Excellent work book!!!! for CST Preparation

Review Date: 2007-05-13

I think it is a great book for your 5th grader to practice on as a way of gaining language and math skills and confidence to perform well on the CST exam.

I believe that this book was much better written than the other book I had purchased called "California Spectrum". I liked the clarity in both the content and format of this California Test Practice book. The practice book covers all the reading and math concepts for grade 5. There are numerous practice exercies along with mini tests and answer keys.

This book, or should I say this manual, is really important and helpful. I am a Ph.D student and I know exactly what it does mean to have a manual like this in schools. The manual gives you a chance to evaluate your students with special needs. Additionally, the manual follows the new trends in assessment and evaluation process through linking the assessment results with educational or intervention purposes. By using the Assessment Log and the Developmental Progress Chart, you, as a teacher, can link the ongoing assessment information with the IEP information for your students.
This manual will help you understand the developmental level and deviance for your students, as well as how to plan for age appropriate and functional interventions.
Thanks Amazon for the wonderful book.

Review of the book 'The Challenge of Scientometrics (2nd ed)

Review Date: 2001-05-25
With unlimited growth of the knowledge enterprise, Science & Technology (S&T) studies assume increasing importance. It is now established that scientific developments and the enterprise of knowledge production is amenable to measurement. Scientometrics instruments provide vital inputs for the growth and development of Science & Technology both directly and by enabling S&T policies. The study of S& T requires a multidisciplinary approach, encompassing diverse subjects like mathematics, philosophy, sociology, history, etc. This multidisciplinary communication process is multi-layered, each layer having its own dynamics. A systematic and broad-based approach is required to understand the structure and dynamics of the knowledge domain of the subject specialties. Dr.Loet Leydesdorff of the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR), University of Amsterdam has made significant contribution to the studies of Science,Technology and innovation. His multidisciplinary training (a scientist of considerable standing and a philosopher of science) is his added advantage to move effortlessly into different subject areas and get the best out of the diversity. His long and extensive research experience in the subject also has contributed immensely in giving shape to the book. The first edition of this book was published by DSWO Press of Leiden University in the year 1995. It was a popular one. The book was translated into Japanese and published by Tamagawa University Press. The present edition (2nd) is an extended version which have been thoroughly revised, updated and improved. A new chapter on firm behavior and institutional agency has been added. Both theory and methodology are discussed in depth with examples and citations. The presentation is simple and easy to understand. The book runs into 344 pages and these are spread over 13 chapters organized in three parts. Part I deals with Theoretical perspectives on scientometrics Part II deals with Methodological Studies, and Part III discusses Communication, Probabilistic entropy and Self-Organization. The subjects are distributed among the following chapters: - Scientometrics and the Sociology of Scientific Knowledge - The intellectual Organization of the Sciences, - The methodological Priority of Textual data, - Full Text Analysis of Scientific articles, - From Words and Co-words to Information and Probabilistic Entropy, - The Static Model, - Modelling the Dynamics of Scientific developments, - The Static and Dynamic Analysis of Network data, - Irreversibilities in Science & Technology networks, - The Impact of European Commission Policies of the Transnational Publication System, - Knowledge Representation, Bayesian Inferences, and Empirical Science Studies, - The Possibility of a Mathematical Sociology of Scientific Communications.

By writing the book the author has done a commendable job. He has covered all relevant topics. This book will be a very useful reference guide for researchers, teachers and policy analysts, particularly to those who are doing studies on Science & Technology. Scientometrics is a comparatively new discipline. With the rapid explosion of information the requirement and relevance of scientometrics studies are increasing. The book will help immensely to popularize Scientometrics and understand the depth and importance of the subject.

This important book rightly deserves wide readership. I have no hesitation in giving five star (*****) rating to the book.

Louise Bates Ames give a wonderful detail of the traits we can expect from our toddlers through 10 year olds as their personalities develope with their complex minds. as they change into ten year olds. The characteristics she descibes in this book are extremely beneficial insights into the young minds we are in charge of forming. The benefit of this insight is very helpful for the new and seasoned parent as it gives answers to what to expect and many helpful suggestions for what to do to get the responses we are lookng for in our children. Her study of children's traits is extensive and complete with useful examples of actions to be taken and reactions not to use. I highly recommend this book to all parents.

Why Reading Tests Can Never Tell You Much About Children
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-02
If you think standardized test questions are fair, reasonable, non-biased, and an accurate assessment of children's reading ability, then take a look at this book. Even if you don't think test questions are fair, reasonable, non-biased, and an accurate assessment of children's reading ability, you should read this book. It will knock your socks off.

Using methods of discourse analysis, the authors examine not only representative material from reading tests but also children's responses to that material. In short, they talk to children about why they chose the answers they did, and suddenly the reader is made aware of how biased toward an adult perspective the reading tests are. We see how convincing children's "wrong" answers are.

The book is particularly attentive to the role of culture in shaping children's understanding of what they read.

Besides all this, the authors' style is straightforward and easy going.
