Making a Living as an Artist- The Real DealReview Date: 2004-05-19
This book prepares beginners for a life of living off one's own wits as an artist. It contains reasonably priced, low and high tech ways to promote your art on your own. It's required reading for anyone seriously planning on making a career in the arts. Art professors would do their students a big favor by making this book a required text.
Julius Vitali encourages artists to think of themselves as small business entrepreneurs, like painters of the Renaissance who ran their studios as businesses. In this revised edition, there are important chapters on running a home business efficiently, using media to get your work into the public eye, Internet marketing and making a career in Europe. Other chapters contain helpful strategies for exhibiting, grant writing, assembling a résumé and portfolio. I've been making a living as an artist for more than 25 years and this book taught me a lot of new strategies and unorthodox methods for marketing and self-promotion. It contains realistic information that could only be acquired from successful daily practice. Why start from scratch when you can get this type of help?
Making a career in the arts takes an aggressive approach to selling. Julius Vitali shows it can be done and how anyone can do it with straightforward, no-nonsense advice.
Do You Want To Know How To Sell Your Art?Review Date: 2004-06-14
It is with this in mind that I decided to read and review Julius Vitali's updated edition of The Fine Artist's Guide To Marketing And Self Promotion.
Vitali's question in his introduction- how do fine artists create a reputation and career that will ultimately allow commercial galleries to sell their work- sets the tone of this extremely informative book.
We often hear the common complaint of artists that they have been rejected so many times that they might as well throw in the towel and forget about selling their work. A simple reply to the artist would be to persist and don't be discouraged. However, unfortunately this is not enough.
They must realize, as Vitali points out, there are other factors contributing to making an artist known, such as knowing about publicity, marketing, a clear and articulated aesthetic vision, networking, timeliness, and yes, a certain amount of luck.
Vitali deals with all of these elements in his eleven chapters that clearly point the artist in the right direction. In addition, the reader is also provided with brief profiles of thirteen successful artists, who have implemented to a lesser or greater degree many of Vitali's guidelines. When I was growing up my parents always told me that you learn from the best not the worst. In other words, find out why certain individuals are successful and learn from them. This is basically Vitali's motive for including these thirteen profiles, wherein the reader may be able to implement some of what worked for these artists.
There is also no shortage of interesting advice scattered throughout the book. As examples, did you know that making personal contact with magazines and newspapers is the most effective way to achieve success with these publications; be careful if you exhibit in the same area and repeatedly send media releases, this may turn off reports and reviewers; that more people listen to radio than ever before and this is an excellent opportunity to be known.
In addition to receiving some excellent tips as to how to market and sell yourself, the author provides timely resources pertaining to grants for individuals and special projects, corporate support for the arts, exhibiting your art professionally in a variety of venues, assembling a résumé, portfolio, and letters of recommendation.
A useful appendix at the back of the book deals with digital resources, Internet security and other related Internet topics, useful software, printers, ink and paper, and publishing.
Julius Vitali is a well- known international artist who has exhibited all over the globe, and his work appears in numerous public and private collections.
Artists who will devote the time to thoroughly read and probably re-read chapters that are most appropriate to their situation have the most to gain from Vitali's advice.

Accuracy of the book reflected in the cover image.Review Date: 2007-02-16
The major focus is on attitude and doing good work. Between these two focuses you will do great. The book explains how to maintain and brand yourself with an attitude, while also providing the tricks of the trade in doing good work. The book is simple and straight forward. There is very little B.S.
I am at the beginning my career and have seen great results so far. After reading the book, I have given to a colleague and to a friend. Both have enjoyed it and wish they had read it earlier in their careers.

If you're an Indie Musician, you need to buy this book!Review Date: 2007-11-25
I've read a lot of music marketing books, and none of them even compare to this. Bob's analogies and real life experiences truly shine and help to make the book filled with useful knowledge.
In the first section, the basic training, he talks about the three main stages of music marketing: creating awareness, making connections, and asking for the sale. If you aren't doing any of these three, then you need to. The second key point he hits on in this section is goal setting. If you don't actually write your goals down and set focused, yet flexible, deadlines, you won't succeed. He then shows the first five steps of marketing (and profiting from) music. Theses include knowing who your ideal fans are, what motivates them, what your brand identity statement is, and focusing on what your fans will get out of the music. Finally, he hits the point of knowing what kind of music you are dealing with and how to portray it in words.
In the second section, online marketing, he shares several key insights on how to use the internet effectively to market your music. There is so much money spent online on music that you are crazy not to be marketing yourself with the internet. Baker gives many examples here of how different sites like myspace, facebook, flickr, and youtube are so useful and profitable. As well, by using blogs and podcasts to promote your group, you appeal to a much wider variety of people. He continues by giving more sites that can be used for indie artists and as well more examples of people who have succeeded in music by using the Internet.
In the third section, music publicity, he starts by giving 32 new ways to promote group or new release. These examples, some hilarious, are all insightful on how to use your imagination to tie in with recent events or publications. Next, he gives a list of 29 key elements to creating a sizzling press kit. This is without a doubt every self promoting musician needs to have in their head. Then, Baker talks about how you should talk to media people, how you should address letters to them to draw attention to yourself, different ideas for advertisements, and lots of other brilliant things that one wouldn't normally think of.
In the fourth section, money and sales, he starts off with 39 ways to sell a lot more of your cd's, dvd's, and music merchandise; once again, he offers many more insightful ideas on how to sell yourself and to get people to check your music out. A huge list of independent music sites follows. He then goes on to describe how you can make money as a musician and other random ideas on how to make some more money on the side. The basis behind this section is basically how to make money for a band.
The fifth and final section, promotion tactics, starts with 13 low-cost, high-impact music promotion ideas that work. These are more ideas on how to basically sell yourself as a musician. In Chapter 19, Baker describes how to use the telephone to get more and more exposure. This is very informative and is something every musician needs to know to become a better salesperson for their band. He concludes the book with still more brilliant ideas on promotion.
If you're at all interested in establishing renown within the music industry, you need to get this book and read it cover to cover. You'll love it and it will surely take you places you didn't imagine. From a musician's standpoint, trust me, this book is worth buying.

I started putting the ideas in this book to practice only a few days ago (I just received it in the mail this past week) and have already gotten a handful of new names for my mailing list (which has been converted into a benefit-packed club), gotten a gig with a highly respected Chicago promoter and had a new photo shoot to help hone in on the image I'm trying to convey. I look forward to the continued results I will see from putting this book into practice. Kudos to Baker!

Beautiful book - mostly for dancersReview Date: 2005-03-27
The book gives you a more than well insight in Jose Limons work and working-methods, and contains wonderful pictures. You get facinated and humble the more you know about Jose Limon.
The examples of exercises in the book is a valuable part of it. They are carefully written down, so you can follow them. If you can read notation there is a unique part with short pieces of choreographies.
I really enjoyed to read the book. Limons work comes even more alive and shows his uniqe technique. So if you are a dancer or have a good basic in dance, the book is highly recommed.
It is one of those books you just want to add to your collection.
