Great fiction, meticulous historic research

I have read all six books of Maurice Druon's ACCURSED KINGS in Hungarian, since I am from Hungary. I literally could not put it down. Druon's writing style is superb, character development is exquisite, and the story is so engaging with its intrigue, plot-twists and passions that you would not know that you are reading real history. And you are: although the book is fiction, his research of history is extremely accurate and the book is richly annotated. Even supporting characters you think are invented are based on real historic figures. He not only conveys the story as an incredibly exciting adventure, but depicts the life of the era so effortlessly you don't even notice you learn about medieval life.

The books are about the events leading upto the hundred years war between France and England in the mid 14th century. The strong king Philip IV (Philip the Fair) leaves his strong country to his three sons, all of whom die without a male offspring, thus leaving the country in a turmoil for the succession. As the events unfold, you learn how a queen's adultery leads to the female line's exclusion of the succession and ultimately to the hundred years war. The story is complete with a Pope's forced election, a queen's murder, another queen's murdering her husband, a king being poisoned, an infant king being switched with another baby, and much, much more...

Its a shame its out of print. If you can get your hands on a full set of all books, not just this one, by all means, get it!

An unparalleled accomplishment. Nina Barragan combines abundant research with an artistic panache ... producing a thorough and vivid narrative of the relocation of Russian Jews to Argentina at the turn of the century. This is a remarkable, powerful story, historical fiction at it's best. Told primarily through the diary of Rifke Schulman, a fictional yet deceptively `authentic' immigrant, the story unfolds leaving an imprint of this heroic woman's life forever in our memories. A beautifully crafted book.

Urgent and Poignant

Review Date: 2001-04-03
The format is striking and gripping in itself. An imaginary journal of a remarkable, strong willed, independent woman is interspersed with short stories. The stories are poignant, contemporary portraits of Americans, each of whom has some tenuous link to the journal. The grandeur of this vision and the urgency of the details, make it difficult for the reader to put the book down. In the journal, the dramatic politics and cultural events of the early twentieth century come alive through unforgetable characters from the white slave trade to the striking unions. In the short stories we frequently come to know wonderful, engaging personalities who share a common reality: there are some things they just don't get. An unforgetable book!

Mujercitas really made me wonder about the opportunity we all have to live a life full of joy. Made me also wonder how come most of us do not apprecite and value this opportunity given. With this book I have decided that I will, even if others don't, that's up to them. In addition, made me think about the family I once had and with a little more forgiveness, It could return to me. Read the book, if you are into the sentimental type, but if you are Stone-Cold don't waste your time!!!.

FRIENDSHIP HAS NO DISTANCE

Review Date: 2006-08-09
A friend of mine gave me this book as a present many years ago and I believe it is wonderful. It was my first Bach's book and I think it is my favorite (followed by "Illusions") from his collection. No doubts that I love Bach's writings!!!

This is a very short, kind, and sweet story, written on beautiful color paintings. It surely might represent an enormous impact on anybody's life, as it did on mine.

Little Rae celebrates her fifth birthday and has invited her friend Richard, who is thousand of kilometers away, to her birhtday party. Richard, who is unable to physically get to the party, sends his wishes using "imaginary trips" of several birds in order "to be with Rae" and show her the meaning of friendship.

Bach demonstrates that physical distance cannot separate us from our real friends and/or the people we love, because if we really want to be with them... we are!!!

This is a perfect book to tell a friend how much we care about him/her.

A great read! In this masterfully woven novel, Johnny Payne brings his engaging protagonist into 3-dimensional life in a variety of settings that I found surprisingly fascinating, including the worlds of boxing and horse racing. We encounter rich diversity of characters here as well, including an ex-wife who is writing a novel as we read, using the life of the protagonist as her subject. The plot of North of Patagonia is satisfyingly complex, and the reading is easy. I couldn't put the book down.

Making Argentina real

A captivating story at many levels. One comes away with a breathless sense of hard work, the pampas, and the added complexities of dealing with a handicapped child in a very foreign country forty years ago. And underlying other themes is a fascination and puzzlement - sometimes fear - of the superstition and mystery of a place that is rural Argentina. If you're interested in travel and history and life, read it.

Visiting a foreign place can never match the depths of understanding that come from living there. And beautiful, mysterious Argentina forty years ago was certainly foreign to most Brits and Americans. But the author's personal experiences in a superstitious, fearful and harshly different set of cultural circumstances, find voices in the complex set of characters who live through seasons, earning a living by cooperating with and competing with nature and bureaucracies at all levels. Another story line of family courage and sadness of raising a physically impaired child in this environment weaves together with the land and the mysteries to make for a gripping and informative tale - well told.
