A Reference "Must Have"Review Date: 2008-05-21

A truly weird approach to explaining common legal problemsReview Date: 2007-10-03
In "Peopld Get Screwed All The Time", Massi writes of "real people" who run afoul in one way or another of the law. They also seem to be quite a collection of losers who could qualify for leading roles if Woody Allen ever does a remake of "Broadway Danny Rose", a movie about an agent who represents really weird performers.
Ostensibly, Massi is writing about "Potecting Yourself from Scams, Fraud, Identity Theft, Fine Print, and More". In truth, it seems Massi is simply trying to exploit his minimal fame as a television talking head.
The people, allegedly real, are apparently dumber than bricks. For example, we have one individual who doesn't do anything when fraudulent charges start showing up on his credit card account. For another man, Massi says "[t]he easiest lesson to learn from Milton's story is not to cheat on your wife", after the guy's wife left him and the new girlfriend also left him broke with a massive pile of debt. Of course, Milton didn't bother looking at his credit card bills and "would not have been surprised by Rachel's excessive spending - over $50,000 worth - or that she had failed to pay the monthly bills". In other words, Milton like all of Massi's other subjects is a jerk who put himself in his own misery.
Massi ends each chapter with a "How I would have counseled" the person. It's really bland stuff. Say, Milton, don't cheat on your wife and get her angry enough to leave you and don't be too quick to give the honey you just met full access to all your credit cards and not look at the bills.
On the whole this is a silly book. Massi describes a bunch of not very bright people who get ensnared in the kinds of situations not very bright people find themselves in. It is highly unlikely that such people are going to buy this book before they get themselves into trouble - and nothing in this book will help them out of their troubles.
On the whole, save your money and don't bother with this title.

FABULOUS BOOK!!Review Date: 2008-07-01
The diet is easy to understand and food preparation is not complicated- even if you're only cooking for one. The diet consists of a high fiber, low calorie (around 1700 a day) diet and even allows you to make selections based on your preferences if you don't like what is suggested. For those of us who have a sweet tooth, she alllows a satisfying daily "indulgent treat" that is around 200 calories!
She clearly describes the exercise program that should be done daily and there are at least two photos for each move with suggestions for doing the move properly. She includes a chart for what to do if you can't do daily exercises and you can select the 5-day or 3-day program for the week. If you are expecially zealous, you can do the "must-do moves" and also additional ones daily to help you tone up more quickly. The exercise program consists of strength training (no equipment required other than 5, 8, 10 pound dumbbells) and daily walking. The strength training tones muscles while the walking burns calories.
Throughout the book, she throws in lots of interesting facts and sites many research studies that help you in your "training." I have been so impressed with this book that I have told many friends about the plan and my success with toning up... 6-7 of them purchased the book for themselves - even my 62 year old mom is loosing weight! After applying the plan to my daily lifestyle for the last few weeks, I am now in the chapter for "advanced" moves to continue my workouts. I am very greatful to this author who has found a way to educate me on a topic that once seemed so complicated. Now, I have a better understanding of how food consumption and exercise work together and have committed to make lifestyle changes that I will apply for the rest of my life... I can't recommend this book highly enough!
The best ever!Review Date: 2008-03-30
Basically they give you some great information in the front of the book and tons of meals to choose from in the back of the book. The middle of the book is what to eat and what to do (exercise) on that particular day and for the next 3 weeks. So it is a day by day plan for both eating and exercise. It does not get any easier then this. I lost 8 lbs in 3 weeks and most importantly felt great. The menu will give you 1700 calories a day but I felt better with 1500, so the choice is yours.
I gave it to two people to jump start a healthy life style and the last person lost it on me (or refuses to give it back)....I let me self go in the past year and Im running to the book store now for another copy. This one I will not let go of!!!
It really works... if you do!Review Date: 2008-02-16
I tried it and actually lost weight by eating all the time. (You have three meals and two snacks, plus a treat, every day). If I slacked off on either the food or the weightlifting, though, my weight loss did too.
Some of the meal suggestions are a bit too processed for my taste - prepared bread crumbs, frozen meals, more meat than I like to eat... but there are enough options to keep me happy.

Dr. Marks book made me aware of the consequences of these actions which is the key to good parenting. Dr. Marks is trying to say, "hey, sometimes it's OK not to keep up with the Jones's".
I read the book the first time in two nights and have referred to it a half a dozen times since. It's a real eye opener and definitely recommend it for parents.

A compelling indictment of a failed systemReview Date: 2000-05-16
Must read for those in the justice systemReview Date: 2001-02-02
This book is a strong argument for changing the structure of criminal justice in America. It is largely a statistical analysis and as such it presents material in a dispassionate way. It is not a rhetorical book of left leaning propaganda but a book that looks at hard facts. The rate of imprisonment is now so high that the authors suggest that if imprisonment rates were to be reduced to European levels the unemployment rate could increase by 1% or 2%. The cost of imprisonment in most states is so high that it is outdistancing higher education. The pressure of constructing prisons and maintaining them is that it is limiting the ability of some states to cover normal expenses. California has had to reduce some welfare and highway construction.
The authors present a strong case for how these policies impact unfairly on different racial groups. One of the more chilling sets of figures are the rates of imprisonment for Afro Americans. The authors show that of the age group 20 to 30 1/3 of Afro Americans are either in jail, on parole or on probation.
Most commentators have suggested that the current system instead of punishing more violent offenders tends instead to give long prison terms to low level offenders who have reasonable prospects of reform. A change to non custodial options plus lessening some offences for minor crime could lessen the cost to the community with more or less no real change in the incidence of offending.
The book is thought provoking well argued and easy to read. A must read for all in the field.
