Robert Massi takes his detailed and understandable Fox Network legal analysis to print in this handbook for survival in the 21st Century. Mr. Massi is, first and foremost, a teacher and his explanations and guidance are invaluable to avoiding the modern day beartraps that effect so many. An engaging read that untangles those legal nightmares of modern scams. If you only have one book in your personal library, this should be it.

This is a great book and full of information needed by the consumer. Bob Massi has experienced first hand the bureaucracy consumers have to deal with in everyday decision making. The book is a great guide to help prevent mistakes others have made in dealing with purchases of all kinds. Take the time and learn from this informative book.

A truly weird approach to explaining common legal problems

Review Date: 2007-10-03
Robert Massi is a fixture on FoxNews, appearing often as a "legal analyst". I'm not a lawyer, but Massi's explanations have left me scratching my head more than once. Often it seems Massi is just filling time without much regard for what he's saying - and not much thought either. He's not dumb - he just seems way to willing to express an opinion on legal matters without thorough consideration of the facts.

In "Peopld Get Screwed All The Time", Massi writes of "real people" who run afoul in one way or another of the law. They also seem to be quite a collection of losers who could qualify for leading roles if Woody Allen ever does a remake of "Broadway Danny Rose", a movie about an agent who represents really weird performers.

Ostensibly, Massi is writing about "Potecting Yourself from Scams, Fraud, Identity Theft, Fine Print, and More". In truth, it seems Massi is simply trying to exploit his minimal fame as a television talking head.

The people, allegedly real, are apparently dumber than bricks. For example, we have one individual who doesn't do anything when fraudulent charges start showing up on his credit card account. For another man, Massi says "[t]he easiest lesson to learn from Milton's story is not to cheat on your wife", after the guy's wife left him and the new girlfriend also left him broke with a massive pile of debt. Of course, Milton didn't bother looking at his credit card bills and "would not have been surprised by Rachel's excessive spending - over $50,000 worth - or that she had failed to pay the monthly bills". In other words, Milton like all of Massi's other subjects is a jerk who put himself in his own misery.

Massi ends each chapter with a "How I would have counseled" the person. It's really bland stuff. Say, Milton, don't cheat on your wife and get her angry enough to leave you and don't be too quick to give the honey you just met full access to all your credit cards and not look at the bills.

On the whole this is a silly book. Massi describes a bunch of not very bright people who get ensnared in the kinds of situations not very bright people find themselves in. It is highly unlikely that such people are going to buy this book before they get themselves into trouble - and nothing in this book will help them out of their troubles.

On the whole, save your money and don't bother with this title.

Stores today feature a multitude of products that promise to give people energy. Some of these may be helpful, but most of them are quick-fixes that ultimately leave people more fatigued. Long-lasting energy comes from "what you eat, your exercise patterns, how much and how well you sleep, how you deal with stress, and what your emotional life is like." Health writer Daryn Eller discusses these factors and how you can enhance your energy levels in her new book, Power Up: 101 Ways To Boost Your Energy. Eller suggests starting with why you feel fatigued. She says that "what sends one person into an energy crisis can differ markedly from what makes another fatigued." She offers a quick and simple quiz that helps readers zero in on their particular energy thief. From that, readers can go directly to the section of the book that will be most helpful to them. The section on nutrition includes tips for high-energy eating, information on supplements that enhance energy, suggestions for an anti-fatigue diet, and a list of "super foods." Fitness information includes "energy-enhancing strategies," how to avoid "workout drag," and a discussion of the benefits of yoga and tai chi. Those having difficulty sleeping will find lots of tips in the section on getting a good night's rest. Eller also provides information on alternative health techniques, including acupuncture, herbs, aromatherapy, correct breathing, and Healing Touch therapies. From there she moves into stress reduction, saying that "stress saps our emotional energy [and] it also draws on our physical energy as well." The final chapter is titled "When Nothing Works," which discusses some of the physical causes of fatigue such as allergies, anemia, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, lyme disease, and thyroid disease. Most of these require the services of a health care professional. Eller wrote Power Up to give people "insight into where energy comes from and how it gets depleted--sometimes inexplicably. Knowing how you get zapped will ultimately help you get more zip." Readers following her suggestions and tips will find "freedom from a life of lethargy and fatigue."

A Must-Read Book for All Parents

Dr. Fleming has written a "must read" book for all parents! He gives specific suggestions on how to raise your child from birth through the difficult teen years so that they will not fall into the trap of using addictive substances, from tobacco to alcohol to drugs of all kinds. Well written with substance. Emphasis is given to raising children in a Christian home with lots of love and trust while at the same time, with teenagers in particular, to "trust but verify".

Very useful book on preventing addiction!

This is a great book for parents who want to keep their children from becoming alcoholics and drug addicts - a parent's worst nightmare. It's a useful resource that both gives practical advice to parents as well as helps us understand the body's response to addiction. For instance, Fleming doesn't just tell us to start concerning ourselves with our children's exposure to drugs and alcohol when they reach the frightful teen years but implores us to realize that preventing addiction begins in elementary school. Also, this isn't simply a `just say no' book full of trite platitudes but a well-researched yet readable approach to the issues at hand. I highly recommend this book.

This excellent book is designed for parents of teens and youngsters who need the ammunition to prevent addiction problems. The author, being a Doctor of Medicine in Family Practice, has seen his share of addiction problems, so you are getting the advice of a professional in the area. His organization, descriptions, and methods of combatting and preventing addiction are just unsurpassed. The book is written in a straight forward manner with language that non-professionals can easily understand. You feel as if you were seated in Dr. Fleming's office, talking with him one on one. The book is just a superior resource. Sincerely, Dr. Lee Walker

FABULOUS BOOK!!

Review Date: 2008-07-01
This is the most well written nutritional and diet book I have ever seen! Diets can be so confusing and difficult to understand but the author has written this in a way that ANYONE can follow - if you CAN'T follow her plan and firm up, you don't WANT to! I have now lost 12 pounds after following her program for 6 weeks.

The diet is easy to understand and food preparation is not complicated- even if you're only cooking for one. The diet consists of a high fiber, low calorie (around 1700 a day) diet and even allows you to make selections based on your preferences if you don't like what is suggested. For those of us who have a sweet tooth, she alllows a satisfying daily "indulgent treat" that is around 200 calories!

She clearly describes the exercise program that should be done daily and there are at least two photos for each move with suggestions for doing the move properly. She includes a chart for what to do if you can't do daily exercises and you can select the 5-day or 3-day program for the week. If you are expecially zealous, you can do the "must-do moves" and also additional ones daily to help you tone up more quickly. The exercise program consists of strength training (no equipment required other than 5, 8, 10 pound dumbbells) and daily walking. The strength training tones muscles while the walking burns calories.

Throughout the book, she throws in lots of interesting facts and sites many research studies that help you in your "training." I have been so impressed with this book that I have told many friends about the plan and my success with toning up... 6-7 of them purchased the book for themselves - even my 62 year old mom is loosing weight! After applying the plan to my daily lifestyle for the last few weeks, I am now in the chapter for "advanced" moves to continue my workouts. I am very greatful to this author who has found a way to educate me on a topic that once seemed so complicated. Now, I have a better understanding of how food consumption and exercise work together and have committed to make lifestyle changes that I will apply for the rest of my life... I can't recommend this book highly enough!

The best ever!

I used this book after my son was born and found it to be informative, motivating and user friendly. Like most weight loss books, I assumed I had to read over 200 pages before I would lose a pound but that is not the case with this book.
Basically they give you some great information in the front of the book and tons of meals to choose from in the back of the book. The middle of the book is what to eat and what to do (exercise) on that particular day and for the next 3 weeks. So it is a day by day plan for both eating and exercise. It does not get any easier then this. I lost 8 lbs in 3 weeks and most importantly felt great. The menu will give you 1700 calories a day but I felt better with 1500, so the choice is yours.
I gave it to two people to jump start a healthy life style and the last person lost it on me (or refuses to give it back)....I let me self go in the past year and Im running to the book store now for another copy. This one I will not let go of!!!

It really works... if you do!

This is something I looked for for years.. an all-in-one, sensible, reasonable method for weight loss. It includes three weeks of menu plans, with options for variety, plus three weeks of workouts - walking and weights - set out with advice and encouragement. You could make this into a nine-week program by starting at exercise level 1, then 2, then 3.

I tried it and actually lost weight by eating all the time. (You have three meals and two snacks, plus a treat, every day). If I slacked off on either the food or the weightlifting, though, my weight loss did too.
Some of the meal suggestions are a bit too processed for my taste - prepared bread crumbs, frozen meals, more meat than I like to eat... but there are enough options to keep me happy.

This is one of the most comprehensive, detailed and thorough tomes on the subject of longevity. Part One deals with the aging process and how to determine one's aging status. It includes information on why, when and the way we age, plus details on the relevant laboratory tests.

Part Two is a practical manual that sets out the many ways in which we can enhance longevity. This includes information on how to prevent oxidative damage with anti-oxidants, DNA repair medications, detoxification and cleansing, resetting the insulin switch with diet and natural medicines, strengthening the heart, combating inflammation, restoring hormonal balance and revitalising the brain.

The book contains a wealth of practical advice and the latest information on nutritional supplements, herbs and natural hormones. It concludes with four appendices, a glossary, bibliography and index. Highly recommended for those who wish to take responsibility for their own health.

Dr. Williams' book brings hope and confidence to the reader looking for comprehensive information on health and aging. As I read through the chapters, I found a renewed understanding in my own health. Not only is Prolonging Health an amazing resource, it reads like a novel as he graciously interjects stories and the reasons behind the modifiable factors of longevity. Williams' writing style, both sincere and informational, reflects a simplicity in what are often medically complex issues. The art of writing is a special skill. He has mastered it eloquently. This is an extremely well-organized book that has a tremendous amount of heart and substance. It has become one of my all-time favorites.

As a parent, I find it hard not to keep up with the Jones'. A typical Saturday for my seven year old girl may start out with a soccer game, followed by a mid-day birthday party and a three-hour afternoon playdate. It's no wonder that my little girl is whiny, clingy and exhausted by nightfall. All she wants to do is veg in front of the TV or play alone with her dolls.

Dr. Marks book made me aware of the consequences of these actions which is the key to good parenting. Dr. Marks is trying to say, "hey, sometimes it's OK not to keep up with the Jones's".

I read the book the first time in two nights and have referred to it a half a dozen times since. It's a real eye opener and definitely recommend it for parents.

I have three children and the stress and competition for these kids is 10 times that of when I was a child. If I can follow any advice from Dr. Marks, my children will benefit greatly. I thank him for writing such a down to earth and amazingly true book.

This is a very important book. It should be required reading for all Congressmen and Senators, both federal and State. The situation it depicts will wreak havoc on the fabric of American society, unless corrected. The book not only points at the most pressing problems in our system of criminal justice, but also offers intelligent and powerful recipes for action. Should be also required reading for all colleges of criminal justice. Balanced, objective, yet full of passion for justice and for the America we all love, want and deserve. A must for true patriots.

Review Date: 2001-02-02
The United States of American has over the last ten years developed a strategy of increasing the average prison sentences for a range of crimes. The mechanics of this process are complex. The reason being that each state and the Federal Government have distinct criminal law systems. To summarise a large number of states have been passing laws which remove judicial discretion from sentencing substituting a range of fixed sentences for various forms of crime. These can either be three strikes and your in legislation, mandatory sentences for specific crimes or sentencing grid legislation. The Federal Government has also been waging the "war on drugs". The overall effect of this legislation is for the prison population to increase enormously and especially for afro Americans to be incarcerated in large numbers. The imprisonment rate in the States is similar to that of countries such as Russia and South Africa, places which have experienced social break down to an extent that it dwarfs America.

This book is a strong argument for changing the structure of criminal justice in America. It is largely a statistical analysis and as such it presents material in a dispassionate way. It is not a rhetorical book of left leaning propaganda but a book that looks at hard facts. The rate of imprisonment is now so high that the authors suggest that if imprisonment rates were to be reduced to European levels the unemployment rate could increase by 1% or 2%. The cost of imprisonment in most states is so high that it is outdistancing higher education. The pressure of constructing prisons and maintaining them is that it is limiting the ability of some states to cover normal expenses. California has had to reduce some welfare and highway construction.

The authors present a strong case for how these policies impact unfairly on different racial groups. One of the more chilling sets of figures are the rates of imprisonment for Afro Americans. The authors show that of the age group 20 to 30 1/3 of Afro Americans are either in jail, on parole or on probation.

Most commentators have suggested that the current system instead of punishing more violent offenders tends instead to give long prison terms to low level offenders who have reasonable prospects of reform. A change to non custodial options plus lessening some offences for minor crime could lessen the cost to the community with more or less no real change in the incidence of offending.

The book is thought provoking well argued and easy to read. A must read for all in the field.

This book is indeed practical in its application and theoretical enough to be able to us it as a text book for students. I recommend it for professionals and students who are in any type of helping industry in order to be informed of the very real risks involved to one's own health and welfare when giving so much of ourselves to others. This book is sorely needed in the areas of church ministry where there is a great emphasis on helping our fellow man but often pastors and lay workers are burnt out through lack of know how and knowledge to care for themselves because of the high demands of their congregations. Although not intended by the author to be used as a religious text as such it has invaluable insight which corelates to the 'other' types of caring that is done in community life.
