A fine guide for re-writing the story of elder health care.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1998-10-17
Peake is commended for openly and honestly addressing the current condition of health care for the aged. " Healthy Aging, Healthy Treatment " is an excellent addition to the library of those who provide health care services to the aged. Troughout this text Peake presents a non-treatening yet effective means by which to address the primary goal of psychotherapy; re-writing core beliefs. The current story of health care for the "third age" is repleat with frightening images as well as themes of ignorance, denial, neglect and fear. Perhaps we can use Peake's final chapter as an outline by which to re-write this mystery into a story that more accurately reflects our innate care, concern and compassion for one another.

Bedside Book for Boomers....
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-25
If you, or a friend, are turning 40 - or 50 - this is the book to get for yourself, and/or to give as a gift. Along with the black crepe, the Over the Hill balloons and cards, this book is a baby boomer must have.

Most of the books I review are open for lending to family or friends - this book is an exception. It sits on my bedside table when it isn't accompanying me on trips that allow me to do a lot of reading. This chunky book offers me comfort and information as I move along in life.

In a Chapter called, "Making Changes That Last!" you'll find these words from the authors:

"One of the downers in midlife is recognizing that we are no longer protected by the invincibility of youth. One of its joys is recognizing that we now have the wisdom and experience we need to take control of our health and make choices that matter.

"The chapters that follow are filled with lots of sensible and practical suggestions based on the latest research. We would like to tell you that there is a new miracle drug to prevent cancer or reverse aging. That just isn't the case...Alas the road to good health in midlife remains largely dependent on three key ideas: a positive approach, moderation, and consistency."

You can pick this book up, choose any any chapter and find information, short stories of other Baby Boomers' experiences, short charts, and explanations. It begins with a small chapter on the Midlife Journey, and closes with a short chapter called Body, Mind and Soul.

In between, there are separate chapters on specific female and male issues (prostate cancer; male menopause; female menopause; breast cancer), as well as shared concerns. Memory loss, heart care, intimate relationships, the search for the Fountain of Youth, Healthy Eating, Exercise and much more are covered.

Best of all, at the end of every chapter is a reference list with more books to read, organizations, websites to visit and a cross-reference to other chapters in this book.

The thick paperback edition has an attractive cover, quite suitable as a gift. And if someone doesn't give it to you as a gift, do yourself a favor-- get yourself a copy!

This is an important book on an increasingly important subject. Its essays are not of uniform value, but there is here much information and much real thought. The wisdom involved in the later years of life especially in a culture which so celebrates youth must be based both on traditional Jewish sources and an awareness of the often strange challenges modern technological developments present to us.

A Totally Useful Book
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-07
I wish that Horticultural Therapy and the Older Adult Population, which was edited by Suzanne Wells, I wish this book would sell better.
There is a real need for the material in this book to be widely dispersed, read and used. For people working with older folks the information here centers on the practical. It is well-researched, well thought out, nicely edited.
I am a garden writer myself (Allergy-Free Gardening) and one of the things I've written was a book produced by the National Council of State Garden Clubs, called "Horticultural Therapy/ A Guide for all Seasons." That book, edited by Martha DeHart and Joan Brown, covers much therapy ground. However, for using hort. therapy with the elderly, this book here is the best reference.
I have seen some amazingly good things happen from hort. therapy. Working with plants and gardens makes life better, makes people feel more human, more alive. Recently I heard a talk given by the man in charge of the new hospital addition at Loma Linda University Medical Center. They are planning to spend millions to set up far greater access for their patients and the gardens. They have the data to show that it not only saves and enriches lives, it also saves money---lower medical costs.
I recommend Horticultural Therapy and the Older Adult Population
highly. A very good book.
