideas that are as valid today. Topics are: The Prism Model of Changes, A Unified Interprocedural Program Representation for a Maintenance Environment, A Formal Model of Program Dependencies and Its Implications for Software Testing, Debugging, and Maintenance and A Graph Model for Software Evolution.

Chapter 7 is devoted to Impact-Determination Techniques and contains interesting papers that are more theoretical than practical in my opinion. Topics are: An Early Impact Analysis Technique for Software Maintenance, Using Program Slicing in Software Maintenance, Efficient Algorithms for the Instantiated Transitive Closure Queries, and Approximate Reasoning About the Semantic Effects of Program Changes. Chapter 8 is a synopsis of material in the preceding chapters, with and commentary and observations about impact analysis as a discipline.

Overall, this book represents a substantial cross section of the body of knowledge devoted to software change impact analysis. Some strengths include the fact that this collection of papers makes the body of knowledge available in one book, and the focus of the papers on software engineering aspects of change and maintenance, and how to manage impact to complex applications. A key weakness is that some of the papers are over 10 years old. However, despite the age of some of the papers many are surprisingly applicable to maintenance challenges faced by practitioners today.
