The Great Brain is one of the best all time books for boys ever written. In my humble opinion of course. The prose is engaging capturing the attention. The stories are exciting and compelling. The chapters are just the right length. And it has all the elements that young boys love from Cowboys and Indians to cops and robbers. What more could you ask for?

But of course, looking back on my childhood as I place this book on the shelf for my own little boy, I realize that the moral lessons this book taught so covertly were lessons that stayed with me: tolerance for other cultures and religions, compassion for those less fortunate, love of family. These are foundational values and the Great Brain teaches them. And the thing is, as a young person, you don't realize you're getting a lesson, you just know you like the story.

This book is a wonderful protrait of 19th century rural America, but people should be aware that it was written at a time when there was much more freedom of speech than we have today. Topics in the book include suicide, religious intolerance and fear of immigrants. There is a scene where the boys go skinny dipping and also one story concerns John mating his dog, so this book probably should not be brought to a public elementary school for fear it might offend someone. Also there are no African-Americans in the book, and while the book does portray Jews, Moromons, Protestants and Catholics coexisting, there are no Muslims in this book, so it is not very politically correct. Also the "I" word is used casually and no mention is made of the plight of native Americans, except to say that they are the only non-immigrants in America. Women are displayed in subservient roles, always cooking, cleaning and taking care of the sick, although all the boys are portrayed as having chores. [...]

In the book The Great Brain written by John D. Fitzgerld was awesome! The book takes place in Adenville, Utah. There are some main characters this book, Tom (T.D) who is known as the great brain, Swyen (S, D) who is the eldest and acts mature, John (J, D) who is the youngest and is always up to something, Abie who is a store owner, and Mr. Standish who is the new school house teacher who everyone hates. Tom, John, and Swyen's father ordered a water closet, which is a bathroom, and they let people see it if they paid one cent. They made forty cents total. When Swyen got the measles, John was jells because he had never gotten sick first and then got to rub it in his brothers face. So one day John decided he wanted to get sick. John went over to his friend Howard who has had the mumps. So he decided to sneak into his house and started breathing in Howard's sick breath, and what do you know, John got sick. Abie had fainted once, twice, Abie died from malnutrition. They had a funeral for him that very day. Mr. Standish was the new school house teacher. Mr. Standish had paddled Tom for not being a tattletale, and Tom swore he would get back to Mr. Standish. So anways Swyen had gone to a Cathloic school in Salt Lake City so Swyen was gone and it was now just Tom and John. Andy their friend had stepped on a rusty nail and had not been able to return back to school. He ended up getting a prosthetic leg.

I learned that you should not lie for any purpose. Like when Tom found a way to get rid of Mr. Standish and when Tom's father asked if he had known anything to know about it and Tom never spoke a word intill his mamma made him tell. I also learned in this book that helping people is good. Like when Tom helped Basil get out of a fight, or when Tom helped Andy play baseball.

I recommend this book to someone who likes smart kids and funny stories. Like the time John wanted to get sick and he got the mumps. Why I think that the book is funny because it is all about fun and making life worth living.

The is a wonderfully, great, terrific book! They need to re-release the Great Brain movie from 1978 starring little Jimmy Osmond! Also, if I may suggest, try reading the Adventures With Boys book series-- Just as good!!!;)

I poured through these books continuously in my youth. I would beg for a trip to the library so I could find just one more I hadn't read.

I had all but forgotten about them until my oldest showed a keenness for reading. Now I'm ordering them for her for Christmas. I hope she gleans as much joy as I did from them! I used to love to pretend that Papa was handing out his sage advice directly to me.

This is such a wonderfully written series for young readers. You really can't go wrong with them, and hopefully my daughter will review this for you some time after Christmas!

If I could be a kid again, I would choose to be Calvin. Funny, smart, witty... just magical. Great work from Bill Watterson. A must

I simply have to laugh at folks who cannot appreciate Calvin. I have read Calvin & Hobbes for years, and have nearly everything (I'm pretty sure) that has been printed. I was concerned that this might be a reprint of material I already had--but it's not. It's EXCELLENT! Calvin is not a lonely child, he is industrious, imaginative, and actually very strong. Watterson captures the genius of that time in our lives when Mom & Dad were doing other things...be they reading newspapers or telling us to get outside and enjoy the day...and this didn't scar us. It's A Magical World wraps up the wonder of Calving & Hobbes. In fact, I have started giving these compilations to my nephews and nieces who are beginning to read...and they are LOVING them. Wapcaplet, you've got issues (I see you posted the very same complaint on other Calvin & Hobbes books!) Calvin doesn't have issues, just as we didn't have issues when we were children and stayed out way past dark riding bicycles miles from home (back when that was still safe).

I read and listened to my dad read "Calvin and Hobbes" comics to me as a kid so this comic strip has always had a special place in my heart. It' funny, it's smart, and generally anybody of any age can enjoy this comic series. I definitely recommend this book and the 10th anniversary book for anyone who loves or wants to try "Calvin and Hobbes."

This was written by the son of the person "love my kids". This hysterical book is really the best Calvin and Hobbs out there. In wrapping up his beloved comics characters, Watterson has included all the best aspects of Calvin and Hobbs, from close encounters with aliens as spaceman spiff, to the blissful and heartwarming ending of the entire strip, where Calvin and Hobbs, after Clavin proclaims "It's a magical world, Hobbs ol' buddy!" Set off in their sled toward the snowy winter horizon for future adventures in our imaginations. And whoever wrote "it's a depressing world", reach over and pull your boxers out of your buttcrack.

I love this book. Calvin and Hobbes have much to say about living and life. I keep a copy of this book around always. I think this is the best of the series.
The last couple pages are worth the price of purchase. A snowy hillside with Calvin and Hobbes on a sled looking down at an unmarked field of snow. I give this to friends who are moving on with their lives, as a hope for their future. "It's a magical world".

My almost eight year old grandson, who is not an avid reader, loves the Calvin and Hobbes books. His older sister knew that this would be a wonderful Christmas gift and she was right. His parents approved enthusiastically. Great choice for a school ager who's been so so about reading.!!

I love readding Calvin and Hobbes. Best cartoon from the newspaper and great books. What a great imagination the writer is.

An only, lonely child. Bullied at school. Clearly a genius level intellect, he's unchallenged and stifled since nobody, not his parents, and not even his teacher, recognizes this. A father who's always too busy to spend any time with his son. A father who's often seen, get this, reading --*reading* -- rather than paying his only son some attention! A mother, who literally, in strip after strip, throws him out the door. Throws, as in "child flying through the air". A child, and a small child at that, allowed repeatedly to wander alone through the woods! A child denied even a pet. His only friend -- a stuffed tiger.
Makes the "Peanuts" look like "The Family Circus".

The Calvin and Hobbes collection is filled with all the usual inventions and wild imagination as Calvin hurtles through the forest on his cart or sled, torments neighbor Suzie or drives his parents up the wall. The title comes from the hilarious serialised strips where Calvin's snowmen come alive and chase after him. It's absolutely a must-have, must-read!

And I DO believe that Hobbes comes alive when no one else is around.

I suppose this could apply to any Calvin and Hobbes collection (not just Attack of the Deranged..., but let me share my favorite way to read Calvin and Hobbes.

If possible, I like to pick a rainy Saturday or Sunday. I'm usually already bored and wandering around the cold house. I catch sight of a Calvin and Hobbes book and read a few pages, but my fingers are cold and I can't concentrate.

So I make a steaming cup of my favorite tea and a piece of toast with lots of butter, wrap up in a blanket on the couch, and sit and read straight through.

It's so comforting to listen to the rain and read Calvin and Hobbes. There's just something about it.

This is such a fun concept. Cross stitching seems inherently to be such a lady-like hobby, but these patterns are anything but lady-like. The book is very easy to understand, too; I hadn't cross stitched in about 10 years, but that was no problem.

All the women in my family are very creative and artsy, every single one of them, except me, I tried every craft that looked remotely interesting and not a one panned out for me. And then I found this book, and I fell in love. My grandmother had done cross stitching for as long as I can remember, but died before she had a chance to teach me. So now I finally have my craft, its perfect for a tattooed domestic goddess such as myself!

This books rocks my socks. I'm a novice cross stitcher and this book has some fun, basic designs you can make right away. It also has a great resource guide and other ideas to further you on your cross stitching career once you've got the basics. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to pick up cross stitching or those who are sick of stitching cutesy bunnies and flowers and such and are looking for something new and fun.

Subversive Cross Stitch makes a good gift for the cross-stitch enthusiast with a quirky sense of humor. The book includes patterns for cross-stitch projects with a twist, as well a helpful guide to making your own projects.

A word of caution, however, this book may not be appropriate for young viewers as it does contain some profanity. Otherwise, it's rollicking good fun!

Over all I'd give the material a 3, but if you like this guy's stuff then this is the purchase for you.

Beautiful Book! The binding and high quality of the paper and printing would have made Douglas proud... this is the way you should remember this extraordinary and hillarious set of books. I bought two copies for my daughter and myself. I'll be ordering more for Christmas presents - what a great gift for all of my slightly crazy friends.

Excellent printing and binding quality for the price. Looks like a treasured heirloom of classic literature. Most people who saw me reading this thought I was reading Shakespeare or a Bible until I told them what it was and gave them a closer look.

This is really a Deluxe Edition, love the perfect size of the font! Elegant cover and a touch of distinction on the golden edge of the pages. The only inconvenience is that's just too heavy to carrying it on your handbag all day long, but a book like this, you should keep it at home!

Excellent book, looks amazing and a great read. Only problem was the packaging scratched some of the leather.

I bought Where the Sidewalk Ends for my boys when they were little.We had so much fun reading,laughing and talking about all the fabulous poems and drawings.My boys have passed Shel's books on to their children.I have bought so many copies of Where the Sidewalk Ends,as a gift for a new baby.I always get lots of smiles from the new parents.It's a great way to start baby's library.Little kids and adults alike love this book!Shel may be gone, but his genius lives on in his heart warming books and illustrations!

I love the poems and would walk around reading them to whoever would listen. It helped me a lot, as I had learning disabilities. Shel Silversteins rhymes are delightful. I bought copies to give to friend's children...

This is one of the many great poetry books Shel Silverstein wrote. If you love amusing books and you love poetry then you'll love Where The Side Walks Ends. There are humorous long poems like Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take The Garbage Out or short ones like warning or hat. If you want to hear more terrific poems you'll have to read it. It's a good one I promise.
Shel Silverstein wants us to laugh and have fun. Don't be up tight be able to laugh your head off. It's on our 4th grade class's top ten because the poems are hilariously funny. I'm sure you'll agree when you read it.

Lately I have been purchasing books for my 9 month old baby. I want her to enjoy reading as much as I do, and have been collecting books that I loved growing up. As soon as I saw this book, I knew I had to have it. She is still a little young to truly appreciate it, but I am having a blast reading the poems that I enjoyed as I child. Definitely a "must have" for everyone.

My five year old cannot get enough of Shel Silverstein. He reads 10 or more poems out loud every day and has memorized several of them. This is our favorite collection of poems. They are funny, clever, imaginative. Even the illustrations are excellent. You can read them and then read them over and over again. The extra poems in the back are a great addition. Highly recommended.

This collection features the original Peanuts comics in its first 2 and 1/2 years. Not even the 1st Peanuts book includes all of the cartoons (I have the book and I don't remember it including the 1st cartoon where Shermy introduces Charlie Brown, sarcastically calling him "Good ol' Charlie Brown"). There are also cartoon from Holt's 2nd book More Peanuts. The 1st 5 characters included Charlie Brown (who started out naive and friendly), Patty (not Peppermint, she was just a cute girl with bobbed hair and a plaid dress and matching hairbow), Shermy (Charlie Brown's original buddy), Violet (known for her pigtails and mudpies) and Snoopy (who walked on all fours whose gags were more cute, not yet ingenious). The next year (1951) would mark the debut of Schroeder, who started out as a baby and later became a pint-sized musical genius with a passion for Beethoven (you can see the cartoon where Charlie Brown plants the seeds inside the future musical maestro's head). Violet and Patty would start out as friends to both Charlie Brown and Shermy. Also, Charlie Brown 1st models his trademarked shirt with the jagged stripe at the end of the 1st year. 1952 marks the beginning of the Sunday strip (I believe it's the one they're all playing tag; the trademarked block letters had yet to be introduced). And of course, we see the debut of the Van Pelt family. First introduced is Lucy, a cute little girl (seriously) with saucerlike eyes (she'd later sport a fussbudget attitude)and later, her baby brother, Linus (at 1st, he'd fall down a lot in the strip and had yet to be known for his blanket and his philosophy on life). Classic cartoons include the debut (of course), Charlie Brown getting offended by a rumour of a crush on Patty, Violet reprimanding Snoopy for sitting in the birdbath, the gang playing tag, Lucy mistaking Charlie Brown's record collection for licorice candy and the 1st instance of Charlie Brown getting the football yanked away (1st from Violet, but Lucy would later take on the role ever since). If you're a collector of Peanuts, you'll want this collection!

These are the strips you seldom see reprinted and yet they say so much. The first two years of "Peanuts" introduces you not only to many of the key characters (who look somewhat different than they would in later years) but also to the usually gentle, yet occasionally sharp, humor of Charles M. Schulz, which was splendid from the start but would get even better as the years passed. As a bonus, you get to see Schroder and Linus as babies, and Lucy as a toddler. (In Schulz's comic-strip world, they would age, but only a little.) You see Charlie Brown before he wore his familiar shirt with the zig-zag design, and meet Snoopy when he seemed more dog than human. What's more, there is an excellent introduction by Garrison Keillor, a summary of Schulz's life by David Michaelis, who would go on to write the definitive Schulz biography, and a lengthy interview with the great cartoonist himself. Even the index is helpful in locating such all-important items as when the immortal phrase "Good grief!" was first uttered. A valuable collection indeed.

Prior to reading this book, I had only circumstantial knowledge of "Peanuts". I thought this could be a good way to get started on it, and I was right!

That sublime book is hardcover, has a dustjacket, 2 full years of strip-ness, an introduction before the strips, and an essay after them, and also an interview with Schulz.

The whole thing is top-notch. The essay provided enormous insight on what "Peanuts" represented in its context, its public importance, and on Schulz as a person. That essay even made me cry. I swear to God, you'll cry too. Behind Schulz's funny and cute world are some terrible pains and lifelong scars. Schulz was a full of self-doubts and low self-esteem, despite his tremendous success, and all the experience he gained from that shows through his work, and works cathartically by making those moments look fun and funny and outside of ourselves.

I was surprised by "Peanuts" because I did not expect it to be this profound, nor this funny. To be honest, I expected something much more naive and lame, but it was not!

This book is my absolute recommendation for anyone intending to get started on "Peanuts": it is classy, it has perfect paper quality, good intro, amazingly deep and touching essay on Schulz and "Peanuts" - which relates the tragedy of his mother and of his going to war, and his last days - and an interview of the man himself; the whole thing gives you the impression that there was something saintly about Charles M. Schulz, and indeed, I want him canonised.

I used to red peanuts when I was a kid and finally we have the complete colection in a nice edition...it is always good to see my childhood pals..charlie brown, snoopy. A good edition for collectors and fans of comic books

Penauts is very good with lots of jokes from the times of your gramma's expressing themselves of there feelings and find the old gang of ol Charlie Brown I consider those who like to buy there penauts collection at Amazon.com. Good luck!

This book belongs in every child's shelf. When I read it with my children I am transported anew.

Falliing is such a great book just like Shel's other books. I have so much fun reading it to my children. This is a wonderful collection of poetry for children. This is the perfect example of what children's books should be... fun.
Another must have book for any fan of Shel Silverstein is Boety by Beau Beaudoin. His books are often compared to Shel, Dr. Seuss and Tim Burton. What my kids love about his illustrations are they are in color.Boetry

Review of Falling Up

The poem book Falling Up is a very good book. In the book the poems are about a mix of things including important lessons and funny things. Shel Silverstein did a very good job with his books and all of the books he wrote. Falling Up is by far my favorite poem book by Shel Silverstein.

Three poems that really caught my attention are "Gardener", "Spoiled Brat", and "The Toy Eater". I like "Gardener" because it is just a funny poem about a kid making a mistake. "Spoiled Brat" is an example of a life lesson that is very well written. I thought "The Toy Eater" is a great poem about making a little kid believe something that isn't true. All of these poems are very good examples of great imagination.

My favorite poem is "Obedient". This is a good poem because it is a life lesson and a funny poem. The life lesson is that when you do something there is a consequence and in this person's case they got a taste of their own medicine. This poem is funny because the poem takes the order literally by staying in the place for forty years. "Obedient" is a really great poem so I recommend that everyone should read it.

I think this book is a very entertaining, page turning book of poems. It is a great book for all ages, I highly recommend this book.

To be frank, I get a kick out of Silverstein's work. It is always a bit quirky, always takes a couple of readings to really "get," and is very entertaining while being quite insightful as to human nature. This work is no different from his other works, same quality, same odd way of looking at life, same delightful black and white drawings. Publisher's Weekly got it pretty right here, in their usual, rather snotty way, which is one of the few reviews I have ever agreed with them on. (except their little shot at some of his art that they felt may no be appropriate for kids...obviously the author of that review has never been around kids very much). This work consists of 171 pages of poetry rhymes and drawings. I first read Silverstein in Playboy magazine years and years ago when I wasted my time with such publications. I did not particularly care for him them, but over the years have developed quite a like for his work. I truely love this book and do highly recommend it.

Brian Frazer has written a funny, touching, wonderfully memorable book that I'd recommend to anyone who asked. One of the most impressive things about the text is how it starts with a great momentum that never lets up (not an easy thing to do). Most memoirs leave me cold--they tend to fall prey self-pity or self-congratulations. Frazer avoids the traps, and leaves us with a great memoir.

He's a REALLY talented writer and I look forward to whatever he comes up with next. A fan.

Between his honest and touching recollection of what life was like for him growing up and the vast range of therapies he experimented with in search for some solid self-help, he is not afraid to reveal his humanness and make fun of himself. I love books that involve a serious subject and yet are infused with so much humor that they reassure you that it is okay to be vulnerable, kind of like Dry by Augusten Burroughs. I have tried many alternative therapies myself but Brian Frazer's willingness to try unorthodox approaches was impressive and the outcomes were hysterical. This book was not only entertaining, but actually could be useful for people suffering from anxiety who seek alternatives to medication.

If you're the kind of person who's almost disappointed when it turns out your headache doesn't actually signal a brain tumor, or that your stiff neck is not the result of viral meningitis, then here's an aspirational book for you! Author Brian Frazer is one sick guy. He acquires obscure ailments, conditions and disorders with the ease of a web millionaire accumulating Russian mail-order brides. And boy, is Brian ever angry! Funny, but angry. Apparently, his rage pilot light never goes out. Turns out he grew up in a clan of kooks, and the effect on Brian was nature vs nurture in an internal war that still rages today - much to the delight of his vast retinue of acupunturists, yoga gurus, Kabbalah coaches, Indian nutritionists, etc. One of my favorite aspects of this well-written quirkfest is the child-like trust he places in each new "healer", even in light of their quack credentials. Brian's genuine desire to calm his unruly brain and body, along with the comedic self-awareness of his excesses, helped counter my amused horror at his bizarre outbursts and episodes. Brian's rudder appears to be his forebearing wife, Nancy, who tolerates his various quests with saintly mildness. "Poor Nancy!" was my unspoken refrain as Brian's full weirdness unfolded. The funniest thing was when I tried to discuss the memoir with my husband after I'd finished, but it was like we'd read two different books. I'd enjoyed the tale of an ultra-intense fellow who embarks on ridiculous procedures to control unrealistic amounts of stress brought on by seemingly nothing at all. By contrast, my husband found it to be a highly-relatable account of a can-do guy ingeniously coping with everyday problems. Now I'm wondering who I married.

From the very first word to the very last punctuation mark, I was smitten with Brian Frazer's book. And by smitten I mean obsessed. Give-this-lady-a-restraining-order obsessed. I couldn't put the thing down. I dog-eared, highlighted, underlined, astrisked, did spontaneous readings for my illiterate seven-month old -- who, by the way, loved loved LOVED Chapter 7: Laminating... and every single thing that came out of Nancy's mouth, if we're making a list. Bottom line, "Hyper-chondriac" is the funniest and most honest account of the consequences of childhood. A must-have for everyone who has been a child or who has had a parent. David Sedaris and Anne Lamott, watch your backs.

HYSTERICAL.

Such a creative and imaginative writer. The scenarios he comes up with are AWESOME. I sometimes find myself thinking "oh my God, is he living in my head?!?". His humor and ridiculous stories have actually helped me past certain things in my life and have helped me to realize that i'm not insane (not certifiably anyway)!!

I love, love, love this book. I recommend it to anyone and everyone.

This first book in The Bodyguard series has Natasha making dumb mistakes in her ambition to prove to her boss that she can do more than office work and that she deserves a promotion to investigator. Her immaturity allows her to grow as a character in the later books in the series. This story is intense, thrilling, romantic and funny which keeps the reader turning pages. You can't help but care about her characters.

I have been a fan of this writer since her first book came out. I love her!!! Take my word for it all of Ms. French's books are fantastic stories! If you have not had a chance to read any of her books well then this book is the perfect book to start with...so, what are you waiting for...order your copy today!!!

In Christy Tillery French's THE BODYGUARD, we meet our feisty, loveable, wacky heroine, Natasha Chamberlain, for the very first time. That is, of course, unless you are like me and are reading this series in reverse order. By some strange cosmic joke, I received the third book first and the first book last, but do you know what? It just doesn't matter. The books in Ms. French's Bodyguard Series are self-contained, easily read, and thoroughly enjoyable in any order.

In THE BODYGUARD, we get the full background on Nattie, Striker, Pit, Bigun, and Roger. How they met, how their relationships developed, and how they all came together as the "family" they are. The story opens with Natasha, the office manager for an investigation firm, getting her big chance to become an investigator herself. To do that, she must first take on the role of bodyguard for Roger Valentine, a ridiculously wealthy, nerdy, reclusive computer software genius who has received death threats. Natasha reluctantly accepts the job, and we are off at break-neck speed on a non-stop, action-packed, edge of your seat adventure. Natasha has a kind of wide-eyed innocence combined with a strict moral code; she cannot stand to see any harm or cruelty done to any living thing, and she is going to single-handedly take on the world, righting one wrong at a time. Of course, this leads to many extremely bizarre, humorous, and dangerous situations, which, for the reader, leads to a fun and exciting read.

Christy Tillery French is unmistakably a very talented author; however, there are two specific elements of her style that clearly standout. The first is her characters. They are so authentic, so well developed, so alive, so real that they feel like family. People who live next door. People you have known all your life. I really like these characters, and think of them as friends. The second is how Ms. French draws you into her stories with action blasting off on the first page...from the first paragraph. No wind up, no pitch, just BAM! You are instantly submerged in her world. And she does this without losing any detail or information important to the story. It all flows together for a breathtaking read.

I believe the fourth installment of the Bodyguard Series is due out late this year. Having read the first three books quite quickly this summer, I will miss Nattie, Striker, and the gang until then. I have very much enjoyed my time with these new friends. I can't wait to see them again. Oh, Christy...

Through my library's book group, I've become a dedicated reader of this author. Although she writes about darker subjects, I like her romantic comedies the best. And this introduction to The Bodyguard is a winner. Natasha Chamberlain wants to be an investigator, so goes about it by entering through the backdoor: as a bodyguard to Roger Valentine, a multimillionaire software king. Natasha's boss, Jonce Striker, quickly regrets his decision to include Natasha as a protection specialist to his good friend, Roger. All of a sudden, Roger's appearance is changing and Natasha and her two colleagues, Pit and Bigun, are having too much fun hanging out at Roger's mansion. Not to mention, Natasha is way overzealous in protecting Roger. And is she starting to crush on Roger? Although Striker doesn't know it, Natasha has the hots for him and is determined to get his attention. Then ends up getting too much of his attention through her bungled attempts to keep Roger from harm.

Great start to what looks like a fun series. I like that this protagonist is so young, which means, I'm sure, that we'll see plenty of changes with her as she develops in her career.

I saw a post about this series on the discussion forum, comparing it to Janet Evanovich's Plum series, read the blurb and reviews, and was interested. Natasha is a gutsy bodyguard who is committed to her job and client, Roger Valentine. She tends to overdo, which gets her into some pretty funny situations. The addition of Pit and Bigun, the two Samoan bodyguards, adds more humor. I own a Weimaraner, so was delighted to see one added to the wacky mix of characters in this book. One of my favorites is Stevie, Natasha's perimenopausal mom. Do I ever know what that's about!

If you like quirky, offbeat characters, a mystery plot, romance, and a bit of suspense, give this one a try. I'm anxious to read #2 in the series.
