Ethnography at its best!!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-12
This is a truly outstanding work. Hardly anyone did the kind of fieldwork Auyero did, hardly anyone illuminates the way in which the poor in Argentina manage to solve their everyday survival problems and, in the process, become subordinated in a powerful domination network. I would recommend this book not only to those interested in Latin American politics but also to those who want to know what a theoretically-inspired ethnography looks like.

Pathbreaking!!

Where should we shelve this book? Does it matter? Should it be in LAtin American Studies? Should it be in sociology? The people that auyero portraits with the skill of s craftman could not be Argentinean. They could be in every day New York at the kitchen soups, they could have lived in the old days of italian immigration. Rather that concentrating in names and places the aim of this book is to find the ways in which every day people make sense of their lifes while being in a situation of opression; to find the ways in which there could be resistance inside acts catalogues as domination and at the same time maintain the idea of domination intact. This book os a must for every person interested in Argentina, for every person interested in LAtin America, for every people ineterested in the sociological analysis of everyday life and political domination. Integrating theory and empiria, this book is a readable one, even though it doesn't run away from theory. As a grad student and an adjunct teacher myself, I think it could be a great undergrad and grad textbook.

Carlos Nino, the leading Latin-American public philosopher of the century, was also a statesman and a brave patriot. This book reflects his experience, personal contribution and analysis in relation to the unprecedented policy of truth and justice of former argentine President Alfonsin.

It's a great study about genocidy and justice

Carlos Nino, who passed away in 1993 is one of the authors who studied more the subject of how to trial the people who commited the most horrible violations of human rights. It's undeniable the best in the subject.

I was first introduced to this book through a children's literature class years ago. It later became one of my daughter's favorite books. The pictures are well done and eye-catching. I'd highly recommend the book either as part of a classroom library or as part of a home children's library.

I especially like that the story is just a matter-of-fact story that happens to be in Puerto Rico. It's a good multicultural story that isn't focused on any any perspective, it's just telling a story. Highly recommended!

A New Argentine Mother
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-01
This is an academic look at the organization of middle-aged Argentine mothers that began in the wake of widespread political and state sponsored terrorism in the period of 1976-1982, more commonly called the Dirty War. It began as a network of mothers who met while trying in vain to search for their children who had been `disappeared' by the government and grew into an internationally recognized and admired group committed to changing the structure of the Argentine political system from the bottom up. This book focuses on the journey of these women from traditional housewives, many with no formal education, confined to the private sphere of home and family, to a highly politicized, ever present and very out spoken activist organization. They have taken the traditional role of `mother' and used it to their advantage to bring to light the atrocities committed by the military junta against their children. As the title suggests, their organization has revolutionized the concept of motherhood by taking the concerns and duties of mothers out of the private sphere into the public and even international political arena. This book is an interesting documentation of the group and includes interviews with many members as well as commentary from many Argentine and international publications about the Mothers. It discusses their activities from the group's conception during the Dirty War through the transition to democracy as well as their continuing struggle in Argentine political life today. The book also documents the enormous obstacles they faced and continue to face economically, socially, and within their own families as well as their political struggles. It also talks about their interaction and reception in the international sphere, as they captured the attention of human rights and women's organizations from all over the world. It even discusses the ideological split among the Mothers after the return to democracy in 1982 that caused some Mothers to break away from the original group to form another group of Mothers with slightly different ideologies. One of the most interesting aspects of this book is the focus on the development of the women themselves. A great deal of time is devoted to the transformation that has taken place among these women as they came together to find solace in each other that only someone experiencing the purgatory of not knowing the fate of their children could offer. It documents the courage, dedication, successes and disappointments of a group of women who came together to help each other look for answers. It is detailed documentation of a very personal and painful journey of political awakening through collective struggle and pain. It is one of the most valuable and moving aspects of this book. By focusing on this personal transformation, one begins to understand the almost incomprehensible corruption and brutality of the government. For these women, protesting meant standing in the face all traditional social, religious and cultural roles for women, especially middle-aged women. By the end of the book, one can't help but share in their frustrations and pain as they continue to fight for the integrity of the family and the supreme sanctity of human life. It is ironic that it was precisely because they were quintessential Argentine mothers that they became political activists that began to transform the concept of motherhood and the role of women in Argentine society. The abduction of their children was not only a painful, emotional loss, but also a direct assault on the institution of the family. It is interesting to note that throughout the book they emphasize their occupation, as a mother, has remained intact. However, the activities involved with being a mother have changed. To them, now to be a mother also meant fighting for the rights of their children, left voiceless by the government and carrying on their children's work and memory in their absence. This book is an excellent source of information about the Mothers themselves as well as about the atmosphere of Argentina as a whole during this time. It has many pictures of the mothers from the past and present and mixes academic fact easily with first person accounts, quotes and interview. It equally discusses successes and mistakes of the group, as well as various controversies that have surrounded the group's history. It's content and style make it an emotional and informative book.

I was directed to read this for a class. I had no idea that it would cause me to change my way of thinking. We all know that the atrocities of disappearances exist, and we might even place a bit of distance between ourselves and the subjects of this book so we can feel better about our own place in life. However, getting close to this subject brings an awareness and sense that something needs to be done, not donation of money, or thinking about it every now and then, (although these actions help) but everyday we need to be doing something. What the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo did was revolutionary. What they did, and how they went about organizing, spreading the word and surviving as they did in the roles that they were as mothers unfamiliar with is astounding. We can learn alot from the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo. I hope that everyone who has been politically disheartened or disenfranchised reads this book! I believe the other review on this book may have articulated the response to it more thoroughly; nonetheless, I hope to get across that this is a must-read for those interested in social justice issues, activism and more.

I'm so glad to have this book in my library. As a Spanish teacher (and future mother who wants to raise her children bilingually), I feel it best to expose my students to authentic material whenever possible to raise multicultural awareness. Also, it's very interesting to see a story you are familiar with told from the perspective of another culture. The animals specifically mentioned in the story are native to Peru which adds to the enchantment. To add to the value, indigenous words and names (in quechua?) are used and there is a short informative page at the back with information about Perú and llamas.

I have had the opportunity to use this book in my classroom to not only to introduce my students to an Incan legend, but also to challenge them to find other such legends, including Noah's Ark, that tell the story of the Earth's great flood. The illustrations are colorful and the text is simple, but very much keeping in a legend and storytelling mode. This can be the beginning for great discussions. For reading at home, the same applications would work. This is a very nice way to teach children about diversity and similarities through authentic and ancient myths.

From its inception in the barrios of Argentina, the Tango has proven one of the most enduringly popular dances in the world. "Tango Voices: Songs From The Soul Of Buenos Aires & Beyond" is a remarkable and memorable compendium of celebrated tangos from around the world. Knowledgeably compiled and deftly edited by Donald Cohen, the music is arranged for voice and guitar with each individual pieces being informatively annotated and fully illustrated with complete translations from their languages of origin into English. "Tango Voices" also includes a CD featuring performances by original artists of twenty-six tangos. A superbly organized and presented showcase of the tango, "Tango Voices" is highly recommended for personal, professional, academic, and community library Music & Dance reference collections.

Well, maybe a perfect dance partner is better...

This publication is a Gem! So much information packed between it's covers.. and on top of all that.. a CD with all the wonderful pieces described in the book.

Donald Cohen, the multi-talented man who compiled and edited this book, fullfilled exactly what he intended.. "This book was written primarily for those who know little about Tango, and for those who know much about the dance, but little about the music or songs to which it is performed".

I've had this book only 2 weeks,, and I'm on the third reading..and have listened to the 26 pieces of music at least 5 times..

An easily read, insightful book about Argentine tango which is a cult favorite amongst tango dancers. Of all my books on tango, this is my favorite, and becomes the favorite of most of my friends in the tango community once they get their hands on it. Part guide book, part instructional manual, the authors shine when they relate their stories of the very human and touching nature of this dance, particularly from their personal perspective. I highly recommend this book to those just curious about the subject, as well as to tangueros around the world who will laugh and cry with the authors as they relate their stories of the temptation to tango!

I red many books of tango, because I m so curious & wanna be good dancer.
I quite enjoyed this book.
At 1st look, it could be just "general" guide for Argentine Tango dancing, but this book could give you much deeper infomations. The writer is advanced level's "tango maniaque" dancers who have some years experiece.
It's like David tuner of "a passion for Tango". Seems they did good research and interview to prepare this book. I found much humour & deep psychological thought inside. All story they are telling is so "REAL". I apreciated so much.
The last part of this book, they have many practical infomations to participate in tango festival and trip to Buenos Aires. Specially I you live in North west coast of USA, it ll help you much.
