Wyoming Books

I got this book, along with the others in this series, for my father who had read them when he was younger. He was thrilled when he received them.

Kermode, who introduced the English-speaking world to French post-structuralist theory when he was teaching at the University of London, is far less interested in such effete and rarified (not to say, obtuse!) things than in relating his childhood, youth and early adulthood to the later course his life took. Born on the linguistically isolated island of Mann, his recollections of those early years suggested nothing of the extraordinary literary-critical future that awaited him. His service in the Royal Navy puts to rest the common conviction that anyone who served in that war must be a hero. On the contrary, he considered the whole outing a total waste of time (something that anyone who's served in the military will recogize as fundamentally correct!). A narrow measure of his prodigious critical output may be found in another AMAZON offering of Kermode's: _The Uses of Error_

The Heart Mountain Concentration camp is just north of my home in Cody, WY so I am very familiar with it. I work at the local library and this is one of our most checked out items and one we recommend when patrons are looking for something on this item of local history.

This is a wonderfully-written love story. But instead of detailed love scenes in typical romance novels, it is written respectfully about the relationship between the characters. The "love story" is also about the characters' love of Wyoming. The descriptions of the landscape are so vivid it is not hard to see it in your mind even if you've never been to Wyoming. It was hard to put this one down and well worth reading, especially for those that love wide open spaces.

Hidden Wyoming appears in its third edition to provide selective recommendations and reviews of lodgings, sightseeing, and special dining experiences throughout the state. A "user friendly" and recommended pick for destination-bound travelers.

I used Marc Smith's book on a brief September 2006 visit to the Laramie Range and found it helpful and accurate for the hikes I took in that beautiful area, surprisingly little visited, even on a spectacular fall weekend with both aspen and ash in full yellow. I can't assess how useful it would be for other (apparently more popular) areas of the National Forest but I would visit those places with fair confidence, with this book in hand.
The format is very similar to the recent Falcon Guides of similar purpose; i.e. trip description, with succinct data prefaced, maps of the immediate route.
As always, I would suggest getting hold of actual topo maps (or GPS, these days, I suppose) for more demanding trips. At least visit the Douglas office of the MBNF to get a district map (seven dollars, if I remember rightly); take the first Douglas exit on I25 coming from Cheyenne; the Forest Service office is on the right.

I just spent 2 weeks hiking in Wyoming making extensive use of this guide. It is enchanting and accurate, a combination rarely found in hiking guides. Of the many guides I have used over the years, covering the Unites States and Europe, this one ranks among the very best. The author obviously knows the hikes he recommends, he describes very clearly how to find the railheads, and provides all the necessary information to an extraordinary experience in Wyoming.

This book is likely to be the best you can get if you want to know a significant part of the history of the UP in general and about Cheyenne specifically. VERY highly recommended!

Willa, who hopes to one day become a reinswoman for the Overland Stage Line, drives the family stage when the regular driver becomes ill. The book also contains information on how the Overland Stagecoach helped settle the American West.
This book is illustrated and contains archival photographs and drawings. It also included bolded vocabulary words with a glossary. Children will be able to identify with the young, main character and learn about an important event in American history at the same time. ["Ribbons" is the stagecoach term for "reins"]
This educational children's book is both exciting and informative!
