It is a good book with clear illustration of the statistics. It begin with simple statistics and then move on to more difficult analysis. Before I get this book, whenever I pick up a book about statistics, I feel fate. Then I close it immediately after reading 1 to 2 pages, and never pick it up again. However, for this particular book, I've read more than half (about 300 pages)and still want to finish it. After you've read one page, you are eager to read another and another. So, I highly recommend this book to undergradaute and postgraduate students.

An invaluable resource
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-05-12
The 3rd edition of this book starts off with an anecdotal story that clearly demonstrates Rick Stiggins philosophy and practical understanding of student-involved and classroom-based assessment practices. Throughout the book, he makes reference to this story as he explores it's meaning and implications. The first four chapters and the two main organizational charts are the essence of the book. The rest is there for educators to explore as they need it. I have used this book with several hundred preservice teachers and many, many inservice teachers. On it's own, it can look daunting, but taken in small bits, and discussed, thought about, tried out, it is a wonderful resource for any educator truly interested in UNDERSTANDING why student involvement in assessment and evaluation does make a major (and measureable) difference in student work and then actually IMPLEMENTING it in a classroom.

Stiggins presents a realistic view of quality assessment

Stiggins present a down to earth view of creating quality assessment procedures within the classroom setting. His understanding of students, teachers, and the interaction between assessment and the learning process make this a must read for all teachers of students of any age and ability.

This Guide Will Help You Tame "The Beast"

Whether you are a graduate student, intern, novice clinician,or a veteran, you know from experience that the DSM-IV-TR is a beast of a book in terms of navigation.

Dr. Fauman has provided a cogent guide to help you tame this beast. What I find most helpful are the clinical vignettes and the way he attempts to tease out over-lapping, and/or mutually exclusive diagnoses. I am using this book (by recommendation) to review for my state's counselor license exam as I was told that this resource would provide more than adequate assistance for this purpose.

The only downside to this text is the price. APA books are just plain bloody expensive, but like anything else, you get what you pay for. The information contained in this book while a tad overpriced, will be worth it in the long-run, I feel.

Invaluable resource in learning the DSM-IV-TR
Helpful Votes: 37 out of 38 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-12
I bought this book as a study aid to assist me in preparing for my counseling licensure exam. I own the DSM-IV-TR but found that it was difficult for me to learn with it because it was so technical. The study guide breaks the diagnoses down into simpler descriptions, gives case examples of clients with the various disorders, and provides study questions to help you evaluate your progress in learning. It goes over important definitions, key diagnostic points and how to make a differential diagnosis. Since using this to study, my confidence in making a diagnosis has increased greatly. I highly recommend this book to any clinician or graduate student.

I have been in elementary education for over 4 years and find this book to be indispensable in creating, choosing and evaluating assessment tools for my classroom. This book is expertly written in an easy-to-read format and the authors present the information with hands-on activities and examples. It goes through the basic types of test questions and helps the reader analyze the effectiveness of those items. It made me take a good, hard look at the assessments I use - I recommend this book to parents, test preparers, teachers, and administrators. Definitely a book that won't sit on the shelf!

Excellent Book for Teachers

"Test Development" is an great book for teachers who want to develop tests to accurately measure their student's achievement. Even as a teacher with over 30 years of experience, I picked up a number of good tips. The authors have done a terrific job presenting information in easy-to-understand language complimented by dozens of illustrations and examples.

Each chapter ends with review questions and exercises to reinforce learning. I found the section at the back of the book especially helpful. The authors provided many different examples of test items from several curriculum areas.

I would recommend this book for pre-service teachers, those new to the field and veterans who have made teaching their career, who would like to learn the ways to preparing the best possible exam for their students. It's a perfect addition to any teacher's resource bookshelf.

How to take a test, Part I
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-16
Ok, one day in elementary school you had your first test. It was only a few questions and the material was easy; but what do you do? Now, I know that the teacher mentioned she wanted you to study the material--but how?

You evolve, and are now a High School student. You have learned that studying is just re-reading the material and doing a few random questions in the chapter reviews. You are doing ok; you have very few complaints about your grades. Ok, maybe one or two.

Now, do you drive across states before taking the class? No. Do you program computers before learning how to type? No. However, you study for a test before you understand what studying really is---How crazy!

Test Taking Strategies was designed to help students study effectively by teaching them how to study properly and effectively in any time frame. This short, compact, and easy-to-read book will help any and every student learn to study correctly and shave hours off thier study time.

I used this book as I was studying for my Network+ certification; at this point, I now have my certification and I am glad I purchased this book (for me, an earlier edition was only $10). This book taught me study techniques as well as test-taking strategies. I was impressed with the simplicity and brevity of the material in the book. Not just a "before you take this test" handout; Test Taking Strategies is a comprehensive manual that will show you how to study.

IMHO, this book is worth triple the price easily!

I am currently studying to become an elementary school teacher, and I devoured this book!

It is honest and inspiring, as well as intelligently and humourously written!

Selma's love for children and for learning really shows through. I was inspired to learn that school does not have to be dull and repetitive. I have gained new appreciation for the courage it takes to 'teach outside the box'.

It has made me so excited about teaching.

Thank you, Selma!
