celebrating the cigarReview Date: 2007-01-15
This tiny gift-book from CIGAR AFICIONADO latches onto the celebratory nature of modern cigar-smoking and works it for all its potential. Essentially, it's a compilation of quotes by cigar smokers and about cigar smoking that will give the average celebratory cigar smoker a good chuckle.
A good stocking-stuffer for the guy who fits the demographic.

Cigars!...Thats the reputation, integrity I love.Review Date: 1998-08-12
Clever writing by Marvin R. Shanken. I look forward to reading more from this connoisseur - over a fine cigar and possible cognac.
Here's one he left out;
"Try enjoying a fine cigar along with a cesar with a touch of tabasko sauce and grainbelt beer chaser."

Vintage Lighter CollectionReview Date: 2007-05-15
Horrible waste of timeReview Date: 2008-04-11
First, its title is highly misleading! It claims to be an identification and value guide but there is no effort made to help the reader identify anything or explain how the prices were obtained.
The author, James Flanagan, makes no effort to explain to the reader the most basic information on the topic. No information is provided that explains how to identify vintage lighters, names of brands or manufacturers etc. Indeed aside from an exceptionally long list of acknowledgements (10+ people) the author provides two short paragraphs on the subject that explain how writing the book was "his labor of love". That's it!
He then goes on to show 200 pages of vintage lighter photos along with their supposed values. The trouble with this approach is that he does not explain why he selected the lighters he did and how he arrived at his prices. Indeed many of them seem highly dubious. For example the "Bell Hop Cigarette Holder" on page 204, Flanagan gives a valuation of $75-100 but if you were to look it up in past ebay sales history you would see that since 2000 that lighter has consistently attained a price in the $500+. Ditto for most of the other lighters -- you cannot obtain most of them at the low prices he quotes. Considering this book was published in 2005 and the data cited above was easily obtainable on a site like eBay's marketplace research, such an error is unforgivable!
I could go on to citizen the book on many other levels (like its lack of high end lighters, its filler topics like match books covers & ephemera, its poorly organized table of contents and many of the obvious errors / typos)... but you get the point. The book was poorly conceived, organized and executed.
The obvious question arises then as to why the book was published in the first place? The answer is simple: This title is part of a broader series called Schroeder's Antiques - there are several advertisements all over the book for other titles from the series. It looks to me like they wanted a title that they could pass on to retailers as an actual price & identification guide as there are not many good ones out there at this price level. What the consumer gets is a highly questionable source of data with a title that makes it sound as though it is the authority on the subject. Don't be fooled!

compelling questions and difficult answersReview Date: 2005-11-08
Dar and Frenk's text, and their conclusions, sent a large ripple, if albeit a brief one, through the addiction research community. Most notably, there was a published correspondence between the editors of the journal "Addiction" and Dar and Frenk regarding their text. The editors at "Addiction" suspected and alleged that Dar and Frenk received funds from the tobacco industry and utlimately failed to disclose this as a conflict fo interest. Dar and Frenk, conversely argued that their position was based on a review of existing data and not novel research, and that this data was transparent to all in the scientific community. Further, they argued that other researchers failed to disclose possible conflicts of interest, such as those researchers who received funds from major pharmaceutical companies who manufacture smoking cessations products. If this collegial quibbling reveals anything, it supports Dar and Frenk's position that scientific research- at least social science research- is less objective than we would like to believe.
This text is a great read for those interested in research, primarily, and the subject matter secondly. The controversial nature of the subject, though, makes it worth reading (if the subject were something less controversial, it could be read as very dry). Since the text was written with the scientific community in mind, it of course will not appeal to a broad audience, which is unfortuante, since the claims that are made are of great social importance with regard to the chasm between what science says, what is true, and how the public tells the difference between the two.

How can smokers keep their kids from smoking??Review Date: 2004-04-13
The granddaughter observes people smoking and chewing tobacco. Her observations and the illustrations convey the "yuckiness" of tobacco. Some people who are not moved by long-term consequences, can understand the unattractive, unappealing aspects of tobacco. Between the girl's observations and the grandfather's discussion, children are experience both the short and long term effects of smoking.
This book should be interesting and accessible to elementary school and middle school-aged children and adolescents. Parents who are recovering from other types of addictions might also make use of this book when they talk to their children.

My favorite anti-smoking bookReview Date: 2001-05-04
This excellent illustrated book tells about smoking from the points of view of a girl and her grandfather. The information from the grandfather is particularly compelling. He explains to his granddaughter that he still smokes because he is addicted and has tried many times to stop. He expresses anger that he is addicted. and uses this to explain why his granddaughter should never start. The granddaughter observes people smoking and chewing tobacco. Her observations and the illustrations convey the "yuckiness" of tobacco.
