i just love this book. it talks about qalandars and haydaris and other "unruly" and "heretical" dervish groups which have almost been forgotten with vivid details and old drawings. But most importantly it delves into the reason behind their actions and the way they lived. At this day and age, and for these modern societies, the world absolutely needs Qalandars or perhaps neo-Qalandars.

one of the most fascinating books i've read on history and extinct groups.

The 2005 winner of the Agha Shahid Ali Prize in Poetry, The Gods We Worship Live Next Door is a stark free- verse collection. Written by a Manila native who survived the Bataan Death March and a WW II Japanese concentration camp in the Philippines, The Gods We Worship Live Next Door images horrific events in human history with the stark clarity that only art can provide. A dark, vivid insight into unjustifiable cruelties and wrongs. From a Filipino Death March Survivor Whose WW II Benefits Were Rescinded by the US Congress in 1946: 1. I left three years ago. / 2. If you want to know about my rural childhood, ask my survivors. / 3. If you want to know how I was recruited into the United States Army at twenty, ask President Roosevelt. / 4. If you want to know how I ended up in the Death March at twenty-one, ask General MacArthur. / 5. If you want to know how many of my friends perished in the Japanese concentration camps, ask General Homma. / 6. If you want to know how I contracted malaria, beri-beri, dysentery, skin disease, gastrointestinal disease in one month, ask the Japanese Camp Commander. / 7. If you want to know how my military benefits were rescinded at the end of the war, ask President Truman. / 8. If you want to know how I became a 100% disabled veteran, ask my V.A. doctors.

Highly recommended.

This book sets a new standard for excellence when it comes to books on this topic.

Review Date: 2008-06-19
This book is simply the best book out there on the subject of growing food in the mountains of the Southwest. Author Lisa Rayner is a real perfectionist who goes the extra mile to get her facts straight. In this third edition of her now-classic permaculture text, her attention to detail is beautifully combined with the helpful illustrations of Zack Zdinack into a well-organized guide that has become even more indispensable as the need to grow more of our food locally has become more intense. This book not only explains how to grow food in an arid, high-altitude climate, but also how to do so in a way that works with nature using permaculture techniques. Even if you have never heard of permaculture, you will learn how to follow nature's examples to succeed at growing food in a harsh environment. As with Rayner's other book The Sunny Side of Cooking - Solar cooking and other ecologically friendly cooking methods for the 21st centurythis book on growing food is well researched and contains an extensive list of resources. In the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that I am the author's husband.

excellent guide to arches outside of arches nat'l park

this (and its companion book for arches to the south) is an excellent guide to arches outside of arches national park. i will say, you really need not only a four-wheel drive vehicle to get to most of these arches but you need one with high clearance and a short wheelbase (i think that is the right way to say it). i have a toyota 4-runner and i wasn't really able to get to many of these either in or out of the park because my car was too long, and i probably needed knobbier tires. there are jeep rental places in moab--it would probably be a good idea to just rent one, as i will do next time, to get out to see these amazing works of nature. another thing to get is a really good map once you get there, because the ones reproduced are really difficult to read. in all other respects it is a great guide!

rock and roll
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-31
The iconography of the American West is full of discrepancies: the myth-making machinery of 19th century dime novels and 20th century Hollywood movies elevated some people and events into legends and totally ignored better stories. Even today, when revisionist historians have combed through western history to find women and African Americans worthy of hero-hood, one group largely remains off-limits for American hero-hood: the Mormons. Since the Mormons pioneered one of the harshest parts of the West, this means that some of America's most extraordinary pioneer stories have remained largely unknown outside of Utah. In all of American pioneer history, few stories can match the Hole-in-the-rock expedition for unlikeliness, determination, and ingenuity. Though this book is titled as a trail guide, it is first of all a good account of the adventure, along with plenty of photographs that bring home the toughness of the terrain. Then it offers a route guide, although after reading about this ordeal, some people may be content to stay home.

A truth that is more exciting and intriguing than the myth!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-12
Custer was a great military strategist, WA Clark was an honest man, The buffalo were not killed off by the white man, The Indians were murdering godless savages, Henry Plummer was a ringleader of desperadoes that killed 101 people in a year---------NOT! So much for the Hollywood style myths perpetuated by less than thorough historians. This book brilliantly debunks the Henry Plummer myth through careful reasearch, and demonstrates that the Vigilantes killed numerous innocent people (along with a few crooks) with nothing more than a desire to eliminate whoever got in their way. This is a well documented read that for the first time demonstrates that the truth indeed is more fascinating than the myth covering up the mob mentality of the Vigilantes. I grew up in Montana and looked at these Vigilantes as heroes. But after reading this brilliant delivery of the facts.....I find myself somewhat feeling burned by the history writers who self-servingly smeared everyone they hung (after they hung them).......including a verifiable honest hardworkding hispanic in Bannack that the Vigilantes referred to as the "Greaser". Of course there is author bias contained in the book, but behind the style and content of the authors are hard undeniable facts........facts that tell perhaps one of the most fascinating stories in the history of the west--a story untold until these two authors presented it. Read this book if you can get your hands on it. I did, and I am glad I did!! Was Henry Plummer a victim? Well if Custer was a Brillilant military strategist, then he was not. But only you can answer that question.
