"reference" books I've ever purchased!
An Essential GuideReview Date: 2006-10-22
The book consists of several chapters, each devoted to a particular industry. Within those chapters, the industry is explained in terms of getting the raw materials and shipping the finished products. This helps to design realistic layouts. Each chapter has a bit of space devoted to the types of rolling stock used by each industry and further explains the changes that occurred over historical time.
The Chapter are organized thus:
Grain: Grain elevators, flour and feed mills, rail operations.
Petroleum: Modeling oil refineries and fuel dealers
Coal Mining: shaft mines, open pit mines and railroad coal operations
Automotive: Manufacturing plants, transloading centers and auto parts traffic
Produce: Packing houses, produce markets and refrigerator car traffic
Livestock: Modeling stockyards, packing companies and branch houses
Each of these chapters is well written and organized. I am very happy to learn that another volume is on its way.

Outstanding ReferenceReview Date: 2002-10-08
Sadly, there's a minor but signifiant error on page 126, the article on that page was cut out half and wasn't finished. There's also some errors on the airlines section, which some photos and the caption are not correct. Despite of those mistakes, it was not reduce the value of this book.
I also have the successor of this book (ISBN 0760311250), but it was quite dissapointing. I hope that the next edition will reverted into this format again.

An instructor's perspective...Review Date: 2006-03-14
This is probably the BEST text on this subject I have seen; so much so that I plan to look into their other books. Running the gamut from cold appetizers to a primer on ice sculpting to a discussion of centerpiece carving, this book provides clear concise examples of each process. The full color pictures are fantastic and a welcome addition to the instructions provided. If I was teaching again, this would be my textbook of choice.

How business should be done!Review Date: 2007-11-26
After a couple of weeks, we went to a local church to visit, and the most pleasant woman came up to us and greeted us. She was kind and charming, and was one of the very few that morning that truly made us feel welcome. She was Barbara Green.
At the time, we did not know that the Green's were the owners of Hobby Lobby. We learned later what you get a great sense of in this book. David and Barbara Green are genuine, good folks. Everything that Mr. Green espouses in his book is true, and he actually does live what he believes.
It is refreshing to read a book that goes against the grain of the cut-throat retail business and the politically correct landscape of America today. I enjoyed reading "Not Just a Hobby" very much, and did so in an afternoon. The book is very engaging and well written, in my opinion, and is just like sitting across the table from Mr. Green as he reminisces about his past and the lessons that he learned along the way. As a bonus, you get some sage advice for living, that you would do well to consider!
This book is good for anyone who likes to read a book where the good guy wins! I would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone with a teenager who will soon enter the job market. If everyone would set their goals as high as Mr. Green did, and as he expects his employees to do, it would be a greater pleasure to go shopping.
Thanks, David, for writing this book, it is an inspiration. God bless you also for being a father and grandfather of principle, and for building God's kingdom in ways no one will ever know about but Him.
More stores needed.....Review Date: 2006-03-19
Now, however, we are moving back to New Jersey and I am dismayed to learn that there is no Hobby Lobby even remotely close to my new home. I wrote to the Headquarters and found that they do not build new locations more than 1000 miles from their headquarter location. I know that the east coast would be a good market for the store and am hoping that they will take the chance and give to rest of the nation the opportunity to enjoy the Hobby Lobby experience.......
Inspiring!Review Date: 2005-08-18
I read the book in one sitting and since I wasn't expecting it to be an edge-of-the seat gripper, I enjoyed every page. Mostly I appreciated learning how it all came to be.
God bless David Green, his family and his business. Some people quietly choose to live their lives with real purpose and in so doing make a real difference in this world, others just make noises and spend their lives compromising. How refreshing to see that commerce can be ethical.
He's not the world's best writerReview Date: 2005-08-16
This book is pretty much a brief history of Hobby Lobby and Mr. Green's "Unorthodox" methods of business. If you are at all captivated by the workings of the retail world, this would be a descent read. If you frequently browse the aisles of Hobby Lobby and the book caught your eye, you MIGHT be able to read it all.
I am far from an avid reader, and really have no business critiquing a book but it's not very well written. Mr. Green often repeats himself and the company's history gets spread all over the book.
Ultimately - An employee of the company. A lover of the store. A "business world" fan. Buy it. Read it. Otherwise, proceed with caution.

Really OutstandingReview Date: 2008-02-10
I found the tone of the book to be simultaneously warm, engaging, authoritative, and personal in the sense that it is from the author's heart. There are many, many practical aspects to this which can be used to move to action - it is not just about ideas and theory, although I found plenty of that also.
I will occasionally read management books, but there is so much useless stuff out there that I really try to cherry pick the books which are worth my time. This was really outstanding and I'm betting it will be around for a long time in subsequent re-printings and new editions.
A must read!!!Review Date: 2008-02-09

Interesting portrait of Hollywood in the early-talkie yearsReview Date: 2003-04-02
This book chronicles Bernds's early years, from his first radio jobs through his successful association with director Frank Capra. Bernds was a stickler for accuracy, and drew upon his old diaries to confirm his excellent memory for facts and faces. He was just as careful to spell things out for the reader, explaining a technical process or a business practice to amplify the point he was making. Bernds's attention to detail makes for good, solid reading.
This writer was disappointed that the book stops when the author stopped working as a soundman. But it's understandable because Bernds, in his thoroughness, would have written a mammoth volume if his entire career were to be discussed. Joseph McBride recognizes the "missing" material by appending a more general interview with Bernds, conducted by McBride and Leonard Maltin.
Film buffs and historians will enjoy "Mr. Bernds." For those who want Bernds's observations and recollections of his Three Stooges years, read "The Columbia Comedy Shorts" by Ted Okuda and Edward Watz.
Behind-the-scenes Hollywood talent SHINES!Review Date: 1999-09-04
The book only covers the first half of his life, from his childhood in Chicago to his career as a top sound engineer at Columbia Studios. Bernds' engineering career encompassed the films of Frank Capra (Capra always requested Ed for his team), the many classics of Moe, Larry and Curly, and many major Columbia feature productions through 1945.
The reader is left wanting more, particularly the details of Bernds' new post-1945 career of writer and director for the Three Stooges, the Blondie series, the Bowery Boys and Elvis Presley. But, that's another book. Right, Ed?
A Wonderful Story of Early HollywoodReview Date: 1999-05-15
One of the reasons why this book is so fresh is that its author works not just from memory, but from detailed diaries. The tale of his trip west to Hollywood in a broken down jalopy fairly crackles. Genuinely good story telling accents this lively account of the early talkie era. Recommended to anyone who would enjoy a stroll through the inside of Hollywood, spoken by a real movie sound pioneer.

One of those books where you literally cannot help but laugh out loud!Review Date: 2008-01-25
Amusing quips find their way into almost every paragraph and the writer does an excellent job of really taking us inside life on the road. All of the experiences are there...the humorous, the painful, and the melancholy and all culminate into interesting stories within a book that is hard to put down. I read this on a plane from New York and surprised myself by laughing out loud...and often. Several other passengers asked me what I was reading and actually laughed with me when I read particular quotes to them.
This is my favorite part of the book that I just want to share...
"You can almost see trouble coming. There are two predictable problems on van tours. The first is being consistently late. When you arrive late, with your double latte and Egg McMuffin, everyone wishes they too had gone to get a double espresso drink and a bite to eat. But no, they came to the van on time and have had no coffee and no Egg McMuffin. You have made them wait. And they are empty-handed and hungry. They don't like you as much as they did last night. You have been inconsiderate this morning. You have been selfish. Suddenly they think you don't play as well as you did yesterday." -Susan Voelz
God as I am writing this I am laughing again and remembering how so many people on that plane enjoyed it too!
