This unique book combines psychological self-testing to better know oneself, (ones needs, interests, dislikes, what one is good at, & less good at,) with a personal strategic planning process resulting in a personalized & updateable action plan to fully live the 50% of ones life ahead that one may have in today's world if we're in the 60 yr old range.
Absolutely great for baby-boomers who believe in themselves & taking charge of their own future!

Retirement Your Way gives a lot of great, practical advice. More importantly, the Birkman quizzes are fun and a good reminder that it is important to know yourself first before following retirement advice.

To look upon this extraordinary work as a "how-to" book about retirement is to miss the point. Once the reader gets into it just a little way, it becomes apparent that Your Retirement, Your Way, is a tool, potentially immensely useful, for giving thoughtful consideration to the "third chapter in our lives", and then building a personalized `Master Plan'. The plan is comprehensive, in that it includes not only the financial side of things, but also the psychological preparatory work that makes the transition to "retirement" a rewarding experience. In short, this book not only makes you think, but also engages you in a rich, complex and in-depth process which goes far beyond what professional financial advisers will tackle.

The authors recognize that financial planning is only a part of retirement planning. The genius of the book is that it integrates the financial side of things with the personal, psychological issues that merit--but seldom receive--acknowledgement and attention. The reader performs exercises that reveal his or her individual personality profile. This leads to careful consideration of life goals, and the preparation of a meaningful "New Life One-Year Action Plan."

There is an explicit recognition that one's retirement plan is going to involve costs quite different from those that are a part of pre-retirement life. Every aspect of financial planning is covered in clear English. As with the psychological side, the financial parts of the book can easily be understood by anyone.

I mentioned that Your Retirement, Your Way, is `potentially' immensely useful. That's because the reader really must follow through with the exercises that are essential to the process. If you are looking for a quick read to get some facts about retirement and its challenges, this is not your book. If you want a trusted adviser who will help you develop your own, personal approach to retirement over a few weeks, then get the book, and get to work!

Successful Retirement Depends on More Than Money

Review Date: 2007-12-10
It seems to me--and I admit the possibility that I may be wrong--that when I retired back around the turn of the century (1999, to be exact), retirement planning books were mostly about money. Yes, financial planning is very important, but it always seemed to me that by the time you reach retirement, you've done it or you haven't. I'd planned in my own conservative way, so I never read those books.

Today, thanks to the self-help book craze, the scope and number of retirement guides seem to have expanded. I'm not a fan of self-help books in general, and I've been retired quite a while, but I still decided to take a look at one of the retirement guides for the new age.

Your Retirement, Your Way, by Alan Bernstein and John Trauth, is subtitled, "Why it takes more than money to live your dream." In thirteen chapters, including "Preparing Psychologically for Change," "Creating Your NewLife Master Plan Summary," and "Determining How You Want to Be Remembered," Bernstein and Trauth cover many of the retirement concerns I've faced, and they provide common-sense guides for coming to terms with these issues.

The authors of this book invite you to create a "personal, customized NewLife Master Plan . . . through a structured process that will give you the power to take your future life into your own hands and create the best possible retirement lifestyle unique to your own interests, personality, relationships, and situation." A lofty goal, indeed!

I especially like Bernstein's "Who Were You? Who Are You? Who Can You Become?" chapter because the author suggests writing down things such as "What I was doing when I was at my best," "Situations in which I've been at my worst," and many more. I promote the same strategy in a less structured way in my own book, Seniorwriting: A Brief Guide for Seniors who Want to Write (Infinity, 2007). "Writing to Discover," as I call it, is a great idea! I'm glad to see it included here.

I was also happy to be introduced to the "Birkman personality profile" (copyright Birkman International, Inc.), a somewhat complex but very interesting strategy used by some psychotherapists "to better understand people negotiating complex transitions."

I tried the included "Birkman Interest and Style Summary" to discover my interest and lifestyle colors: Red (Implementer), Green (Communicator), Yellow (Administrator) or Blue (Planner). My result was blue all the way. That means I like to plan activities, deal with abstraction, think of new approaches, innovate, and work with ideas. It also means that I appear perceptive, agreeable, conscientious, reflective, and creative.

Blue means that my interests include abstracting, theorizing, designing, writing, and originating, and that my fields include writing a book, joining a spiritual commuinity, teaching, and volunteering. My style is insightful, relective, selectively sociable, creative, thoughful, emotional, imaginative, and sensitive, and my preferred environment is cutting edge, informallly paced, organized in private offices, low key, and future oriented. With the exception of "joining a spiritual community," these terms fit me perfectly. If I had not pretty much done so already in my own way, I could have gone on with goals, strategies, objectives, and specific activities and tasks to create my NewLife Chart.

There's much more in this book, including one chapter on financial planning, but the emphasis is on self-anaylsis, facing reality, and planning ahead. This book fulfills its stated purpose to "help you recognize and draw on resources that you may never have recognized . . . to create a truly fulfilling life, custom-designed for you and you alone."

I heartily recommend Your Retirement, Your Way to anyone nearing or even beginning to think about retirement. It's a big step; don't take it unprepared.

Wonderful book full of specific "to do's"

This is a wonderful book, full of good explanations of how the brain ages, as well as many specific mental exercises to use for mental gymnastics. These specific exercises really set this book apart from the many that give generalities like "don't watch too much TV," "do things that are mentally stimulating," "learn new things," etc.

The book is clearly written and easy to follow. I plan to give it as gifts to some of my older clients and keep it as a reference for myself.

5 years ago my Dad was 90 and very mentally sharp. He had surgery and was placed into an assisted living facility to recuperate and has never left. He violated nearly all of the advice in this book and now just 5 years later he is completely senile and does not know any of his children or grandchildren. I wish I had had this book to give to him 5 years ago!

This book contains everything you need to know in order to deal with the many challenges of aging. The closest we'll get to the fountain of youth is to age as smartly as we can. Dr. Vines teaches us to do just that - weaving wisdom with exercises geared to enhancing your physical and mental fitness. Can we really slow down aging and be more vital and happy as we grow older? Dr. Vines makes a convincing case for that argument. I believe her. I've started the exercises. They're fun and challenging. This gem of a book is not just for the baby boomers. I concur heartily with the author's statement, "It's never too late to start, nor too soon to begin."

I used to assume that losing my senses would be inevitable as I aged. Thank-you Dr. Vines for putting my mind at ease! This book offers encouragement in two forms. It dispels the myth that dementia and aging go together and gives practical exercises to stay sharp throughout life.

The mental exercises are fun! I can tell the difference. They help my brain stay active, keep the synapses connected and my memory in shape.

I will be buying several copies for Christmas gifts this year and will make Age Smart's Mental Fitness Workouts my New Year's Resolution!

Where Have All the Workers Gone?
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-06
Workers these days are like snow shovels in a South Carolina blizzard - not enough to go around. Some of the causes are simple statistics: economy up, unemployment down, working-age population falling, employers' demand outstripping supply. But others are cultural. Large corporations, the traditional source of jobs, are often perceived as uncaring engines of depletion, exhaustion, and downsizing. The young are choosing options, from lifestyle to stock, while workplace veterans opt for the dignity of early retirement over the desolation of forced termination. Employers' alternatives are stark: expand their supply, increase their appeal, or prepare for shortfalls and belt-tightening. Recruitment, retention, recession - remorse.

Were companies to examine their own assumptions on hiring and firing, they would find a pervasive and self-destructive premise: old is bad. But as Beverly Goldberg argues in _Age Works_, employers - indeed, society as a whole - have built this premise on an ill-considered, ill-defined congeries of prejudices and presuppositions. Believe it or not, Americans age 55 and above take fewer sick days, adapt to new technologies successfully, and are more loyal to their employer than are their colleagues thirty years younger. And perhaps more importantly, they may be the only untapped workforce available. As hidebound organizations throw fortunes at untested youth, others more far-seeing (including Travelers, GTE, and Baxter Health Care) actively recruit, train, and depend upon senior workers. In a shrinking labor market, corporations and their HR departments may find a surprising competitive advantage in coaxing older employees away from the brink of an often sterile and impoverished retirement.

Eager to dismiss this challenge to their standard practices, naysayers and doomsayers will demand proof. Fortunately _Age Works_ reads more like a position paper than a business book, and like any good position paper, it's loaded with facts. Age Works is the ideal volume for anyone itching for a statistical analysis of the American workforce 1950-2050, in all its hues and strata. Arguably Goldberg's love of statistics verges on addiction, but in the pharmacy of authorial dependence, statistics are a pretty benign habit. More distracting, although again less than fatal, is the book's policy-wonk style. Goldberg stands foursquare in the school of tell-`em-what-you're-going-to-tell-`em, tell-`em-, tell-`em-what-you-told-`em, and _Age Works_ sometimes reads like an executive summary that cannot bear to end.

Nonetheless, _Age Works_ is a cogent, serious, undeniably well-supported piece. Even those who resist the proposed solutions (admittedly the book's weakest section) will find the diagnosis difficult to dispute. Like it or not, America's workforce will continue to grow smaller and grayer over the next twenty years. And by the time the population bounces back, corporations' hiring practices will have appealed to all ages - or to none.

Graying Means Payoff

Review Date: 2000-03-03
For a decade we've heard a steady chorus of despair about the graying of America--that graying means paying, in the words of one leading credit. Beverly Goldberg, in this carefully researched, tightly argued, fluidly written, and ultimately extremely important book, shows us a different path. She demonstrates that older Americans are a potential boon to the economy and to the bottom line of forward thinking companies. She shows that they are a group that brings considerable experience and great stability to those that will make use of their talents. And she supplies a roadmap for how we can get there--as indivuals, as companies, and as a society. A great read and a great contribution to the growing body of literature about navigating what may well be the great demographic transition in our country's history, the aging of America.

Since the idea of totally retiring is not something that appeals to me, I found the suggestions for building different kinds of flexible work arrangements very thought-provoking. The numbers in the first couple of chapters will help build a compelling case for allowing those who want such arrangements to have them. I also found the stories of those who wanted out fascinating-they are an indictment of companies for the ways they handled downsizing and mergers. It clearly is time for all businesses to rethink their dealings with the people who work for them and to reconsider the value of older workers.

If managers think they have problems attracting and retaining human capital in today's economy, they haven't seen anything yet. Get set for the massive wave of retirements over the next ten (10) years. Beverly Goldberg conveys a compelling picture of why managers need to learn the value of recognizing, retraining, and retaining older workers. Age Works is a wakeup call to those caught up in the wastefulness of our "throw away" society. Older workers are a precious resource that can ill afford to be squandered. Ms. Goldberg demonstrates a better path and presents concrete ways for managers to benefit from the graying of America.

This is a great book. I notice I'm not forgetting things as readily as I did. I can now tell you my safe deposit box number, my drivers license number, my car plates, and various phone numbers. It's also helped me to remember people's names. Great buy. Other programs want hundred(s) of bucks to improve your memory and prevent altzimer's. This does the same thing.

I have many of Harry's books, and love him! He is such a sincere person and gives his all to us the reader.
Naturally if you have ordered this book, you are in a situation that you may be feeling concerned that your mind is feeling fuzzy, or that you want to keep your brain young and vibrant. You will not be dissapointed in this book at all.
I especially liked how positive the books overall feeling is. That our brains shouldn't be deteriorating and actually should be sharper than ever. I have tried the techniques in the book, and as long as I apply them, I have noticed an improvement! I now know my Bible books forwards, and backwards. Have memorized several scriptures, and am partially thru the Sermon on The Mount.
Our brains are wonderfully made, and we should take care of it. So go ahead, whatever you decide to memorize, it will help you in middle age and beyond. Thanks Harry for the encouragment and help to sharpen up!

The 69 Steps
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-04
In the field of Wellness Dr. Don Ardell is recognized nationally and internationally as its "Dean." Don has an original and very healthy attitude towards aging (which at 69 this national and international age-group triathlon champion has experienced himself). The REAL in the title stands for Reason, Exuberance, And Liberty. How broad is his approach? Well, he tells us that: achieving wellness is always based on reason, science, and the ability to make rational choices; if wellness is not fun, it's not wellness; and liberty, which Don defines as "freedom and choice" is at the center of living the wellness lifestyle.

Don illustrates these principles by, for example, filling the book with intelligent humor (OK, not all of it is intelligent), some his own and some borrowed from others. At the same time, the book is science-based and is well-stocked with both data and references. The text is aimed at helping people to become folks who are "AUI," that is "aging under the influence" of leading a healthy and well lifestyle. The goal is to, as you age, maintain the best possible health, the highest available energy levels, the greatest obtainable degree of physical mobility, and the fullest mental capacity. None of these are to be measured on any absolute scale, but should for each person reflect the reality of their life and their particular genetic and educational endowments or lack thereof.

To help you do this, Don has assembled his "69 Tips." Why 69? Well, Don was 69 when he wrote the book. I suppose that is as good a reason as any. Among them are: "Nutrition [is] the heart of the matter;" "Just say no [to medicalization];" "Take Charge [of the wellness process];" "Understand Longevity;" "Stay centered and balanced;" "Exercise [your] critical faculties;" "[Practice achieving] serenity;" "Sex is wonderful;" "Humor is powerful stuff;" "[Think about] The Meaning of Life [for yourself]." A most useful Wellness prescription for all of us.

Steven Jonas, MD, MPH, Professor of Preventive Medicine, School of Medicine, Stony Brook University, co-editor of the textbook, "Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in Clinical Practice" (2nd ed., Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins, 2007).

A Call To Living Well!

Aging Beyond Belief: 69 Tips for REAL Wellness is author Don Ardell's call to all of us, at any age, to look life in the eye, grin and really live it! We've all seen thousands of books that tell us to be well by doing this and doing that. Eat this, but not that. Exercise this way, not that way. What Don gets at is more the "how to be" not just the "what to do". With that kind of advice a person can live their own life, but do it in ways that will truly enhance their health and wellness.

What will keep this book within reach is not only the easy "pick it up and put it down" format of 69 tips, but the absolutely irrepressible zeal that Don has for living that shows through. A true "founding father" of the modern day wellness movement, Dr. Ardell has been at the forefront of helping us all to realize that lifestyle is the biggest determinant of our health. Don's approach to REAL Wellness, is just that...real, and, fortunately for us, it's fun too.

What's so special about this book is that the advice is good for everyone, regardless of age. If I'd had it as a guide to life in my teenage years, I would have been a much happier camper. Luckily, all of us "oldsters" have Don now, showing us the way to giggle at, think about, and approach our old world in new ways. Don and his book are great companions. Buy one for yourself and for any old codgers that could use a new spin. Maybe we can start a movement.

This delightful and informative romp takes the sting out of aging

This book is a delightful and an informative romp about an important subject. Dr. Ardell's ability to combine solid research on aging with personal reflection and humor takes the sting out of contemplating the health challenges ahead for each of us. I especially like the optimistic and proactive approach to wellness. Dr. Ardell explains how healthy eating, fitness, a positive attitude and good friends can enhance our quality of life throughout the aging process.

Dr. Ardell is a social critic and obviously is concerned about the lack of critical thinking and unhealthy practices that is becoming an American tragedy. He does not shove his views down our throats, but allows us to enjoy his perspective and invites us to form our own.

I've seen Don Ardell speak at conferences and I'm pleased to report that this book, like Don, inspires us to be all we can be. Reading Aging Beyond Belief is an opportunity to spend time with a delightful and knowledgeable wellness role model and guru.

I'm still a relative youngster (49) and I feel lucky to have Dr. Ardell's book in my library. I will be purchasing this book for family and friends. My hope is that they too, will age beyond belief.

Don't Miss it!

What happens when you get a lot of struggling writers to tell you of their life just after college? Drama, tears and lots of laughs.

The toughest challenge faced by most twentysomethings is that period just after college. The process of discovering you really are an adult even though you still feel like a teenager can be as awkward as puberty and even lonlier.

Add to this the fact that for some reason many college grads are absolutely convinced that they are the only ones going through this transition and that everyone else already has a great job, great prospects and a great spouse, or at least a solid relationship. Truth is, nearly everyone goes through at least some time in this purgatory - where this engaging book steps in.

Stories covering everything from first jobs from Hell to cubicle humor to apartment woes let you know that not only are you not alone but your problems may actually be a bit funnier than you thought.

The Editors of this book have done a wonderful job putting this project together and I look forward to more great work from them in the future.

This is a great book, and would have saved our marriage if we had read it in time! I finally understand what happened between my wife and myself, and it wasn't either of our faults. Too bad we didn't know this until after the painful divorce.
Hormones affect men just as much as women, and we were both ignorant of how important it is to know what your spouse is going through at midlife. Give this book to anyone in their middle years, and they will be forever greatful. Heck, they should read it before they even get to that stage of life.
It should be required reading for everyone as they get to their 30's, and beyond

I thoroughly enjoyed reading DOUBLE MENOPAUSE by Dr. Nancy Cetel. It was comforting to know that there is solid information about the next phase of life for me. Being prepared for some of the possible effects of changing hormone levels will only make the transition easier.
The book was well written and interesting. I especially appreciated the chapter entitled THE TRUTH ABOUT ANTI-AGING. I agree with Dr. Cetel's philosophy about the aging process and found her advice for maximizing longevity very helpful.

An excellent resource for women and men to assist in understanding the ebb and flow of hormonal change during midlife. The effect of such changes on both the psychological and physical domains are discussed. The time during which these hormonal changes occur can become extremely trying and tumultuous for individuals and their partners. This book addresses ways to assess the changes that are occurring and approaches to managing them. Double Menopause speaks well to a complex phenomena and simplifies it. This is a unique resource for men and women whose lives are affected, directly or indirectly, by menopausal or andropausal changes.

This is not only a very informative book, but an enjoyable read. Dr. Cetel is a great communicator. I knew a lot about perimenopausal symptoms but knew relatively little until now of the hormone-related changes a middle-aged husband would also be experiencing. Dr. Cetel gives clear, practical advice on what women and men can say and do that will ease and support the other's experience. Her "tips" for reconnecting with your partner and achieving greater intimacy in mid-life ("hormonal harmony") are quite actionable and fun (I've tried several already with good results.) I also liked her advice for an overall healthy lifestyle. This may be the one book on menopause your husband will want to read. I highly recommend it if you're committed to your marital relationship lasting and growing.

This book reinforced many things I've known, but needed to hear. It also pointed me to some great resources that I'd never known existed. I recommend it for everyone in a caregiving role, whether the active day-to-day caregiver or a caregiver who lives a worried distance away. It is written in short chapters or articles - easy to pick up in a spare moment.

Caregiving usually doesn't happen gradually. Families are often thrust into the situation because of a crisis, without any experience on how to manage the overwhelming stress, responsibilities, legalities, and medical aspects. Gary Barg has done an excellent job sorting it all out with 'The Fearless Caregiver', guiding the reader through the maze. Very easy to read, motivating, empowering, and highly recommended!

Gary was a welcomed guest on my Internet Radio Program, 'Coping with Caregiving' on wsRadio. Online archive available.

It is about time that someone tackled the issues that caregivers face. It can often be a lonely and confusing time. I was a caregiver for my mother a few years ago and looked everywhere for a book like this. I needed something to walk me through all of the things I didn't understand. This a well-crafted, easy to read and understand book that all caregivers should read. I wish it had been available five years ago! I recommend it highly.

I recently purchased this book by Gary Barg. It is a terrific source for all caregivers and has every aspect that needs to be addressed in it. It takes you through every part of caregiving, from how to take care of yourself to attending to legal matters promptly. There is a list of ideas to help make your patient safe in his/her surroundings. This is valuable tool for every caregiver. It is superbly written and easy to read. It has been placed in our Parkinson's Library for our members to read.

I couldn't give this book 5 stars because, although it looks like a great book in and of itself, it should be titled, "Fitness Over 65" since most of the quotes, stories and photos are of people well over the age of 50, and more like over 65. Keep in mind if you are 52, like me, that with very little current exercise you might be better physically fit and beyond the simple exercises in this book. It's VERY basic. But if you haven't done anything beyond sitting on your couch munching chips and watching the tube your whole life, this book would be a perfect way to break into beginning to get fit.

I admit, it's kinda scary looking at 70 year olds (even though they're in great shape!) demonstrating the exercises in a book for the over 50 crowd, but I also purchased a book called, "Strength Training Past 50" and although it's basic in it's own way (it demonstrates free weights, and if you're into going to a gym also machines), many of the photos in it are of people much closer to my own age, and that at least speaks to my comfort zone on working out and aging! It's also more of what I needed to start getting more fit.

A good point for the book is that it is wrtten in large and clear print ,for those old eyes. If you have been doing exercises on a regular basis, this book will not help ,as it is very basic. It would be good for those that have not been doing any exercise or have not done any exercise for a number of years. The chapter on "what should I eat " is brief and could use more information and a recommendation for further reading. Thanks for reading.

The information and exercises displayed in the book are very practical and easy to follow. They are safe for beginners and the photographs help to motivate the individual. However, a 51 year old person may be put off by the book as most of the people in the pictures look 70 or more years old. There are young 50 years olds out here...the book would be more appealing if a few younger faces were included. Thanks

This book is really well illustrated, and when you look at the ages of the people in the pics and the exercises that they are doing, it should shame you into getting your new yrs resolution started.

I've always wished that I had been born into this life with an owners manual. I've now found one in Frank and Karen Cuva's, FOREVER YOUNG, Your Personal Trainer.

I discovered weight training at age 63 when I finally decided to do something for the health of my bones. This book has been the perfect guide. The authors give step by step, easy to follow and clearly illustrated instructions on the correct path to weight lifting--without injury. And they don't stop there! With an engaging style they share their own personal stories of advancement in the arenas of bodybuilding and fitness (truly inspirational). They address issues of motivation, nutrition and age appropriate progression. Included in the book are enough workout charts to take you through an entire year without repeating a routine.

What comes through loud and clear in this book is that Frank and Karen Cuva really care about all of us folks stumbling our way toward fitness. Whether you work with a personal trainer full-time or you are your own personal trainer, this book is invaluable!

If you always want to be young, then this is the book you were looking for. Workout charts I received along with this book is really good and very easy to follow. This book is an incredible companion for the people doing weight training. Their instructions are clear cut, step by step, easy to follow and clearly illustrated instructions on the correct path to weight lifting--without injury.
I read the book and I thought, this doesn't sound too bad, but I found myself miserable. I just was frustrated after a week....it was very regimented. I did benefit by eliminating my coffee habit with the help of a wonderful coffee substitute called soyffee (www.s o y c o f f e e .com) Its made from soybeans which is a godsend for those troubled with hot flashes like myself. Another book I bought was the South Beach Diet book. I read that book and found the plan to be made up of things I would eat and the items were normal grocery store items so no hunting at the health food stores or buying online.

We have to be thankful to the authors for making us all fit and healthy.
