The best way one can prevent themselves from becoming a burden on their families as they age is making sure the money they saved for their retirement stays saved for retirement and is only used for that purpose. "Alive and Kicking: Legal Advice... for Boomers!" grants legal advice so you can keep your money so when you finally do go and kick that bucket, your family has something other than massive debts to remember you by. Tips on Living wills, scams and identity theft, caring for your own parents in your own advanced age, issues involving age discrimination, driving, sex, and more are covered. While treating itself as a law book first, "Alive and Kicking: Legal Advice... for Boomers!" isn't afraid to crack a joke or bust out a poem now and again, giving a different and attractive flavor, making it highly recommended for anyone who is rapidly approaching retirement age and wants to be prepared for it in the modern world. Also recommended to community library law shelves.

Vast amount of useful information

What I liked about the book is the vast amount of useful information on all areas of planning for ones over age 50 years. And its a book that my son who is under age forty, found interesting, because it discusses issues that many people may never have thought about. It also is a book that dispells the notion that becoming sixty or older, means getting 'old' and unable to do many of the things we love doing in our forties or fifties. Cannot recommend the book enough.

Who would have thought that serious and important legal and financial matters could not be dished out with generous helpings of humor? This book clearly proves that theory wrong. An easy read, the authors never skip a beat when it comes to thoroughly discussing what readers need to know about boomer legal matters. I've recommended this book on many occasions.

...Invictus is by William E. Henley......I do not like much poetry.....but 'Still I Rise', is one of the most moving and powerful pieces of literature of our day. You can feel the rumblings of motivation rising within you as you read it---it summons the power of our ancestors as you read it... YOU FEEL this poem with all your heart--or I fear you have no heart and you remember that feeling for years after you have read it!
It is a magnificent poem that the author not only wrote, but earned through her own life.
This book would make excellent Christmas gifts of inspiration.

In "Midlife Mamas on the Moon," Sunny Hersh presents pertinent topics for women over 40. The sooner you read this book the better your life will be. Since I just turned 40 I found this book to be a helpful guide to a life I will soon be living. Instead of being shocked or annoyed by symptoms of aging, I can be prepared and aware of subtle changes.

Sunny Hersh shares her personal experiences and gives advice on a wealth of topics including relationship issues, sexuality, dating, financial security, hormone replacement, exercise and diet. She also gives helpful tips on looking after your partner's health.

Most of the book reads like a conversation with a close friend and I found myself writing down the names of numerous books and supplements. This book will bring you up to date on the most important lifestyle changes so you can ensure a smooth transition from 40 to 50 and beyond.

This is an excellent book for anyone in high school and above-its a classical novel that has depth and meaning unlike lots of books today....It's similar to the Notebook in a way; the book deals with a love that lasts through the ages rather than a fling. It's an emotional book that does moves slow; however, everyone in my high school loved it.

While in The States last summer, I visited a bookstore and came across the 'Pearls of the Stone Man'. I read the first page and couldn't put it down. Edward Mooney's moving novel reveals the power of love in family life.
Joseph and Anne, in their seventies, don't have the passion of young lovers but share the deeper love and intimacy that comes from sharing their lives for half a century. 'The Pearls of the Stone Man' is a heavenly guide to understanding the basics for a better, richer life.
Family bonds are as strong and meaningful as love is. Stones will turn into pearls if one can find the truth of life. I look forward to a translation of 'The Pearls of the Stone Man' for the German market. I'm sure it will be a big hit here.
Mooney is a masterful storyteller, and I eagerly await his next book 'The Journey of the Stone Man'.

In the prologue to "The Pearls of the Stone Man" a young couple, Shannon and Tim, are driving up to Pine Mountain on a Saturday in spring with their two kids in a mini-van. Once again, Shannon wants to stop and see the old house, still trying to solve the mystery of an old man's final words: "Remember the stone." The old man they called grandpa was not related to either of them by blood, but that is the point of this novel by Edward Mooney, Jr.

At the heart of this delicate little novel is the marriage of Joseph and Anne Marino. After 53 years of marriage these two still love each other and live in a small house at the base of Pine Mountain. But even before they find out that there are only months left to their love affair instead of years, Joseph has been aware that they are running out of time and has become preoccupied with thoughts of things undone. For thirty years he has been talking about climbing the mountain that he talks to every day, but that is just one of a long list of things he has not done. In fact, there is a list on his closet door that he made of things that he wanted to do. But Anne challenges him to name two projects that he has actually finished and Joseph is consumed with the idea he has so many unfinished pieces of business and all the regrets that he is carrying.

Then, everything changes because time is running out and the most important thing in Joseph's world becomes trying to reconcile with his estranged son and finishing the stone wall that Anne asked for years ago. Seeing Joseph pulling his wagon full of stones for Anne's wall earns him the nickname of the "Stone Man." The pearls in the title belong to Anne, although obviously there is a metaphorical meaning to world as well, as a much younger Shannon and Tim learn.

That is because while the love between Joey and Annie has not changed over a half-century lots of other things have, such as the way children are raised. Shannon and Tim are but two of the troubled teenagers living on Pine Mountain, where the sight of an old man pulling a wagon full of stones is something that inspires words of ridicule and acts of cruelty. But whereas Joseph responds to these insults and injuries with anger over the impotence of an old man, it is Annie who suggests a better way of dealing with the escalating problem.

"The Pearls of the Stone Man" is about a love that transcends death and that is there today and always. It is also a tale about responsibility that makes the case for how in a relationship each person has 100% responsibility for that relationship, in contrast to the erroneous assumption you only have 50% of the responsibility (it is 100% responsibility because it is a total responsibility for the relationship). Mooney creates a beautiful portrait of such a relationship and when we finally learn the meaning of the old man's words it is a simple and profound message. You should have come to all of these conclusions through reading the novel, but just in case anyone misses the point Mooney provides an eloquent benediction.

It turns out that "The Pearls of the Stone Man" is the first of a trilogy, the second volume of which, "The Journey of the Stone Man," will be published next month (September 2004). This will be an interesting trilogy in that the story will be apparently working its way backwards through time. The second book takes place a quarter-century earlier as Joseph and his teenage son, Paul, take a cross-country trip in a "Woody" station wagon. Given what we know about the troubled relationship between father and son from this first novel, it will be interesting to see what Mooney weaves with his next narrative.

Well, my Grams and Grandpa's anniversery was coming up so I thought a rose bouquet, a card, and a chicken soup book would be perfect. I looked for a chicken soup book that would be for 60+ people and I found this! It's just great. But one thing thats not true: Anyone can read this and enjoy it! I am just a kid and I liked it. My grandparents definetly liked it. I recommend this book for everybody!

It was delightful, insightful, and unbelievably encouraging to me.

A book that helps you understand your life

Review Date: 2008-01-07
The author is a man who has lived life into his latter 50's and has experienced much. He understands life and uses spiritual wisdom from years of studying GOD's word, examining himself by its teachings, and applying its wisdom to his own life. What results is a book that opened my heart and showed me what 'mid-life crisis' really is; a 'crisis of the heart'. It's about interpreting my world, life, and heart in view of the truth, not my feelings or perceptions; but GOD's truth. It is a book that is, at times, painful to read because it forces you to face your real problem (yourself), but is written with wit, humour, in a conversational one-on-one at the cafe tone, and above all, IT PRESENTS A LOT OF HOPE AND ENCOURAGEMENT! A must read for the Christian in particular, or anyone who is seeking to understand their inner person in the midst of mid-life struggles of the heart.

This book was excellent. It was just what I needed to read at this time. It is helpful to know when other people have had the same thoughts and feelings as you are having or have had and didn't fully understand them. I would highly recommend this book to anyone middle aged or older whose kids have moved on and are retired and not sure what to do now. I see now that there are a lot of people that are experiencing these same things.
There are also a lot of good examples of how others have handled hard times and turned them into something positive by trusting in the Bible, God's Word to us.

This is probably the most practical Christian "self-help" book I've read. It brings to focus things that long-term Christians know, but don't dwell on. If you are a believer, after reading this book your focus on life will be altered. I would recommend it for anyone. Not just those of us who are ( or were ) lost in the middle.

Paul David Tripp's book starts by describing three main triggers of mid-life malaise - mortality, regret, and broken dreams - and then walks through practical and biblically-based strategies for understanding, healing, hope, and renewal. He shares some unique insights, such as the purpose and misuse of our God-given abilities of imagination, and society's failure to define the various stages that constitute what we oversimplify as "adulthood". Although the book is long-winded, Tripp is a lively and eloquent writer, and uses thematic analogies and the stories of several individuals to illustrate his points and hold the reader's attention. I also appreciate his careful avoidance of overusing scriptual texts; when he does turn to scripture, the passage is directly appropriate and fully developed. On the whole, the book is well-suited to the person lost in their own mid-life situation, is chock-full of insights, inspiration, and practical recommendations, and is an excellent traveling companion for the journey to significance and meaning in the "second half" of life.

This is a fast reading book concerning Mrs. Charles Lindbergh's last few years of life. Written by youngest Lindbergh sibling, Reeve, she tells of living on her own farm in Vermont, with a smaller house on the property her mother lived in during that time. Reeve Lindbergh is a wonderful writer - she doesn't need the famous last name to prove that. When she isn't writing about her mother, which is riveting for some reason, her writing of anything else in the book has such a fresh, emotional spirit behind her words. Anne Morrow Lindbergh, a legend in her own time both in flying, her husband, and her many published works, did not talk much in her last years. It is a story of how the family felt and coped with her condition, letting go of the vibrant mother they once knew. An excellent book for those who have been a caregiver to a parent or sibling. Anne M.L. was such a famous figure, it was both interesting and heartwrenching to have the privilege of reading about her day to day living. Thank you, Reeve Lindbergh, for sharing this story that you could have kept to yourself, but chose to share. It's a book that will be remembered long after it's read.

Reeve surely has Ann's gene for writing. This book should be read by all who still have parents alive and will be faced with their eventual death and by those who have already lost a loved one. Alzheimers and dimentia are a death before dying. It is hardest on those left behind and gilt and worry are only some of the emotions one has to deal with during the dying process. Reeve caught the essence of her mother and was fortunate to be able to have 24/7 caregivers to help her through this ordeal.
This book is a tribute to Ann and to Reeve's Sister.

I have read Reeve Lindbergh's work before in her memoir, "Under A Wing". I was surprised at her candor regarding her father, and what was equally clear was her fondness for her mother. "No More Words", which records the last 17 trying and rewarding months of her mother's life, is a tender tribute that is notable for what it includes and for what it omits.

The only photograph of Mrs. Lindbergh is the one that appears on the cover. The photograph depicts a young woman at the start of what would prove to be a life as fascinating as it was lengthy. The closing months of this woman's life are chronicled above all else with a great deal of respect. This is a most private family event, and just as the book is devoid of any pictures for the voyeur, the narrative too is informative without taking away any of the dignity of her mother. This would seem to be an obvious manner to write of one's parent, but a person does not have to look far to find books written with sales as the first goal, and exploitation of the subject left unconsidered.

Reeve Lindbergh is a poet, she is reflective, and these aspects of her personality provide a narrative that is unique. This book is not simply a diary; it is not a chronological description of the systematic health decline of her mother. It is more of a story that is driven by the limited interactions she was able to have with her mother, and the memories that were either hers or recollections of her mother's life. This is not a sugarcoated story of what was a very trying time. The book is a balanced memoir about how difficult it is to deal with not only the death of a parent, but also the very real difficulties and frustrations that caring for an elderly, ill parent involves. Mrs. Lindbergh had the best care available which took much of the moment-to-moment care off of the family. It did not remove many of the difficulties, and the reader can easily imagine what it would entail to care for a parent with little, or no outside help.

This is a very contemplative book that moves at an associated pace.

Reeve Lindberg has succeeded in giving us a marvelous journey through the last two years of her mother's life. It is also a very helpful description of what it is to deal with someone who is deep in the fog of an Alzheimer's like state. I plan to give copies to many of my friends, most especially those with elderly parents. Reeve's language is lovely and crisp in the strokes of its portraits. It is easy to see she that is her mother's daughter. I am so happy to have discovered this book and I would recommend it to anyone who is seeing or will see an elderly parent or friend through his or her last days and months. Tasha Halpert

This is a touching memoir of the time when Reeve Lindbergh was helping to take care of her aging mother, the famous Anne Morrow Lindbergh in the last year(s) of her life. This book is a look inside the private lives of a very well known family during a difficult transition in their lives.

The story is about how Reeve is trying to make sense of this time. It contains her thoughts and reflections and fears about the change in her mother's condition. I appreciate the honesty in which this book is written, I feel like the author held nothing back in relating her story. I was surprised and delighted at the openness of it. She wrote about things in dealing with this situation that people think, but would rarely admit to.

I found this book to be very comforting, as I recently experienced a similar situation in my own family. There were so many times, as I read this, I was shaking my head thinking....I know exactly what you're saying. Throughout the ordeal, there are sad times, but there were also light and funny times as well. Dealing with the aging and decline of a loved one that you have known so well all of your life is difficult. They change, and when it happens, we don't always know how to deal with it or what to think, and we wonder what they are thinking. It's hard and it's confusing when you are trying to guess at what is going on in their world. Reeve writes beautifully about it all.

I had not picked this book with the intention of experiencing what I did...the comfort of reading about someone else going through a similar situation as me. I initially picked this book because I love Anne Morrow Lindbergh's book 'Gift of the Sea' and I wanted to read more about her life. Once again, as I am a firm believer of...the right books come along at just the precise moment that we need them and so often they come in an unexpected way as this one did for me.

First we want to grow up; then, we want to look younger! Positively Ageless gives advice on how to take care of ourselves inside and out. I've met Cheryl Forberg and she is a perfect example of practicing what she preaches. This book touches upon every aspect of maintaining health and the recipes are doable and delicious. That's what I want to be --'positively ageless'. Thanks.

For those of us wanting to keep our bodies healthy and as "ageless" as we can, this book is a hit! The easy to understand examples (like the oxidizing apple...) are great, and the no-nonsense research is fascinating and well-written. And the recipes are terrific too -- so far, of the 4 I've tried, all are yummy! Great book...

Finally! A book by someone who's knowledgeable about the subject of antiaging nutrition. I saw her on television and she really knows her stuff.
I've read a few popular antiaging books and I liked Positively Ageless better because it is written from the perspective of a nutritionist who is also a professional chef. She makes the subject easy and logical to understand. Her recipes sound and taste great. I even made two of them myself so far which is a first for me.

Wonderful, Insightful Book!

I felt like a new person after following Dr. Cheryl's nutritional advice. I lost weight, but more importantly, I looked great! Everyone commented on how much I glowed after a few weeks of following the plan.

Since when has information about aging been so much fun to read? This fast paced book is chock full of useful information, the questions it answers hit the spot and most of the time you'll have a smile on your face when you're reading as well. (When you can remember where you've put the book down). It reminded me of the film in which Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson become "older" lovers and at one point mistakenly wear each other's glasses. Except that here, the author is firmly in control! I'm going to buy a copy for all my friends...

ESSENTIAL YET ENTERTAINING

With my 50th birthday looming large later this year I've been stockpiling books about dealing with aging parents and my own aging. None of these have been pleasure reads...until Ms. Padwa's book came along! Thanks to Lynette Padwa I'm a bit less fearful, and a lot more prepared to face mid-life armed with humor and essential information. And now I know what I'll be getting all my friends for their 50th birthday! Midlife need not be a crisis anymore and it's gals like Ms. Padwa who'll spread that message for all to hear! Thank-you!

Lives up to the title

As an avid reader its rare that a book that lands on my desk actually lives up to the title. This one does. The author literally covers hundreds of topics in a factual as well as a witty way, which makes the book a joy to read and one of those rare books one doesn't want to put down.

The authors writes about prostates, penis', what men/women really look for in a partner, finances, scents that men/women like most, face lifts, what's better coffee or wine, fitness, baldness (most women don't care), viagra, mind and stress, why do bones creak, medical tests over age 50, digestion, wills, life insurance, medicare, elderly parents and money concerns, job changes, retirement communities, cohousing, sex and dating and much much more.

An excellent reference book if you're <50 or >50

When I read the table of contents of this gem of a how-to book and found that I kept flipping to page 50 for the topics I wanted, I knew I really could benefit from Lynette Padwa's advice -- as I had from her other wonderful books. I actually thought I could skim a lot Quick, Answer Me because, smarty-panties that I am, I've been 50 for some #*@$ years and have been studying and paying attention along the way. But I must have taken a lot of vacation days. If this book were a test, I'd have to go back to being 30. (I wish.) I highly recommend this book for readers on both sides of the 50. Thank you, Lynette, for giving us the answers AND the questions about what's happened before and why, what will happen next and why, and what is happening to our friends and spouses and significants and why. Thanks for making me laugh out loud about subjects that could make most future geezers cry. Thanks for making the publisher use a decent-sized typeface. You thought of everything!

Lynette Padwa's "...Everything You Need To Know About Turning 50" is the literary equivalent of a Woody Allen movie--smart, fast-paced, and omigod, is it funny. She takes on all the important issues concerning life, love, sex and aging, and still leaves us laughing. Don't miss this nugget.

I loved Olivia Wu's "Turning 50:Fifty Personal Celebrations." It helped me a lot when I turned the corner myself a year or so ago. It strikes just the right balance between joy, courage, and faith on one hand and plain honesty about life's challenges on the other.

The baby boomers are turning 50 en masse. This book shows that the boomers still have lofty aspiration and haven't lost their idealism at 50. It is a wonderful celebration of ordinary folks with extraordinary zest for life and social responsibility.

Good for any birthday.

This is a delightful, well-written book which draws together a wide variety of experiences of turning fifty. But it goes beyond that to look at ways in which people affirm themselves and those around them at any point in their lives. An uplifting, inspiring read, with lots to think about.

The stories of actual people (interesting, creative people!) are so compelling when one reaches this scary milestone, only to discover that we are still young at 50, and there is a lot of wonderful stuff ahead. Inspirational, positive, a perfect gift.

I bought the book at the recommendation of a friend and have not been able to keep it in my study. When I tell others of it they ask to borrow my copy.Perhaps I do the author a dis-service by loaning it, but the content is such that I naturally want t to share it.

I loved the book for lots of reasons. It is small enough to carry easily. It is inspiring and sensitively written. The photos personalized it even more.I knew the people more intimatley. I am disappointed that "Turning Fifty" is not readily available at my favorite bookstore. Were that the case, I know that some of the people I have loaned it to would have bought it On the other hand, it can be read in a couple of hours, so it can be easily passed on to friends. The problem with that is that after reading it the firsttime through, the reader wants to return to his/her favorite individuals represented in the book.
