This novel about an early midwestern American family is a facinating look at life in the 19th century. The author gives the characters such interesting lives that the reader keeps turning the pages to see what happens next. I will definitely look for more books by Wilma Lewis

In the tradition of the classic 'film noir,' this book reads like a timeless masterpiece (black-and-white) movie from the 30's. Masterful & imaginative weaving of intrigue and the English language...and it's a true story! Buy it (I know it's out of print...go find it). It's a wonderful addition to any mystery-lover's library. Get it before the movie is made and you'll have a collectible.

As a Green Bay Packer fan, I knew I would love this volume of the Portrait of America series. But there's more to Wisconsin than just the cheese-heads. This great little book will explain it all.
The "Portrait of America" series is a wonderful and concise introduction for pre-teens to all of the fifty states and to the places and events that shaped the history of the United States. This "Wisconsin" installment is particularly good. The book is broken down into sections like "History", "Culture", "Economy" etc., and each section is thoughtfully written and edited. And this edition is loaded with several beautiful photographs.
This book, as well as the entire "Portrait of America" series, will prove to be a valuable teaching tool to all primary school educators.

A volunteer at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, James McIntosh is the ideal author for a project like Wisconsin At War: Through The Eyes Of Veterans. A truly memorable work that specifically covers Wisconsin's participation in all the wars throughout the twentieth century, beginning with World War I and continuing through Desert Storm, Wisconsin At War is enhanced with black-and-white photographs and a wealth of individual anecdotes filling this fascinating volume cover to cover. Told in the words of the people who fought bravely for their country, the historical perspectives on the events and experiences engaging Wisconsin men and women in the defense of their country is a seminal source reference, strongly recommended reading, and an essential, core acquisition for all academic and community library Wisconsin History collections.

It is difficult to rate a book by 5 Stars or less when it is someone's diary. The book covers Newton's journey from enlistment in 1861 to final discharge in 1865. It is a rather quick read of his letters sent home although it covers the monthly grind of soldiering in the 14th Wisconsin. Newton skips many descriptions of horrific content in his letters home that was common back then and manages to keep them clean. His hardships endured through out the many years of soldiering are toned down in his writing. Perhaps, like other soldiers, he didn't want family to worry at home. His attitude towards black soldiers brings about expression that by today's standards would be considered racist. His letters do bring to light the emotion and desire to return home and also helps illustrate the psychological profiles of soldiers close to him. You can never go wrong studying letters from the Civil War as they always help bring new life to the realities of the conflict. This book certainly can bring new insight and thought to anyone looking understand more about soldiering during the Civil War.

The book is conveniently organised by the color of the flowers. I found this to be remarkably easy to use for quick identification. The entries include the common name, scientific name, the family, a detailed written description, habitat type, flowering season, and whether it is native or introduced.
The most remarkable thing is that every single watercolor illustration was done fresh from personally observed specimens. This eliminates the "copying of mistakes" that goes on for generations that you find in some reference guides.
Finally there is a section of excellent line drawings of plant parts, as well as a convenient glossary of botanical terms.
The profits from the sales of this book go to the Door County Land Trust.
