DC Washington Books

Note: I made some Mormon reader angry over my negative reviews of books written by Mormons out to prove the Book of Mormon, and that person has been slamming my reviews.

On this book: I have returned it again and again. "Connecticut Autumn," by O. Louis Guglielmi (1937, see image) was worth the whole book in my opinion. The mystery of the boy flying a kite on a cloudy day by funeral monument building is intriguing.

Another mysterious painting is the "Staircase, Doylestown," by Charles Sheeler (1925). This is a perfect setting for a mystery novel.

A highly recommended volume (color images).

Another book, this one full of rare black-and-white engravings (19th Century), is "A Celebration of Humanism and Freethought," by David Allen Williams. A Celebration of Humanism and Freethought
This book has been passed over as book of philosophy, but it is full of wonderful engravings.

I am posting some other neat paintings (mostly book covers). This is the only way I know to add to my images (some real winners--check them out).

I'm not an art reviewer, but I know what I like. Thanks for any comments you may have--positive or negative.

For anyone interested in water resources, or just intrigued by the glamorous world of insider politics, PICK-SLOAN PROJECT: OVERSIGHT HEARING BEFORE THE SUBCOMMITEE ON WATER AND POWER RESOURCES OF THE COMMITTEE ON RESOURCES, HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, ONE HUNDRED FOURTH CONGRESS, SECOND SESSION, PICK-SLOAN PROJECT REPAYMENT ISSUES.... is a must. Reading it in 2003, much of the information is no longer relevant, and the specific focus on repayment is often slow going, and many of the subcommittee members seem to repeat themselves endlessly, and the transcript doesn't hold up to the earlier subcommittee oversight hearing: PICK-SLOAN PROJECT: OVERSIGHT HEARING BEFORE THE SUBCOMMITTEE ON WATER AND POWER RESOURCES OF THE COMMITTEE ON RESOURCES, HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, ONE HUNDRED THIRD CONGRESS.... That said, I nevertheless found myself infinitely more knowlegeable about repayment and other issues surrounding the Pick-Sloan project after reading the transcript of this oversight hearing. Kudos to the stenographer.

DO NOT go to Washington DC without this VERY handy little map. It folds to the size of a credit card. Almost everything the average tourist wants to see is on it. There is a Metro map on the reverse. I bought several maps for my trip, but I used this one about 90% of our stay. Well worth the very minimal price, I got 2 & they made a great souviner for my sons!!!

The book represents a very accessible invitation to some of the essential aspects of quantum computation. While the emphasis is on the mathematical side of the subject, several of the chapters cover the connections to physics and computer science as well. The editor is also one of the authors (of several chapters in the book.--Very nice ones!) The other authors include Peter Shor(an introduction), Dan Gottesman(quantum error correction), Alex Kitaev(quantum codes), U. Vazirani(quantum complexity), and Louis Kauffman(quantum topology). The book is great both for selfstudy and for a beginning course, and it is enjoyable reading.

Fantastic slim old tome on the rebuilding of the White House during the Truman administration. Includes photos of the demolition and reconstruction and several high-quality color images of the finished rooms. It details many of the costs and history behind the project and includes detailed floor plans of the ground, first, second, and third floors of the Residence. However, there is nothing on the East Wing or West Wing (which were hardly touched) and almost nothing on the furnishings, and no photos of the less famous rooms.

As a new resident of Washington D.C., this book, "Short Bike Rides: Washington D.C.," has become for my family an invaluable introduction of the area's numerous bike trails and routes. Each route is introduced with a short synopsis of its main attractions and challenges, followed by precise yet easy to follow directions. The book was obviously well researched.

This is a great book. The rhymes are cute, and the illustrations are wonderful. Your kids will really recognize the places they are seeing. The book presents all the top spots for sightseeing in Washington, DC, adding some ridiculous creature to the scene, such as a teddy bear, a gnome, or a group of kangaroos. Don't be surprised if you're driving down Pennsylvania Avenue and your child cries out, "Isn't that the place with the gnome on top?!"

I should know... I was the assistant editor on the book...seriously, it is a fine book and the publishers should update and re-issue this handsome,informative and witty guide to one of the worlds most intriguing cities.

This book has some great photos of DC. I loved looking at the photos of the places I love visiting.

This book is very well put together. If you like Spencer you will refer to it constantly above all other works about him (except a full length biography). There's a lot of writing about his life, and there are many, many color plates of his paintings that provide real depth of viewing what this person was about. All of this is in a pleasing font and design. The best art book I've ever seen.
