Mildly entertaining, but tries too hard to be funny

This is an odd book that actually makes only passing reference to the title (explained a little towards the end), which I assume is mainly for shock value and to entice you to pick it up (it worked for my friend, who lent it to me).

Our anti-heroine is entertaining enough, and at times her trials and tribulations are outright funny, but after a while this all begins to wear a little thin. Her antics become so disastrous, that it is actually difficult to take it all in. Just somewhere along the line, I needed her to have a break from all the havoc!

So whereas this is not what it seems, and it tries to hard to be funny, it may be appealing to readers who like a relatively fast paced book. But it fell a little short for me.

The most fun and entertaining book ever!!

This book has never really got a fair shake. After SLAVES OF NEW YORK got so much acclaim, Janowitz was unfairly treated with the backlash reserved for those who become famous "too fast". A Cannibal In Manhattan was not a great work, but CROSSDRESSER most certainly was. It's extremely funny, whimsical, and daring. I've read it several times, and no other book in existence has ever made me laugh so hard. SLAVES was great, but I seem to be one of the few who feels this is even better. (I also like Kirsty MacColl, Flannery O'Connor, Scott Heim, Sam Phillips, John Waters, Todd Solondz, and French & Saunders, just in case you're wondering.)

Disappointing

As an avid cross dresser myself, I expected to find a book that would open a window into my world, with the occasional "aha!" moment and humourous insights into my sort of life. So I was a little disspaointed that the treatment was so shallow. Non-transvestites may enjoy the book, but I would not reccomend it to transvestites.

PATHETIC

I had to agree with the reader who lost interest when Pamela couldn't tell that the head she had picked up from the highway was an actual one. I found the first half fairly funny, but the road trip and everything afterwards was over the top. It wasn't just the head -- burning down her father's house? Keeping the head all the way to Maine? How stupid can a person be? That I was supposed to sympathize with Pamela's misadventures is insulting. The only bright spot was Abdhul -- he deserved better.

Seriously disappointing.

This book is a mess.

Janowitz's short stories are far better. Essentially what it seems she's tried to do here is "novelize" a series of short story ideas, totally without success. Janowitz specializes in off the wall characters, but there is a fine line between off the wall and simply bizarre, and Janowitz crosses it with a vengeance here.

And it's not just the characters, but the situations as well. There's a long aside about dealing with a severed head that's pointless, ridiculous and adds not a whit to the story.

It's unfortunate--the basic concept of finding a wayward child in trouble, running off to save the boy, then coming back as a man (this was a very mannish woman to begin with) might have had some interesting possibilities for humor and social insight. But the situation is so buried in detritus and the set of characters so contrived neither insight--nor much humor-emerges.

Ms. Janowitz would be well served by steering a bit more toward the mainstream and worrying a bit more about developing a story rather than a reputation.

This book is not cram at all. Not even detail to cover up the exam. I think only good as extra reference for studying. It is waste of money.

This book is good for extr reference, however there is not enought information to pass the exam. I think this book did not meet the standard of exam cram. Topic is too general when you compare it with other sources. This is a waste.

Info is out of date, too

ok for basic info, read older Netware 3.12,Intranetware book

Well, 3 stars...why because they only target Netware5 related questions. I just missed out the first exams, and after a resit passed. The exam relates to all netware versions, 3/4/5 which the book does not advise. Get a older Intranetware 4 book and study from that as well. You will need a very rounded knowledge base to get past the exam.

ServiceSupport CD gets a large number of questions...why..no idea. I asked Novell, and was advised that they are reviewing this for the next update. Remember this is a added price to netware, but they question you on this.

This books is okay for what is between the covers, where it fails is what is doesn't tell you.

One of the most efficient & reliable way to pass the exam

This book is excellent and almost covers everything which you need to know for the exam. The practice questions in this book are very useful. I used both this book and the old student manual (course 801) from Novell to study for the exam. This book hasn't mentioned about ARCNet. Make sure you get some additional information from the student manual as well. Of course, you still need to know how to use MTL SupportSource and the Support Connection CDs. I highly recommended to study the exam with this valuable book.

Tantalizing, frustrating and worth having.

If you are interested in understanding the origins of electronic intelligence, electronic warfare and electronic countermeasures, this book is a tantalizing beginning. Unfortunately it is also a frustrating read. The author (who clearly has an encyclopedia knowledge of the strategy, tactics and history of the field) veers between offering unqiue insights sandwiched between mind numbing pages of the exploits of each and every pilot and mission of the 100 Group. This book just tried to do too much and failed. Still its worth buying if you want to understand where the field started. Other frustations include a glossary that covers only 50% of the buzzwords used in the book and no bibliography. Another book which offers a technical view of the development of airborne and air to ground bombing radar is "Echoes of War:The Story of H2S Radar" by Bernard Sir Lovell. Almost as poorly written as this one, but this time from the technical side, it is a good complement for someone trying to accumulate data on the field.

This article, all $5.95 of it, is only 379 words long. It does NOT include statistical data. It is a news brief about a lecture given by someone else. It doesn't tell you anything you don't already know: eat less, move more, keep at it, monitor yourself, and get support. That is hardly worthy of Amazon.

Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-31
I wish that there was a comprehensive Step by Step book on how to install a NT Web Server-a reference that anybody can understand especially those who are taking the Internet into their own hands for the first time. Most of the books that claim to do this are too general in their coverage or are so poorly written they are not worth reading.

If you are looking for that detailed aspect, do not buy this book. Besides, it is out of date.

This book is nothing but a series of exercises and prayers that have practically nothing to do with divorced, widowed or separated people. It comes from a religious perspective and provides no information about the issues that divorced, widowed or separated people are going through. I ordered it and am now trying to resell it but to be honest with you, I don't advise you spend your money on this book unless you're looking for scripture readings and general group exercises.
