None of those really worked.
Until I stumbled upon RocketReview. Everything in this book was SO USEFUL and fun to read too (it reads like a story that the author is narrating, not a boring textbook), with practice problems along the way, crucial tips, and an interactive CD.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK...if you are skeptical, just look for it at the library or something and read a chapter. The study tips are strange at first, but once you read his explanations into why they work--BAM. You understand how to not only take a test, but do math problems the easy way without all those complex calculations, save A LOT OF TIME on those long boring reading passages, etc.
I spent about 8 months trying to raise my SAT and took many practice tests. I had reached a plateau at around 2050-2070, and my parents were disappointed. I googled SAT prep books and bought this book and in just a month of studying over the summer (just reading the book, about an hour each day and doing everything it told me too--not very difficult), I raised my SAT score which I took in October by ***100 points*** which puts me in the range of all the colleges I am applying to as a senior now (Ivy Leage-level, etc). Before, I thought the Critical Reading section was IMPOSSIBLE. After reading this book, I found it to be really straightforward, pretty easy, and sometimes fun.

Jennings cites numerous companies who have carved out success while still remaining true to their customers, their employees and their values.
Not surprisingly, few of these companies are ones that so called pundits regularly review.
As the other reviews have noted, these companies are very successful financially, but they get there by asking the really pertinent business questions, and not by hiding behind an air of executive invulnerability. The leaders are real leaders, more focused on growing the company, serving customers, and doing right by employees.
What vividly differentiates these companies from the "name brands," is that in the "name" companies, executives are more concerned with their own compensation, preserving their own existence, and with profits at all costs, than long term success.
The questions you should ask yourself after reading this book are, "Where have all the leaders gone?" and "Why don't all companies follow many of Jennings' researched best practices?
After that, I would run, not walk, to one of these companies and see if you can start at the bottom and learn what it's like to work in a real company.

Business magazines often glorify top executives by telling about the grand strategic plan behind the success. This little book shows us a different story. It provides insight to the many seemingly small traits of the lean culture that only works because they taken serious by the organization and used in combination. These are the 11 traits required for the leader of a highly productive enterprise: attention to detail, high moral fiber, embracing simplicity, competitiveness, long-term focus, disdain for waste, coach leadership, humility, rejection of bureaucracy, belief in others, and trust.
I'm sure you're really not impressed of this list. Neither am I. But try challenging some of the advice. Humility? When was the last time you saw a big company using this as a standard. When you hear the story of many head offices visited in this book, you'll understand humility. Often you'll find a very simple and humble office building for a huge company. No art on the walls! No lavish entrance hall! In these companies, you don't find huge corporate staff creating immense bureaucracy and all sorts of information requirements from their operating companies or business units. These organizations do actually "walk-the-talk" on lean - unlike many fad-driven major firms who's paying lip service to a lean culture.
PERSISTENCE is a word missing from the 11 traits, though attention to detail and long-term focus do include some of it. They never lose sight of their BIG idea or focus. It includes their performance measurement. "Everyone who works for SRC gathers once a week in their respective lunchrooms and takes part in a review of the business's financial performance for the previous week. By DOING IT WEEK IN WEEK-OUT FOR MANY YEARS the exercise has also become a system".
Okay, I'm sure that the book's research on productivity could have been better. And some of the firms reported on may experience difficulties, though most are still flourishing. But don't read this book for the hard stuff. Read the soft issues that over time usually turn out to be the hardest to beat.
I agree that it resembles "In Search of Excellence" to some degree, but remember that this book is on the lean culture of Cost Leadership firms (my interpretation, not the author's).

The theme of this book speaks volumes about the importance of replacing fear with a supporting environment if you want to get transformational benefits from a performance measurement system. And, it is easy to agree with the author when he says, "When performance measurement is done the way advocated in this book, the organization itself and the people within it will be impacted positively." If your performance management system is using measurement primarily as a reward and punishment tool, this book will be a valuable read.
I very much liked what Spitzer had to say in this book; unfortunately I did not very much like reading it. Distracting from the impact of such a powerful theme is the redundancy contained within the chapters and the extent to which the author bolsters his argument with quotes and references from others - the book contains more than 250 notes (more than one quote per page on average) and shows a bibliography of 220 books or articles. Written as a 100 page how-to manual on the development and management of a performance measurement system this should be a best seller.

Joyce Pavao, herself adopted, encourages the reader to look at adoption from all perspectives. She shows us that understanding the important connections that exists between birth family, adoptive family and adoptee is essential to appreciating the complex emotions that accompany these bonds. Her careful explanations helped me to understand that although our daughter's birthmother is half a world away, she has always been a very real part of our family. Pavao uses poignant examples, selected from her years a therapist, to illustrate how adoption effects all members of the triad. Her use of real life scenarios brings much needed clarity to some very complicated concepts and makes this book very readable.
Included in the chapters devoted to the adoptee at various ages, is useful advise on how to talk to your child about adoption in age appropriate ways. She also gives simple, understandable advise for parents to help their children process information and feelings in different ways at different developmental stages. She helps the reader understand how each new developmental stage presents a unique set of challenges for the adopted person and how some seemingly troubling behaviors can result.
In The Family of Adoption, Pavao presents a very complex subject in a very straight forward and understandable way. She also provides useful and practical advise in a book that that is ultimately informative and very readable.

In general, he shows that measuring associated costs and other phenomena that affect the decision-making process is not that big a deal once you are able to define the aspects that you feel affect your processes and also determine the context in which these aspects are important to you, as a manager.
However,as an accountant, I find that it does not address the issue of intangibles from my perspective. How does the accountant measure physical intangibles that are not accounted for on the books, but that clearly affect the market value of the company? Intangibles like R&D, intellectual property and internally developed software should be accounted for but are not for lack of a dependable method of measurement. The book doesnt provide an answer to this question, so if you are an accountant looking to measure an intangible for purposes of reporting them, this book will not provide an answer, but if you are a manager or just someone who likes placing a value on the happenings that you find interesting, go for it. You will not be disappointed.

Doug Hubbard has written an entire book about capturing quantitative judgments. His approach differs from the usual decision analysis process. In a conventional analysis, we assume that that a subject matter expert (SME) can be identified for each key variable. Then, a skilled interviewer carefully elicits the SME's judgment through an interview process.
Hubbard takes a different approach. People familiar with the type project are assembled and given calibration training. Becoming calibrated might take perhaps a half-day of practice exercises and feedback. Basically, being "calibrated" means that one can consistently provide judgments of 90% confidence intervals that avoid the "overconfidence" bias. The book provides several example quizzes for the reader to self-assess.
Even though I was well-aware of the overconfidence bias, I still performed poorly on the self-assessment tests (history was never my strong subject!). Of course, the questions for a technical group would be crafted from topics within the area of interest. Whether (a) expert in the quiz subject matter or not and (b) being told in advance that people tend to be overconfident about the quality of their knowledge doesn't seem to affect the overconfident bias. Practice and feedback are the antidotes.
Hubbard's training and consulting examples are engaging. It has been years since I've devoured a technical book so thoroughly. While the reader will pick-and-choose methods of most interest, the "measurement" topic is well-covered.
The book contains many shortcuts and heuristics for rapid problem-solving. Many people never attempt to quantify intangibles. Yet, most people with some modest training are able to provide credible judgments in quantitative form.
A sampling of topics includes:
* Modeling and Monte Carlo simulation
* Designing experiments for measurement
* Decomposition
* Heuristics for obtaining simple statistics
* Value of perfect information, for screening which variables are worthwhile measuring
* Bayes' rule (because we almost always have some prior information about the subject of the observation)
* Cognitive biases
How to Measure Anything is well-written and carefully edited. The companion Web site, [...], offers additional calibration questions, several calculation spreadsheets, and additional information.
Persons reading this book will be the better for it.

Two years back I had handed over around 25 SCADA projects to respective maintenance teams. I wish I could include this guide in the 'Hand-Over list' to the guys who are responsible to keep the huge plants running 24x7. As of now, I am going to call them up personally and recommend this work.
While discussing the advantages of this book, Somebody argued that all this information and much more is already available on the internet, provided some body cares to search.
I replied to him in a one liner: 'When you need to put off fire, you dont start digging a well to fetch water'.
This book is THE source you can depend on, when you need it.
The text is pretty lucid, and the result is that the jargon terms appear natural to a reader. I strongly recommend this book to anybody who deals with Industrial Ethernet in any way.

The book consists of two main sections. The first section is devoted to storm chasing, divided up into chapters about saftey, methodology, forcasting (this chapter will only make you want to purchase Tim's other book, which is devoted entirely to forcasting), and equipment. The second section is more or less a list of interesting things to do and places to see when waiting for something interesting to happen happen in the sky. This may seem like something that would be intuitive, but wait until it's you who're stuck out in the middle of rural Kansas at 10AM waiting for the cap to break. Tim even gives you GPS coordinates, so you can't loose.
Almost any chaser even half-way involved in chasing has heard of Tim Vasquez. He's had tons of experience with both chasing and writing -- many years ago, he published a regular little rag called "Storm Track", which was a perodic newsletter/magazine. Eventually, stormtrack moved to the internet ... . It was always a great source for chaser info.
I'd reccomend this book to anyone who is thinking of getting into chasing, and for a lot of people who already are. Chasing is one of those hobbies in which knowing more not only increases your success, it decreases the odds that you'll get yourself killed or, worse, kill someone else. This book gives you a lot of good information in a very understandable format.
