An excellent overview of South Dakota rock art by a noted expert in the field. I had particular interest in the Cave Hills area, just south of where I live in North Dakota.

An Adventurous Journey Back in Time
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-16
How wonderful an experience to go back to the days of innocence and adventure. Meet a superb story teller and fine writer in Stephen Joseph who takes us through his coming of age story to meet Jim Billy, Dick, and especially those old spirits of the West. All names that shaped a deep part of who he grew to be. This book has it all--romance, adventure, nature, and of course humor--all told with remarkable descriptions. And most of all you will be surprised with the author's revealing himself to us. Don't think this is a guy's book; any woman will enjoy the women characters that play an important part in the stories. Must read for anyone who grew up in those days; and a delightful longing might await those of you who didn't. Must read!

A Five Star history by a man truly in touch with the range
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-12
Teton Skiing is a phenomenal book written eloquently and comically from the perspective of a mountaineer (Tom Turiano) who has climbed and skiied nearly every peak in the range. The book is perfect for someone thinking about a trip to the Tetons in order to gain more insight into the history that made it the touring site it is today, as well as, a guide to help in planning your trip. It is also a great book for anyone interested in history and/or the outdoors in general. Although it is partly a guidebook, it was more intersting to me for its well researched and colorful history of this mythical wonder called the Tetons. If you haven't been to Wyoming's Tetons, this book will make you want to go. If you have been, it will drive you to return and discover things unseen. A book I treasure!

1885 View of Yellowstone and Western Culture
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-01-10
George W. Wingate was a man in full for his time. With his Civil War compatriot Col. William C. Church, Wingate published the first manual on rifle marksmanship in 1870. The following year the pair established the National Rifle Association.

In 1885, Wingate's concern for the health of his 17-year old daughter and his sense of adventure led him, his wife and their eldest daughter, May, to plan a horseback trip through Yellowstone National Park. Doctors believed the trip would improve May's health. It did.

The Wingates rode 460 miles in just 26 days, returning to New York City bedazzled by the park and in fine spirits.

Wingate's book, Through the Yellowstone Park on Horseback, provides a faithful and fascinating account of early tourist travel. The University of Idaho Press provides a service by republishing the book and reminding us of Yellowstone's marvelous history.

Wingate was also a faithful observer. He provided fine sketches of Western culture, from an Army fort past its prime, to profiles of those he hired to guide his family through the park. Hunters and anglers will enjoy his accounts of adventures during the journey.

The book offers a valuable perspective for those who have visited the park. It also may spur readers who love historical books to visit Yellowstone.

Wonderful Depth And Fine Writing
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-04
Why isn't anyone reading Gerry Spence's books from the 80's? They're brilliant. This book takes on freedom of the press, misogony, pornography, the appeals system, and beauty pageants - and does it with erudition and fine writing skill. Also with humor. It is the story of Spence's representation of Miss Wyoming in her libel suit against Penthouse magazine in 1980. The best kept secret about Spence, the "aw shucks, just a country lawyer" guy on the talk shows, is that he shares with the reader his delightful skills as a storyteller, and his worldy wise observations on the weighty issues of the day. And he's readable ! Can't put it down kind of readable. I haven't read his more current work yet but I have every expectation that he hasn't lost his touch. Read this. It's really worth while.

If you are going to be fly fishing in Colorado or Wyoming you absolutely must track down a copy of this out-of-print book. It crams an incredible amount of useful information into 149 pages of easy to read prose, charts and illustrations -- nearly all of which is as valid today as when first printed in 1987. Wish I could find more copies to use as gifts for friends!
