This book showed me what to do if my child uses alcohol. Since it happened, I've used the step-by-step guide and got some help. I'm deeply grateful. I've prayed and I hope other parents will read this book. Jan

Must Read For...well...Anybody In America

If you want to know what's going on today in U.S. schools, as a direct reflection of the greater society, I might add; if you want to know what the students are really struggling with and what teachers really say behind closed doors, this is the book for you. As an educator myself and an expert on both race relations and working with juvenile delinquents, I am greatly encouraged to see Roy Kaplan's important work in a form so readily accessible to the average reader. Some of what he reports is unsettling or even downright scary, but pretending we're asleep is not the answer. In fact it only brings further problems, as we have been forced to face in recent years. Kaplan puts the truth right out there on front street and then gives us the direction we need to go to make the appropriate and much needed changes. How much better can it get than that? The only thing the book isn't quite straight-up about is how crucial Roy Kaplan and people like him are to the process of healing he describes. It takes a real artist with the heart of a lion to wade into the turbulent waters he describes and make it to the other side.

This book is definitely a winner. Having spent a lot of time working with an older population, I'm always searching for a manual that clients will actually enjoy reading on their own. Oftentimes, coverage of this material is dry at best, which is unfortunate, because it is such an important topic. However, the team of Davies and Scully seem to write with the reader in mind--there are cute illustrations, it's easy to navigate, and the reader really learns a lot of simple exercises and techniques. I would definitely recommend it as a must read for anyone who has ever felt concerned for theirs--or a loved ones--balance, etc.

This book should make US medical services consumers angry

Lord and group take on a lot of simple things that will never make money, but should always be first in assessing fall risks and arranging prophylactic actions:
Test reaction times...why? because so very many older folks are taking too much medicine and reaction times are extended--AND no one is checking!
Never wear bifocal/trifocals to walk...why? because the focal length is adjusted for 12 to 18 inches, NOT 5 feet, where the step edge or the dropped item is. (the solution is to carry a pair of walking glasses, set at a refractory length of five feet.)
There is a lot here that you won't find in the US med ed system or it's practitioners. It's a great book for fifty year olds to read--for their own futures and for their parents daily lives.

The current president of SSSP and Professor, University of CA, Irvine, wrote a pre publication review and said:
"Miller and Knudsen combine a remarkably encyclopedic analysis of existing findings and original research to skillfully present an empirically grounded conceptual framework ... The result is clear: The value of this book for academics, advocates, and policymakers is beyond question, precisely because it is readable without betraying the complexity of the problem. In the process of addressing two important questions -- what do we know and what should we do -- Miller and Knudsen present their ideas in a clear, reasoned, and evidence-based way, which leaves the reader with a keen insight about the social context in which abuse and violence occurs as well as compelling ideas for social change."

I received this book as part of a PR packet in my office and when the author called to see if I had received it I took a deeper look. I have just ordered three more copies so that a number of us in the office can do the program together. I have history of CVD, Diabetes and Cancer on both sides of my family and feel that this healthful, well-rounded program will help me change the message my cells are getting from the food I eat. I will be giving this book as a gift as well as following the plan for the rest of my life.

Thank you, Jennifer!

Typ[ical Jo Bannister - EXCELLENT
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-08
Jo Bannister is one of my always-read authors. Her Brodie Farrell mysteries are excellent. This one, with entirely new characters, continues her trend of excellence. The plot is intriguing, in that Mouse (Matthew) the alleged perpetrator of the murder of his mother and a church arson, is a young man who is alleged, at age 6, to have started the fire in his home which caused his mother to rescue him, and which created severe psychological problems for him. The detective, and his rescuer, is his father's fiance (father and mother having divorced many years earlier). Following Agnes (our detective) through disagreements with fiance Robin over his angry abandonment of Mouse, Vicar Parsons' inadvertent involvement because a key clue is a supposed medieval banner hanging in his church (and yes, Vicar Parsons is very aware of the humor in his name and calling), to the final struggle to save Mouse's life and the denoumant of the true villain, is well-written and exciting. Add in medieval religious legends and war in the Middle East in the pre-Israel period, and I was breathlessly turning pages until the end. And, I didn't have a clue as to the real villain until the last 20 pages. An intriguing mystery, a great read.

Jess Lair is my favorite "self-help" author and I would recommend any of his writings to anyone struggling with life and its expected and unexpected twists and turns physical as well as emotional. Jess's heart attack started him on the new life quest that led to his writings to help others. This is a spiritual book, not a religious one. Jess and his wife are very much 12 step program advocates. If you've hit a wall and god is the only answer this will help you seek his help.

Great book but age level wrong.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-04
As a children's librarian, who was a social worker for 20 years, I highly recommend this book, but not for the ages given by Amazon.com. It should read GRADE 4-8 (age 10-14). It is definitely NOT a book for age 4-8.
Each chapter starts with a story of a child encountering a difficult situation (kissing unpleasant relatives, being lured into posing for child pornography, exhibitionists, incest by a father, obscene phone calls, and attempted rape). In each story, the child is supported and helped to deal with the situation. Facts are then given to help young readers understand how to avoid dangers themselves. In spite of the scary nature of the topic, the book is straightforward and positive, about girls and boys finding ways to act with strength to stay safe.
