A pleasant read but not for the serious collector

This book is a pleasant addition to the world of pipe smoking, but is certainly not for the serious collector of high grade quality pipes. Positive points. 1.Several good plates of celebrities with their pipes 2.A good introduction on the history of tobacco and pipe smoking around the world. 3.A few good colour plates of Peterson pipes. Negative points; 1.No in depth study of the variety of different pipes on the market 2.No in depth study of pipe makers around the world and their specialites 3.No in depth look at pipe tobacco and tobacco blending 4.Very few colour plates of high grade pipes or freehands,-which is the most tragic. A book that equals "La pipe" published by Flamirillon has yet to be produced!

This is, without question a wonderfully illustrated "coffe-table" style book. My problem, however, is that it is lacking in information. As a new pipe smoker I was looking for a book that was very nut and bolts in it's approach to pipe and tobacco selection and maintenance. This book does have lots of info on the history of pipes and tobacco, but little instruction on their actual use. If you are a new smoker I would shop for another book. However, if your an old hand with a pipe and don't need someone to tach you how to break in a pipe (or such things) you will probably enjoy this book.

This book is for the history buff interested in the fine art of how the pipe has made it's evolution from as far back as 500 BC to the present. The discovery of erica arborea growing wild from over two hundred years before being discovered. How King James I in 1604 was looked down upon in his abuse in the sinning against God, Pope Urban VIII issued a formal decree against it. How Frederick the II in 1712 - 1786 banned an entire city from smoking a pipe. This introduces the pipe smokers, like Mark Twain, General Douglas MacArthur, Sir Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and many others. It discusses the growing and harvesting, drying and curing, processing and blending of tobaccos. The different types of tobaccos the how to's in packing the tobacco to the proper way of tapping your pipe when knocking out the ash to cleaning and maintaining your pipe. This a very interesting book if you are into the history of the pipe

A wonderful book for pipe and cigar lovers!

In an age when PC "nannyism" has become an oppresive rule, this book reminds one of more civilized times. It also reminds one of a pleasure that can rarely be enjoyed except at home - a pipe filled with premium pipe tobacco. This is a fantastic book.

This tiny gift-book from CIGAR AFICIONADO latches onto the celebratory nature of modern cigar-smoking and works it for all its potential. Essentially, it's a compilation of quotes by cigar smokers and about cigar smoking that will give the average celebratory cigar smoker a good chuckle.

A good stocking-stuffer for the guy who fits the demographic.

I really loved this little gem! It's small in size but's packed with huge flavor.

Clever writing by Marvin R. Shanken. I look forward to reading more from this connoisseur - over a fine cigar and possible cognac.

Here's one he left out;

This is a great book for vintage lighter collectors. I have two from the 50's that I could not find a value for anywhere until I bought this book.

Horrible waste of time

Review Date: 2008-04-11
This book was a complete disappointment. We bought this book because we are ebay merchants wanting a good book to identify some vintage lighters we had recently purchased.
First, its title is highly misleading! It claims to be an identification and value guide but there is no effort made to help the reader identify anything or explain how the prices were obtained.
The author, James Flanagan, makes no effort to explain to the reader the most basic information on the topic. No information is provided that explains how to identify vintage lighters, names of brands or manufacturers etc. Indeed aside from an exceptionally long list of acknowledgements (10+ people) the author provides two short paragraphs on the subject that explain how writing the book was "his labor of love". That's it!
He then goes on to show 200 pages of vintage lighter photos along with their supposed values. The trouble with this approach is that he does not explain why he selected the lighters he did and how he arrived at his prices. Indeed many of them seem highly dubious. For example the "Bell Hop Cigarette Holder" on page 204, Flanagan gives a valuation of $75-100 but if you were to look it up in past ebay sales history you would see that since 2000 that lighter has consistently attained a price in the $500+. Ditto for most of the other lighters -- you cannot obtain most of them at the low prices he quotes. Considering this book was published in 2005 and the data cited above was easily obtainable on a site like eBay's marketplace research, such an error is unforgivable!
I could go on to citizen the book on many other levels (like its lack of high end lighters, its filler topics like match books covers & ephemera, its poorly organized table of contents and many of the obvious errors / typos)... but you get the point. The book was poorly conceived, organized and executed.
The obvious question arises then as to why the book was published in the first place? The answer is simple: This title is part of a broader series called Schroeder's Antiques - there are several advertisements all over the book for other titles from the series. It looks to me like they wanted a title that they could pass on to retailers as an actual price & identification guide as there are not many good ones out there at this price level. What the consumer gets is a highly questionable source of data with a title that makes it sound as though it is the authority on the subject. Don't be fooled!

Colorful photos capturing details of hundreds of all kinds of lighters make this a prime guide for collectors. The captions right beside each photo note material, manufacturer, date, size, and price range--e. g., "Chromium lighter/case, made for king-size cigarettes, by Evans. Circa early 1950s. 4-3/4"h, 2-1/2w. $30.00-50.00." Animals, Art Deco, Beyond the Ordinary, Decorative, Miniatures, and Sets are among the many different categories. The category Miscellaneous Tobacco Accessories for pipe holders, match boxes, cigarette tins, etc., comes at the end. Numerous sharp photos, simple informative captions, and clear organization make this a ready reference for collectors and dealers at all levels. With its many photos arranged orderly, it is particularly useful to beginners to scan through to find out what types of lighters and related items to keep their eyes open for at flea markets and other resources.

Waste of time and money, there was almost no information, not a Zippo in sight, all odd ball lighters, no details just quickie price information including sections on matches, holders and other non-lighter items. We needed a price guide to lighters, and this was not it. The only thing big about it, well there was nothing big about it, as a matter of fact there was not a big value, or even a big book, much smaller than most price guides.

Looking at the last review, I was somewhat dismayed. Obviously there is a bias present on the part of the reviewer. This is a very coomprehensive resource that provides information not only on tobacco but on persons involved, companies and historical events. I recommend it and also advise a potential buyer to exam the professional reviews that can be found right after the summary. Thank you, have a good day.

As one reviewer said, but more vociferously, this encyclopedia covers more Anti-tobacco issues than tobacco issues. It might more properly be entitled A Bibliography of Anti-Tobacco Personalities and Literature. There are some good articles on smoking, cigarettes and tobacco per se, but most deal with the personalities and issues of the tobacco wars.

An Excellent Resource

I was somewhat dismayed when I read the other reviews as well. I have to admit that I am a former smoker myself, but did not find this book as "biased" as some have indicated. I am a librarian by profession and find this an invaluable resource when I have people who are writing research papers. It is chock full of information and very well organized. Certainly, up-to-date topics and statistics are - because of the fact that this is a book and not because of the author - not present. What is found though, are easy to read articles, photographs and a plethora of information that give one an overview on the many aspects of the tobacco industry. I reccomend this book highly and wish the author would update the volume.

WARNING! Crippling anti-smoking bias!

Despite the prim "research volume"-type title, this is nothing more than an extensive anti-smoking screed with a scattering of simplistic information about tobacco and smoking. This severe bias unfortunately renders the book almost utterly worthless, and those looking for factual, unbiased, and useful information about smoking and tobacco are recommended to search for a copy of the out-of-print Tobacco Encyclopedia by Voges.

Dar and Frenk's " A Critique of Nicotine Addiction" is a "research" text in the truest sense of the term. Their stated mission is to take a firmly entrenched belief-- that it is nicotine in tobacco that is the cause of addiction-- and then go back and look again at volumes of data that contributed to that belief. What they present, however, is somewhat shocking. Dar and Frenk suggest the the nicotine addiction hyposthesis, as it is known, is indefensible based on the scientific data they have researched and reviewed (over 700 studies, according to their counts). What is suspected, alternatively, is that other factors are in play. On the macroscopic level, they suggest strong political and social biases play a great part. On the microscopic level, the indiviudal level, they suggest that the social biases actually deceive people into believeing they are chemically addicted to nicotine, thus, paradoxically, making it more difficult to quit.

Dar and Frenk's text, and their conclusions, sent a large ripple, if albeit a brief one, through the addiction research community. Most notably, there was a published correspondence between the editors of the journal "Addiction" and Dar and Frenk regarding their text. The editors at "Addiction" suspected and alleged that Dar and Frenk received funds from the tobacco industry and utlimately failed to disclose this as a conflict fo interest. Dar and Frenk, conversely argued that their position was based on a review of existing data and not novel research, and that this data was transparent to all in the scientific community. Further, they argued that other researchers failed to disclose possible conflicts of interest, such as those researchers who received funds from major pharmaceutical companies who manufacture smoking cessations products. If this collegial quibbling reveals anything, it supports Dar and Frenk's position that scientific research- at least social science research- is less objective than we would like to believe.

This text is a great read for those interested in research, primarily, and the subject matter secondly. The controversial nature of the subject, though, makes it worth reading (if the subject were something less controversial, it could be read as very dry). Since the text was written with the scientific community in mind, it of course will not appeal to a broad audience, which is unfortuante, since the claims that are made are of great social importance with regard to the chasm between what science says, what is true, and how the public tells the difference between the two.

This book shows that nicotine is not addictive in spite of what government agencies and prominent scientists have been telling the public for years. I wonder whether other myths endorsed by the US government are able to withstand the intelligence of Frenk and Dar.

Such an aggressive little girl...

Review Date: 2005-11-21
The real truth of this story is lost in the sensasionalist notion of it's topic, namely smoking. Obviously the authors are no shareholders of RJR or Phillip Morris. But, bury a bad-mannered girl who loses the ability to conduct her in a civil manner, by raising her hand to make her sentiments known for instance, in a topic about smoking, then all is well and good, right? Wrong. If this had been a book about anything else, we'd have been outraged at the manners of this child, yet, because it deals with second hand smoke, we tolerate it. For shame. Put this child in the corner, then let her voice her sentiments. Teach her some manners, then she can talk about others' and their right to smoke freely, particularly adults (whom she feels the need to criticize). A bad-mannered, foul-mouthed little girl, in need of serious civility.

How can smokers keep their kids from smoking??

Adults who are addicted to tobacco often wonder how they can have the moral authority to tell their children not to smoke. This book will help them keep their children from falling into the tobacco addiction trap. This excellent illustrated book tells about smoking from the points of view of a girl and her grandfather. The information from the grandfather is particularly compelling. He explains to his granddaughter that he still smokes because he is addicted and has tried many times to stop. He expresses anger that he is addicted.

The granddaughter observes people smoking and chewing tobacco. Her observations and the illustrations convey the "yuckiness" of tobacco. Some people who are not moved by long-term consequences, can understand the unattractive, unappealing aspects of tobacco. Between the girl's observations and the grandfather's discussion, children are experience both the short and long term effects of smoking.

This book should be interesting and accessible to elementary school and middle school-aged children and adolescents. Parents who are recovering from other types of addictions might also make use of this book when they talk to their children.

Truly a horrible book. Don't buy it - get it from a library or buy a used copy. Mr. Moore shouldn't receive a dime in royalties. This retired BATF agent doesn't attempt to hide his hatred of the FBI, The National Rifle Association (NRA), and "Gun Lovers" (his description) of all types. To try to smear the NRA, he states that the NRA lied about BATF, yet he wrote numerous falsehoods (lies) about the NRA. For example, he falsely wrote that the NRA sold the rifle (that killed President Kennedy) to Oswald. Such false statements make an intelligent reader question all his so-called "facts". A reader would have to review all his footnotes and source material to judge if his "facts" and conclusions are accurate or just a reflection of his bias, hatred and prejudice. Is the BATF filled with agents such as this? If so, we may have a real problem. Mr. Moore clearly advocates ignoring citizen rights to nail BATF targets. The Second Amendment? It doesn't exist for Mr. Moore.

I disliked this book so much that I'm returning it. It starts out telling you how you're going to become fat and depressed if you quit smoking and then the rest of the book just tells you to exercise. I've quit smoking before (once for 2 1/2 years) AND I have major depression and I will tell you I was always happier as an ex-smoker, even without regular exercise. It's true you may gain maybe 5-10 lbs. on the average and it IS always good to have an exercise routine, but I just found this book to be depressing and discouraging for someone who just quit or is thinking of quitting. There isn't a lot out there to support the ex-smoker, but I found _The Invisible Drug_
to be the most helpful so far. I gave this book 2 stars instead of 1 only because the authors had good intentions in writing the book and some people may find it useful since there aren't too many books like it.

This is definitely not a book for people who want to stop smoking, but for those who have. It is excellent with all its tips on how to butt out and not return to the nicotine habit. Much in the book -- especially the facts about the damage nicotine can do to one's health -- may permanently keep you from smoking again. This is well written with many exercises and other techniques to keep you from ever lighting up again.
