The Best Years are Yet to Come!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-09
Dr. Cynthia Barnett has written a must-read guide for anyone retired or close to retirement. The title "Prime Time Makeover" makes vividly clear that retirement is the prime time of a person's life, and Barnett wants to help you make sure it is absolutely the best time. Dr. Barnett dissembles any fears or concerns about retirement by providing guidance, information, and a great deal of enthusiasm to encourage you in making your retirement years enjoyable and fulfilling.

"Prime Time Makeover" is more than just another book about how to plan financially for retirement. The book offers several resources from a financial perspective, but just as importantly, it discusses how to plan your time during retirement so once you retire you are not bored or left feeling you were only valuable when you were working. Barnett dispels the fear of boredom that suddenly having thirty years of future free time might bring by showing how retirement can be a meaningful experience. She stresses the importance of beginning to plan before you retire so you know how you want to spend your retirement years. No reason exists for boredom during retirement. The prime time years are ones for positive change, growth, and self-fulfillment.

Dr. Barnett realizes every retired person will not fit into the same category of retirement. She discusses the variety of choices for retired people, from deciding to remain in the workforce part-time, moving to a new area--whether it's a retirement community or closer to family members, taking up a new hobby, or pursuing a dream that had previously been shelved because of work or family commitments. "Prime Time Makeover" is full of unique and helpful suggestions for how retired people can get the most out of their retirement years. The chapter on work alone is filled with resources, websites to visit for further information, and names of companies that look for older employees. Retirees can find new careers, start their own businesses, or volunteer with a meaningful organization. The possibilities are endless. In addition to the section on work, there are sections on finance, health and exercise, spending leisure time, and spending time with family and friends. Throughout, Barnett motivates the reader to have the best possible experience in each of these areas.

One of the most valuable resources in "Prime Time Makeover" is the collection of special worksheets to help readers think about their retirement possibilities. Barnett provides a "What If Imagination Page" for readers to write down activities they have always wanted to do and then to envision what the results could be if they pursued those dreams. The reader is asked to stop thinking about himself as a retired person or a former lawyer, secretary, or electrician, and instead to think of himself in a new way--as a painter, a writer, a golf enthusiast. The imagination sheets aid you in visualizing and expanding in your mind on all the possibilities that exist for retired people. As Barnett repeatedly states, your retirement does not have to be that of your grandparents' generation of growing old in a rocking chair. These special worksheets are actually useful to anyone at any age, so they can serve as a life-coaching tool as well as a retirement planner.

Most importantly, Barnett gets the reader excited about retirement. I doubt anyone could think about retirement the same way after reading "Prime Time Makeover." No one will to want to envision retirement as just knitting or reading a book, unless those are the activities they sincerely want to do. Barnett also warns the reader not simply to become a babysitting service for grandchildren, but to balance being parents and grandparents with exploring themselves and their new identities. Today's senior citizens are living longer, healthier, and more active lives than past generations, and "Prime Time Makeover" proves this with a wonderful collection of photographs where healthy, smiling retired people are actively living their lives and enjoying every minute.

While I am many years from retirement, this book made me put my reasons for working in a new perspective and to consider how I spend my present time and how it will affect my retirement. Because the book is full of great advice about working, health, and simply how to enjoy life, it can be read and enjoyed by adults of any age.

Every person about to retire should read this book. Children should buy it for their parents, and companies should include it as a parting gift to their retirees. Even if you are young and just starting out in your career, reading this book will be of immense value to you as you consider the greater purpose of your job, not just to pay today's bills but to provide financial security for your future so your prime time years will be fulfilling. "Prime Time Makeover" will truly help you make the rest of your life, the best of your life!

I've been studying for a "psychology of aging" exam, & used Dr.Belsky's book to help with my studying: it proved to be of great help, especially because the whole book is written in a narrative, conversational way, which helps the reader. All the major developments in aging are contained in the book: historical, basic information on gerontology & geropsychology, lots of "life-span approach" information, & all that is needed to understand how the (relatively new) field of gerontology came to expand & become a field that is now growing at a quick pace.

There's also a lot of up-to-date information, all the new findings & ideas in the field, which help to see how gerontology has started to change the aging process: lots of these changes are described in the book, things like new ways of measuring cognitive skills, the emotional changes in the older population, & the dying process & how to help make it more humane. Needless to say, this textbook contains many "aging in process" vignettes, which graphically describe real problems & real situations of real people...there are also many figures & graphs, which help the student understand the research & put it in context. All in all, a very helpful textbook.

Recently, I've been very impressed with this exceptionally witty, intelligent and user-friendly book.

At a point in my own life where the cumulative effects of work-related stress, not to mention a life-long love affair with good food, have begun to show up in the state of my health, I've been primed for any credible knowledge and insight into effective countermeasures.

I started regular workouts after a hiatus of several years...that has helped a lot. Golf season returned, which is always a blessing, if you like playing in monsoon rains. Then an old and close friend, Bob Nadler, recommended I take a look at this book, of which he happens to be co-author along with a couple of experts in the fields of nutrition and life extension.

I've found a scientifically grounded "one-stop-shop" manual of useful, real-world information and guidance on the comprehensive subjects of nutrition, exercise, life extension, supplements, sexuality, immunity, and of course, the various "flavors" of stress and their effects on aging. Every aspect of the subject is mined in the book, underscored by its pervasive impact on our health and sense of well being.

Moreover, it's written in a crisp, engaging style, making a complex body of well-researched (there's an extensive bibliography) and extremely relevant facts and recommendations entertaining and easy to assimilate. The structure of the book allows you to find almost any topic with ease. The style and humor comes from Bob's unique talent as a writer.

I'm not usually in book recommendation mode, but this is a special case. I think a person of any age, let alone those of us approaching the shady side of 60, can find enormous value in this informative, absorbing read...I already have, and I urge you to consider it for yourself and the ones you love.

Frank Covino at 70 + years can out-run, out-ski and out-lift most men a third his age. Dr. Anderson probably could also, although I have not met him as I have Mr. Covino (I'm one of his art students). While I would, as he also does in this book, recommend ALL people see a physician before beginning any excercise/nutrition/supplement program, there is much food for thought here. He details many vitamins, minerals etc. and their effects on health and longevity and also provides an excellent weight loss and fitness program. However, the most important part of the book is in the last chapters where he writes of "Your Self and Its Role in Society" and the importance of psychological balance in both health and what he calls "active longevity". Many health-longevity books overlook this important factor.

My only concern is that some of the supplement dosages are higher than I would personally risk.

By following his diet program I lost nearly twenty pounds in two months and in four months had developed much more upper body strength with his excercises than I had previously from years using weight machines.

Review Date: 1999-01-06
Growing old is an adventure with challenge to be enjoyed if one has a healthy body and mind. To attain life style that offers the way to living a pleasant, functional life, Dr. Borgeas offers a variety of recipes and practices that extend to multi-ethnic customs and foods. It, therefore, is more than a cookbook. The readable print, easy going style of the text, interspersed with lively anecdotes and medical wisdom make this book entertaining and useful.

The subjects include care of the body using natural and practical ways of dealing with relaxation, exercises that strengthen and improve vitality and discussion of herbs, spices and flavorings that enhance the taste and texture of food. The multi-ethnic recipes are introduced with descriptions of origins and uses that emphasize their health giving attributes. There are also described alternative ways of living and thinking that may become healthy life style. Positive, practical suggestions are included. The book, basically, is a guide for eating and living a full, healthy life.
