Your Retirement, Your WayReview Date: 2006-11-22
A Personal Retirement ConsultantReview Date: 2007-03-03
The authors recognize that financial planning is only a part of retirement planning. The genius of the book is that it integrates the financial side of things with the personal, psychological issues that merit--but seldom receive--acknowledgement and attention. The reader performs exercises that reveal his or her individual personality profile. This leads to careful consideration of life goals, and the preparation of a meaningful "New Life One-Year Action Plan."
There is an explicit recognition that one's retirement plan is going to involve costs quite different from those that are a part of pre-retirement life. Every aspect of financial planning is covered in clear English. As with the psychological side, the financial parts of the book can easily be understood by anyone.
I mentioned that Your Retirement, Your Way, is `potentially' immensely useful. That's because the reader really must follow through with the exercises that are essential to the process. If you are looking for a quick read to get some facts about retirement and its challenges, this is not your book. If you want a trusted adviser who will help you develop your own, personal approach to retirement over a few weeks, then get the book, and get to work!

Successful Retirement Depends on More Than MoneyReview Date: 2007-12-10
Today, thanks to the self-help book craze, the scope and number of retirement guides seem to have expanded. I'm not a fan of self-help books in general, and I've been retired quite a while, but I still decided to take a look at one of the retirement guides for the new age.
Your Retirement, Your Way, by Alan Bernstein and John Trauth, is subtitled, "Why it takes more than money to live your dream." In thirteen chapters, including "Preparing Psychologically for Change," "Creating Your NewLife Master Plan Summary," and "Determining How You Want to Be Remembered," Bernstein and Trauth cover many of the retirement concerns I've faced, and they provide common-sense guides for coming to terms with these issues.
The authors of this book invite you to create a "personal, customized NewLife Master Plan . . . through a structured process that will give you the power to take your future life into your own hands and create the best possible retirement lifestyle unique to your own interests, personality, relationships, and situation." A lofty goal, indeed!
I especially like Bernstein's "Who Were You? Who Are You? Who Can You Become?" chapter because the author suggests writing down things such as "What I was doing when I was at my best," "Situations in which I've been at my worst," and many more. I promote the same strategy in a less structured way in my own book, Seniorwriting: A Brief Guide for Seniors who Want to Write (Infinity, 2007). "Writing to Discover," as I call it, is a great idea! I'm glad to see it included here.
I was also happy to be introduced to the "Birkman personality profile" (copyright Birkman International, Inc.), a somewhat complex but very interesting strategy used by some psychotherapists "to better understand people negotiating complex transitions."
I tried the included "Birkman Interest and Style Summary" to discover my interest and lifestyle colors: Red (Implementer), Green (Communicator), Yellow (Administrator) or Blue (Planner). My result was blue all the way. That means I like to plan activities, deal with abstraction, think of new approaches, innovate, and work with ideas. It also means that I appear perceptive, agreeable, conscientious, reflective, and creative.
Blue means that my interests include abstracting, theorizing, designing, writing, and originating, and that my fields include writing a book, joining a spiritual commuinity, teaching, and volunteering. My style is insightful, relective, selectively sociable, creative, thoughful, emotional, imaginative, and sensitive, and my preferred environment is cutting edge, informallly paced, organized in private offices, low key, and future oriented. With the exception of "joining a spiritual community," these terms fit me perfectly. If I had not pretty much done so already in my own way, I could have gone on with goals, strategies, objectives, and specific activities and tasks to create my NewLife Chart.
There's much more in this book, including one chapter on financial planning, but the emphasis is on self-anaylsis, facing reality, and planning ahead. This book fulfills its stated purpose to "help you recognize and draw on resources that you may never have recognized . . . to create a truly fulfilling life, custom-designed for you and you alone."
I heartily recommend Your Retirement, Your Way to anyone nearing or even beginning to think about retirement. It's a big step; don't take it unprepared.

Wonderful book full of specific "to do's"Review Date: 2008-01-09
The book is clearly written and easy to follow. I plan to give it as gifts to some of my older clients and keep it as a reference for myself.
5 years ago my Dad was 90 and very mentally sharp. He had surgery and was placed into an assisted living facility to recuperate and has never left. He violated nearly all of the advice in this book and now just 5 years later he is completely senile and does not know any of his children or grandchildren. I wish I had had this book to give to him 5 years ago!

Where Have All the Workers Gone?Review Date: 2000-03-06
Were companies to examine their own assumptions on hiring and firing, they would find a pervasive and self-destructive premise: old is bad. But as Beverly Goldberg argues in _Age Works_, employers - indeed, society as a whole - have built this premise on an ill-considered, ill-defined congeries of prejudices and presuppositions. Believe it or not, Americans age 55 and above take fewer sick days, adapt to new technologies successfully, and are more loyal to their employer than are their colleagues thirty years younger. And perhaps more importantly, they may be the only untapped workforce available. As hidebound organizations throw fortunes at untested youth, others more far-seeing (including Travelers, GTE, and Baxter Health Care) actively recruit, train, and depend upon senior workers. In a shrinking labor market, corporations and their HR departments may find a surprising competitive advantage in coaxing older employees away from the brink of an often sterile and impoverished retirement.
Eager to dismiss this challenge to their standard practices, naysayers and doomsayers will demand proof. Fortunately _Age Works_ reads more like a position paper than a business book, and like any good position paper, it's loaded with facts. Age Works is the ideal volume for anyone itching for a statistical analysis of the American workforce 1950-2050, in all its hues and strata. Arguably Goldberg's love of statistics verges on addiction, but in the pharmacy of authorial dependence, statistics are a pretty benign habit. More distracting, although again less than fatal, is the book's policy-wonk style. Goldberg stands foursquare in the school of tell-`em-what-you're-going-to-tell-`em, tell-`em-, tell-`em-what-you-told-`em, and _Age Works_ sometimes reads like an executive summary that cannot bear to end.
Nonetheless, _Age Works_ is a cogent, serious, undeniably well-supported piece. Even those who resist the proposed solutions (admittedly the book's weakest section) will find the diagnosis difficult to dispute. Like it or not, America's workforce will continue to grow smaller and grayer over the next twenty years. And by the time the population bounces back, corporations' hiring practices will have appealed to all ages - or to none.

Best Harry Lorayne Memory Book Yet! Review Date: 2008-04-08
Naturally if you have ordered this book, you are in a situation that you may be feeling concerned that your mind is feeling fuzzy, or that you want to keep your brain young and vibrant. You will not be dissapointed in this book at all.
I especially liked how positive the books overall feeling is. That our brains shouldn't be deteriorating and actually should be sharper than ever. I have tried the techniques in the book, and as long as I apply them, I have noticed an improvement! I now know my Bible books forwards, and backwards. Have memorized several scriptures, and am partially thru the Sermon on The Mount.
Our brains are wonderfully made, and we should take care of it. So go ahead, whatever you decide to memorize, it will help you in middle age and beyond. Thanks Harry for the encouragment and help to sharpen up!

The 69 StepsReview Date: 2007-12-04
Don illustrates these principles by, for example, filling the book with intelligent humor (OK, not all of it is intelligent), some his own and some borrowed from others. At the same time, the book is science-based and is well-stocked with both data and references. The text is aimed at helping people to become folks who are "AUI," that is "aging under the influence" of leading a healthy and well lifestyle. The goal is to, as you age, maintain the best possible health, the highest available energy levels, the greatest obtainable degree of physical mobility, and the fullest mental capacity. None of these are to be measured on any absolute scale, but should for each person reflect the reality of their life and their particular genetic and educational endowments or lack thereof.
To help you do this, Don has assembled his "69 Tips." Why 69? Well, Don was 69 when he wrote the book. I suppose that is as good a reason as any. Among them are: "Nutrition [is] the heart of the matter;" "Just say no [to medicalization];" "Take Charge [of the wellness process];" "Understand Longevity;" "Stay centered and balanced;" "Exercise [your] critical faculties;" "[Practice achieving] serenity;" "Sex is wonderful;" "Humor is powerful stuff;" "[Think about] The Meaning of Life [for yourself]." A most useful Wellness prescription for all of us.

A Call To Living Well!Review Date: 2007-11-29
What will keep this book within reach is not only the easy "pick it up and put it down" format of 69 tips, but the absolutely irrepressible zeal that Don has for living that shows through. A true "founding father" of the modern day wellness movement, Dr. Ardell has been at the forefront of helping us all to realize that lifestyle is the biggest determinant of our health. Don's approach to REAL Wellness, is just that...real, and, fortunately for us, it's fun too.

This delightful and informative romp takes the sting out of agingReview Date: 2007-10-31
Dr. Ardell is a social critic and obviously is concerned about the lack of critical thinking and unhealthy practices that is becoming an American tragedy. He does not shove his views down our throats, but allows us to enjoy his perspective and invites us to form our own.
I've seen Don Ardell speak at conferences and I'm pleased to report that this book, like Don, inspires us to be all we can be. Reading Aging Beyond Belief is an opportunity to spend time with a delightful and knowledgeable wellness role model and guru.
I'm still a relative youngster (49) and I feel lucky to have Dr. Ardell's book in my library. I will be purchasing this book for family and friends. My hope is that they too, will age beyond belief.
Don't Miss it!Review Date: 2007-10-15

Dr. Don, an exceptional man, offers some rare insights into that inevitable process that will occur to us all
His fearless distillation of a reflected life contains priceless gems for each of us
from his thoughts on death to a sweet meaningful gift to grandchildren.
My personal favorite....live a little kindness, pass on a little of it each and every day.

You are not alone...Review Date: 2006-07-01
The toughest challenge faced by most twentysomethings is that period just after college. The process of discovering you really are an adult even though you still feel like a teenager can be as awkward as puberty and even lonlier.
Add to this the fact that for some reason many college grads are absolutely convinced that they are the only ones going through this transition and that everyone else already has a great job, great prospects and a great spouse, or at least a solid relationship. Truth is, nearly everyone goes through at least some time in this purgatory - where this engaging book steps in.
Stories covering everything from first jobs from Hell to cubicle humor to apartment woes let you know that not only are you not alone but your problems may actually be a bit funnier than you thought.
The Editors of this book have done a wonderful job putting this project together and I look forward to more great work from them in the future.

Hormones affect men just as much as women, and we were both ignorant of how important it is to know what your spouse is going through at midlife. Give this book to anyone in their middle years, and they will be forever greatful. Heck, they should read it before they even get to that stage of life.
It should be required reading for everyone as they get to their 30's, and beyond

Way over 50!Review Date: 2006-06-24
I admit, it's kinda scary looking at 70 year olds (even though they're in great shape!) demonstrating the exercises in a book for the over 50 crowd, but I also purchased a book called, "Strength Training Past 50" and although it's basic in it's own way (it demonstrates free weights, and if you're into going to a gym also machines), many of the photos in it are of people much closer to my own age, and that at least speaks to my comfort zone on working out and aging! It's also more of what I needed to start getting more fit.

I discovered weight training at age 63 when I finally decided to do something for the health of my bones. This book has been the perfect guide. The authors give step by step, easy to follow and clearly illustrated instructions on the correct path to weight lifting--without injury. And they don't stop there! With an engaging style they share their own personal stories of advancement in the arenas of bodybuilding and fitness (truly inspirational). They address issues of motivation, nutrition and age appropriate progression. Included in the book are enough workout charts to take you through an entire year without repeating a routine.
What comes through loud and clear in this book is that Frank and Karen Cuva really care about all of us folks stumbling our way toward fitness. Whether you work with a personal trainer full-time or you are your own personal trainer, this book is invaluable!
Great Book!Review Date: 2004-12-28
I read the book and I thought, this doesn't sound too bad, but I found myself miserable. I just was frustrated after a week....it was very regimented. I did benefit by eliminating my coffee habit with the help of a wonderful coffee substitute called soyffee (www.s o y c o f f e e .com) Its made from soybeans which is a godsend for those troubled with hot flashes like myself. Another book I bought was the South Beach Diet book. I read that book and found the plan to be made up of things I would eat and the items were normal grocery store items so no hunting at the health food stores or buying online.
We have to be thankful to the authors for making us all fit and healthy.
