This book is very informative. The author does not take a stance on right or wrong but rather presents the act in a clear and concise way that is understandable. Definitely worth the read if you want to know what is going on in our world today.

I thought this book was inviting from the start. My favorite aspect of this book is that it covers the basics right at the beginning so if you are new to the patriot act or governmental issues in general then you won't get lost. It's good for beginners!!

Paul Ibbetson has written "Living Under The Patriot Act: Educating A Society" in a very clear manner which those of us who do not have a formal background in law can understand. I believe that the American people needs to pay much more attention to the Patriot Act and the possibility of it misuse in the near future.

Shortly after 9-11 in 2001, a bill was introduced in Congress and passed despite the fact that most members had not even had an opportunity to read it. It is popularly known as the Patriot Act. In his new book, Living Under The Patriot Act: Educating a Society ($17.99, Author House, available from Amazon.com), Paul A. Ibbetson, a former police chief currently studying for his PhD in sociology, shares his three years of research on what he calls "one of the most powerful laws of modern day." Those of both liberal and conservative political orientation have expressed serious concerns because, while it expands the government's ability to find and jail terrorists, it also portends the possibility of its misuse by a government less attentive to the dictates of the Constitution. The FBI admitted to such abuses just last month. The author's purpose, as the title notes, is to educate the reader to the various aspects of the bill, from its passage to its current status. The bill is due for reauthorization and this timely book permits for a thorough review of the way it works. This is not light reading because it rather intensively looks at the bill section by section. Nor is the book a polemic taking sides. Those of a legal bent of mind will find it a masterful piece of work.

I found the book to be very interesting and informative. It's not a light read, but the number of interesting facts that I found ended up teaching more about the laws of the Partiot Act and how it came to be formed. The author gives both sides to the debate and many perspectives that I never thought of before. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a rounded comprehensive study of the Patriot Act.

"I asked my friends, 'How do you date?' and soon learned that the average male's actions on a date were not far from the motivations of a serial rapist. Males were assuming what women wanted and then acting upon their own assumptions. Our society was teaching females to accept this unhealthy dating culture." ~Michael J. Domitrz

Michael Domitrz is a nationally renowned expert on dating. He travels the country teaching students, parents, educators and professionals about respect and sexual assault awareness. His life was changed when his sister was raped in the fall of 1989. He started to question how he viewed dating. Over the years he created a program to change the way people view dating, respect and sexual assault.

"May I Kiss You?" takes a look at more than sexual assault. This book asks challenging questions, provides thought provoking scenarios and presents dynamic solutions.

Whether or not you have decided to wait until marriage or think you could never be raped, this book will give you the insight you need to not only protect yourself, but to protect the person you are dating.

Michael Domitrz discusses body language and how unreliable it can be. He asks if you are sending the right messages to your dates. What is very interesting is how males and females read body language in a completely different fashion. While the male's reaction includes ideas about how the woman is very interested, the female's response will include statements reflecting her nervousness and how uncomfortable she is with a particular situation.

Recently while watching a movie, the man asked the woman if he could kiss her. How often does this occur? Should it occur more? The author thinks it should. I have to agree that women will find this romantic. Of course, I can't see that a guy would have to ask each time. As a relationship progresses into various stages, mutual respect and trust will guide more than questions. Right? The author doesn't seem to agree.

The author makes some interesting points about how you should receive consent or you could be acting under the parameters of a sexual assault. The emotional pain and trauma from a sexual assault can be intense. Victims can react in dramatic ways, drop out of school or want to move away from the area where the assault occurred.

"Sexual assault can happen when two good people are dating each other and one person acts with disregard for the other person's feelings and rights."

So what do you do if you feel you have been raped? Chapter five gives you the resources you need to take action. The author says that you always have the right to say STOP. Personally, I think you should think about what you are doing way before you need to say stop! If you don't want sex, then perhaps putting yourself in the position of being alone with a person is not a good idea. A Mob Mentality is however something to consider. Hanging around with the wrong types of people can be equally harmful.

The author also discusses "Weapons of Self-Defense" and shows how your body and clothes can be used as defense against an attack. He also explains how the body and mind shut down during traumatic experiences and shock can limit your ability to physically react to your assailant. Thinking ahead seems KEY. Going out with a group of ?good? friends on the first date seems a good idea.

The author gives excellent ideas on how to avoid being raped. Something as simple as selecting a different time of day for the date could save you years of trying to recover from a sexual assault. He discusses a variety of ways you can stay in control of your body. Even paying for half the date will give you more power or avoiding alcohol can help you remain in control. Date rape drugs are drugs everyone should be aware of so you can avoid this happening to you.

"May I Kiss You?" is not about whether you should have sex or not. This book does not discuss religious beliefs. It is about protecting yourself from having sex if you don't want sex in any given situation. It is about creating a safe environment in a world of potential predators.

Every parent should read this book and discuss it with their teenagers. No matter what your religious beliefs, this book has information that could save your life. This book deals with the realities of our modern world and will give teenagers and adults the information they need to protect their self-esteem and protect the people they love.

Highly Recommended for the Life Saving Information.

This revised, expanded second edition of Net Crimes & Misdemeanors: Outmaneuvering Web Spammers, Stalkers, And Con Artists comes from a cybercrime expert who provides easy, efficient methods for handling a wide range of online attacks. Himself a one-time victim of cyberstalking, Hitchcock became a victim's advocate and so doesn't come from a programmer's background. Her coverage therefore is most accessible to the lay consumer - the most likely victim of such crimes - and offers insights and tips on preventing everything from identity theft to internet dating, newsgroup problems and more.

In general, the new information and new stories were woven amid the 1st edition information so well that there was no way to make any assumptions and skip along through. Just for the heck of it I tried! Then went back and thoroughly read the particular section and found that there was new stuff I'd missed. I did this intentionally a couple times to check. Gave up on the game and just kept reading! New stuff I *really* liked - the chapter on blogs, journals, etc. and the Nigerian Chapter. Even the Afterword was perfect. Just rightly written. Can't explain it other than it seemed to encompass the entirety of the book for you.

One (of many) of my favorite line(s). Intro, page 2, para.4, sentences 1 and 2. Buy the book and find out!

This book is excellent.

I had heard about the first edition of this book, but never bothered. I honestly thought I knew everything about being online. Then I had a bad experience and heard the 2nd edition was coming out. I bought it at the first chance I could and believe me, I have been kicking myself for not buying the first edition. All the advice given in this book is wonderful. I even found a situation similar to what happened to me and the advice was so simple, I couldn't believe it. Now this book sits next to my computer and I've found myself pulling it out to read about whatever I am doing online. Don't think you know everything - you don't! Trust me on this.

This is the second edition of the previously read/critiqued Netcrimes and Misdemeanors book.

Once again, the author fills the pages with important and vital information about how to stay safe online. From scammers to hoaxes, stalkers and ebay, even online dating and keeping children safe from online predators, this book is packed with real life examples of how people made mistakes that made them a target for some online psycho. But not only does it have the mistakes that lead to the problem, it has the solutions and tricks to avoid the situation in the first place as well!

Both versions of this book are useful to anyone that surfs online, but I would urge people to get the second edition as it contains updated links and information. Learn to be safe online! Buy this book for yourself and anyone you know who's a newbie to the online world. You never know... it might just save their life.

Identity theft, forgery, harassment . . . its happens to thousands of people every day, children included.

It is estimated that more than sixty percent of children between the ages of 13 and 17 have a Myspace profile, my own children are included in that percentage.

I thought that frequent supervision, placing our computer in the kitchen, and an expensive computer software program would be sufficient to protect my children. I was wrong. With tips from this book, I quickly changed simple computer settings that could ultimately prevent my children, or myself, from becoming a cybercrime victim.

The details that Jayne Hitchcock includes in this book about victim prevention and the procedures to follow if you are victimized, are clear and to the point. A review of cybercrime laws, victim experiences, and the psyche of perpetrator motivation make this type of book, which could be otherwise boring, very interesting!

This book is a MUST HAVE for computer rookies, experts, high school students, and every Mom in America, including mine!

Title: one less victim
AUTHOR: Doug setter
The news today is filled with stories of horrible crimes inflicted on innocent victims. It can often seem hopeless to honest people who feel defenseless against the endless wave of crime. But it is not so hopeless if we can avoid appearing as a victim to begin with.

"One Less Victim" is a detailed guide to personal safety that covers almost every potential pitfall to victimization, from physical dangers, to Internet scams. Doug Setter educates the reader on avoiding dangerous situations, not appearing as a target, and the power and responsibility of the victim to report the crime. He uses many titles and subtitles for clarity that cover an amazingly broad spectrum of dangerous situations. It is guaranteed that the average reader will find some valuable and enlightening information here.

Doug Setter has a comfortable, streetwise style of writing, allowing anyone to easily access the information in his book. He uses many necessary references, an important ingredient in this sort of self-help book. It does not, however, read like a research project, which makes a great deal of sense when considering the diversity of people the author wants to reach.

Doug Setter has the ideal background to write a book with a straight-forward, streetwise approach to personal crime prevention. He has worked as a crime writer for a Vancouver newspaper, and as an infantry sergeant for the United Nations peacekeepers. He has studied self-defense for 20 years and has been published in several Canadian newspapers.

This book would make a great gift for many, from the new college student leaving home for the first time, to the single senior citizen. It is a very useful book that may very well save the reader from some very unpleasant situation.

Rebeccasreads highly recommends ONE LESS VICTIM for all city residents & all school attendees, to discover how to "know thine enemy" & not become prey to criminals & bottom feeders, whether it's rapists or conmen; gangs or muggers.

ONE LESS VICTIM is a no-nonsense pocket book which tells it like it is. No flowery or foul language. Just the facts, information, anecdotes & advice the author has gleaned along the way as a Vancouver newspaper crime columnist, a self-defense master, a welter weight kick-boxer, & an infantry sergeant for United Nations peacekeeping operations.

If you know someone who is going to live in a new city or neighborhood, do them a favor & give them a copy of ONE LESS VICTIM.
If you know someone who's going to college for the first time or a new school, pack a copy of ONE LESS VICTIM in their bag.
If you know someone is getting old & living alone, get a copy of ONE LESS VICTIM, & read it with them. Because sooner or later, you, or they, are going to face any one of the situations given, & what you've learnt from this slim volume could save your bacon, not to mention your money, your sanity & your health.

Living in East Vancouver, I have frequently witnessed a considerable amount of what Doug Setter has written out in this book. He explains how to recognize dangers and danger areas, and how to avoid them as well. This book helps clear a lot of naivety and demonstrates how YOU can become ONE LESS VICTIM without relying on paranoia and sensationalism, just on hard-earned truths and stunning true life examples.
This is a highly recommended book for all walks of life to read. The difference between a victim and a survivor is how to read the signs of impending dangers and learning how to avoid these potentially life threatening problems. Whether you live on the tough side of town or in the prissy end, this book covers every possible angle of those that are set out to harm you and your family, and it is guaranteed to cover ones that you have never even thought of. ONE LESS VICTIM will help ensure that you will never have to be one of those people that say "I knew I shouldn't have....." from the hospital bed... if they have the chance to say it at all.

The Panic-Proof Parent is an exceptional resource for parents. Compared with any other book about child safety, Debra Holtzman has done an unprecedented job researching all the details that parents need to know, and she presents the information in a clear, concise, and effective way. This is not a simple repeat of the basic information you can find everywhere. It is an extremely thoughtful piece of work that reflects both her educational training as well as her deep caring about children. In an effort to thoughtfully address the safety needs of my family, I have looked through countless books on the subject. If I had it to do all over again, I need only have purchased one book - this book.

If you read only one book on parenting ever, this is without a doubt the book you should read. Let's face it, your kids will be fine if you do not pick the perfect baby-mobile for them (as is the sort of topic included in most parenting books). However, it is too often that we see children severely injured or even killed because parents, intelligent and educated parents, were not made aware of the often quite simple safeguards that must be in place for our children to stay healthy and safe. As the mother of two very busy boys, I have found it overwhelming to think of every possible danger my boys may encounter. The news reports of children choking to death on everyday foods or strangling themselves with household items jolts our attention. We make the simple adjustments to safegauard our children from those particular hazards. However, most parents do not have the time to think of every possible danger or the information needed to keep our kids safe from them. Debra Smiley Holtzman has done this for us and done it well. Ms. Holtzman has tackled a huge amount of information and made it all easy to read, easy to retain and easy to implement. This is the most important parenting book I have read and I have read many.

Did you know that you should never give honey to a baby under the age of one year? Or that lead may be present in your drinking water? How about the fact that you should make sure your water heater thermostat should be set at 120 degrees Fahrenheit or lower? If any of these items comes as a surprise to you, then you need the "Panic-Proof Parent."

Chock full of information that will help you create a safe lifestyle for your family, this book is one you should not be without. I was amazed to read about how many every day dangers are lurking in my house, car, in the air, and even in the food I feed my family.

I have read other safety books, but no other book is so comprehensive and well organized. The chapters are broken into a logical format, starting with recommendations that expectant mothers should do to guard their fetus.

Drinking water, pesticides, babyproofing, preventing burns, and pool safety are just a few of the crucial chapters that you will pour over when you get your hands on this terrific book.

Every parent worries about their children (it comes with the blessing) and some things are out of a parents hands. However, there are many precautions that you can take if you're armed with the appropriate information. This book will help empower you to do what you can to help ensure a happy, healthy environment for you and your loved ones!

A must for all parents!

I love this book! Maintaining proper alignment, and therefore helping to prevent injuries, and chronic pain, is so much more important than mere aesthetics. Anyone who has suffered an injury that affects one's mobility can attest to this. This book will show you how to keep your body healthy and well-aligned, for long-term health. She writes in an exceptionally clear fashion as well, and the way she explains how your body is supposed to move is brilliant easy to understand. Fantastic. I hope she writes another book, she's very dynamic.

I was intrigued by Jennifer Rhodes' book, Peak Performane Fitness, because she emphasizes fitness without injury or strain. After reading through Jennifer's book, I now understand why my attempts to improve my health through exercise have failed. I have developed a beginners program using the guidelines in her book. My focus is on improving my overall posture, along with cardiovascular exercise. In partiular, I highly recommend the foam roll referred to in Chapter 4 for spinal alignment. Jennifer has the knowledge and experience to provide good tools for exercise without injury and the suggested exercises with illustrations make it simple for one to follow. I am now looking forward to an ACTIVE retirement.

I am a 32 year old guy. I've been playing soccer, tennis, and golf almost all of my life. Over the past three years though, I've been plagued by recurring injuries to my knees and shoulders. I assumed my body was simply weakening with age, and couldn't take the blows like it used to. Luckily, I found Peak Performance Fitness before I put myself out to pasture! This easy to read book explained how my pain was actually due to years of "microtrauma"- continual irritations caused by poor alignment of my body causing me to torque and stress my muscles and joints in ways they just weren't meant to take. Clear illustrations gave me an understanding of how my body can and should work in harmony, with small changes in my lifestyle and exercise regimen. The book stepped me through the crafting of a workout, custom made to strengthen and realign my trouble spots. Within a few weeks, I could already feel my power and confidence improving. Ms Rhodes's book is an essential read for anyone who wants to keep their body working efficiently and looking and feeling great.

I am a family nurse practitioner. I found the book to be very clear and comprehensive. If you're male and over 40, this is required reading!

The most important book you many ever read....

This book could very easily save your life. While it reaffirmed things I know about fiber, insulin, and exercise, it gave me a lot of new information about how to keep from getting prostate cancer (like my father had), and other important information. It also described "insulin resistance", which is something that I have and has baffeled my doctor for well over a year! Dr. Bob, thanks for writing this great book.

This is a serious step in the right direction to minimize the possibility of developing Prostate Cancer. Many volumes have been written on dealing with the disease after detection but nothing notable of taking preventive measures. This should be must reading for every man!

Great on nutrition but biased & simplistic re: surgery

This book is entertainingly and enthusiastically written and gives excellent information on how to eat to avoid prostate cancer or counteract prostate cancer--help slow or stop its growth--once you have it. I was apalled, however, at how Arnot started his chapter on "surgery," describing two groups of couples in which the men had prostate cancer. The one, happy giggling group was composed of couples where the decision was to "watch and wait" regarding the prostate cancer--in other words, not have radiation or surgery for the present. In the other group, the men had had surgery within the previous year and "These men appeared morose, even depressed. Many complained of the need to wear diapers. Months after the operation, many no longer had any sex life at all."

This picture is biased, black-and-white, unrealistic and I beleive cruel to people who are trying to decide what to do about prostate cancer. Surgery IS the gold standard treatment for younger men with cancer detected early--men who might die prematurely and very painfully if they did not have surgery, which has a better than 90 percent chance of curing them. And certainly men like Bob Dole, General Schwarzkopf and thousands of others who had surgery are not morose and feeling as if their lives are over--in fact they probably feel a lot better than the 30 percent of those who watch and wait and after ten years have cancer spreading throughout their bodies.

People have to make their choices as best they can, and both watchful waiting and surgery can be appropriate. Arnot's description painting surgery as totally black was neither good journalism nor good medicine, and as the wife of a 59-year-old-man who will probably have surgery, I did not appreciate the depiction. Less than 8 percent (some say 2 pwercent) of men wear diapers after recovery from surgery and all who have surgery are certainly NOT MOROSE compare to all who wait being giddy and happy. For the fifty to thirty percent who cannot have natural erections, there are several good alternatives that will make the penis errect--and the nerves that cost erections DO NOT hinder sensation or orgasm in anyone--men may not get errect but they can feel and have orgasms! Many people take the lemons of this experience and the surgery and make lemonade, glad to be alive and have a chance at a cure. Making a blanket and untrue statement that suggest surgery leads to moroseness is neither helpful, accurate or true. The next edition of this otherwise very good book should correct that.

It's been about 12 weeks since I've had my last cigarette! I think it's probably because this book considers my emotional attachment to cigarettes (which most books don't).

It worked!

Almost 11 months quit! The most helpful parts, for me, dealt with the mental and emotional sides of addiction. I smoked to avoid feeling stress or unwanted emotions, and this book has a lot to offer in that area.

I had little to no willpower when it comes to cigarette smoking but luckily, I didn't need any to quit with this program. I just had to practice not smoking, but I never felt deprived because I only had 4 practice sessions a day which only lasted a couple of minutes to a half hour max. So the exercises helped alot, especially the ones which taught me how to deal with my stress without cigarettes.

If you want to quit smoking, buy this book.

This is a no nonsense book of some very devious people who were outlaws in morotcycle gangs serving self and their evil ways selling drugs, getting high, beating up people and just being real bad keeping up with the outlaw biker image. You'll learn of the gang initiations and the brutal nature of the biker gang if you upset them. Most were filled with an angry rage ready to unleash at any moment of provocation, which they did so frequently. Jail, prison, theft, hatred is just some of the personal anguish they experienced. Suddenly, these hard-core bikers come to an end point of total frustration and failure, even sickness and are saved by God, Jesus Christ, and tell about their rotten lives without God and how wonderful life is with the Lord. These men and women (and the girls were tough bikers, too) tell it all in a personal interview format. This is no small book and the cover and paper is of high gloss quality. If you want to know about bad people living in a bad life then this book can bring you face to face with these outlaw bikers who are now living for the Lord and are happy tell you their story! There are dozens of motorcycle pictures in this book with photos of the gang members and 263 pages of very interesting true crime reading. There are pages that reveal cruel tortures, so it's not a book for children. These are true stories by those who have commited crimes while operating inside the dark world of the outlaw biker lifestyle.

Superb and Powerful

Remsberg's powerful and intimate photographs imbue his subjects with a dignity too often missing from studies of people living at the margins of society. Though Riders for God is worth the price for the photos alone (the Blessing of the Bikes is brilliant), it is much more than an art book. Remsberg elicits from his subjects the startling truths that belie the easy stereotypes conjured by the notion of Christian bikers. I found the powerful stories of redemption gripping and utterly unexpected. Rather than masking or exploiting their interior lives, Remsberg's photographs reveal. Remsberg's patience and gently prodding curiosity make him a wonderful guide connecting the reader with people generally regarded as marginal or simple. While he remains an outsider to the gang, he clearly gains their respect along with their candor.

Absorbing read!

This finely crafted book offers a fascinating look at a world that is doubly obscure: the mind-set and lifestyle of outlaw bikers and the world of religious extremists. Remsberg's photos are mesmerizing. And his text, which reveals these unique bikers in their own words, is equally compelling. Anyone with curiosity about human nature will be engrossed from the first page on.

This book takes an uncompromising view of people who simultaneously live at two extremes of society--the wildly liberal, almost anarchistic side, and the deeply religious. The photography is stunning in its ability to cut through what I would normally notice about a man or woman decked in leathers on a motorcycle--features such as hands (particularly hands,) faces, postures, etc. are brought to the surface by this talented documentary photographer. This is a book which will surprise and absorb anyone who pulls it off the shelf in your home.

This book gives a new perspective on the inner lives of motorcycle gangs and bikers. Excellent photographs coupled with first-person interviews give the reader an in-depth view of bikers who have given up the violent life for a shot at spiritual redemption. Remsberg talks to all kinds of 'scary' people and shows us their humanity. A great read.
