This book is excellent if you are tired of the hussle and bussle of the city and looking for a GREAT weekend trip to the mountains. The maps are a little hard to see but the write-ups for all of the Inns are tremendous. Also included is what to do around the town with restuarants included.

I love how attentive to the world these poems are, the way they illuminate the small wonders that surround us. Lisa Hammond is a gifted poet, and this collection should gain her many appreciative readers.
--Ron Rash
Lisa Hammond's Moving House is a startlingly beautiful first collection of poems made of careful noticing, especially of the natural world. But more important than the naturalist's accurate observation is the depth and delicacy (an oddly effective pairing) of an imagination that, in her best poems, transforms self and reader.

Having just concluded reading this fine book, I am stunned by the magnitude of what I did not know about this amazing man. No man had greater impact on the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution of the United States. Emerson said of him "he was the lens through which the [Constitutional] Convention would read its own mind." The bibliography contins close to 300 sources and is quite peerless in its scholarship. I recommend it to lawyer, politician and historical adventurer alike. Did you know the phrase "We the People" dates from an Iroqouis Treaty of 1520? Rutledge admired the phrase as being truly American.

No one since Faulkner has been able to capture the real South as well as Ben Greer - he pulls you in one sense at a time and in doing so, deep into the story of Archibald Sims' race against time to stop a serial killer. You ARE there and you will not stop turning the pages into you are sure you get out alive. I can't wait for the next Archibald Sims mystery.

A story I have tried to locate and read for a number of years. Wonderfully written with love and respect. I feel so fortunate to have this book - it took so long to be released and I am now reading it for the second time. Chan gives the average fan a better understanding of the artist (Bird) who forever changed the music of our lives. Many details of her life and the exciting time of her youth are included. I almost felt like I was there myself - you can feel the music in the air. A huge thank you to the author - I am so grateful to have this piece of history and am even more passionate about the music of the great Charlie Parker. A must read for any jazz fan....

This book was written by a relative of mine and names most all of my family in Bladenboro, NC. It is very well presented, although it did not present the Hesters in a good light. I am one of those Hesters, and some of the things that were said in the book, I know to be a falsehood.

Let me say as someone who has loved Myrtle Beach all my life I have often wondered what some of the places that I have only heard about when on vacation in the city really looked like. No more do I have to wonder because they are here in this book. The author seems to be very good at her research. If you are a history buff or just someone who likes then and now pictures this book is worth the money. I'm giving it five stars because in my opinion it deserves everyone of them.

I found this book on my family's vacation at Pawley's Island in South Carolina. I chose it because I like mysteries and this one also contained some of the early history of SC and the area we were visiting. The book was filled with suspense and excitement. I had trouble with old Gabe speaking gullah so I was glad for a glossary at the end of the book.
I read a few chapters every night before I went to bed. At times I couldn't put it down, especially when we were about to find out why the couple, Hugh and Roxie, were after old Gabe!
One of my favorite parts in the story was when Phil and Jerry
were hiding in the shed where the shrimp boats come in to dock. The couple was on to them and might have taken them captive if they were caught helping Gabe.
I liked the kids' plot with the "conjure man" to get clothes from the couple so he could make voo-doo dolls. It was interesting how superstition was part of Gabe's beliefs. I was really nervous when the kids were taken captive and put on Botany Bay Island. I thought it was resourceful of them to spell HELP out of sea shells.

This book analyzes the central role the metaphors play in human thought. Metaphors reveal and highlight certain
aspects as well as hide other aspects. As scientists we use theoretical models to understand the real world constantly. The
fact these models are metaphors is crucial to understanding many debates about the realism and lack thereof of scientific theories. I am surprised that the set of ideas contained in this book is so little known and discussed in academic circles. I
have not read them, but more recent books like Lakoff's Metaphors We Live By probably cover the same ground.

Awesome Book on Historic Southeastern Indians

If you are researching the Upper or Lower Creek Indians or the Chickasaw Indians of the late 1600s to early 1700s, this is a book you simply have to have, so this new edition is heartily welcomed! Thomas Nairne was an Indian Agent devoted to the spread of English culture and goods throughout the southeast. He opposed the Spanish, who had the same goals, and successfully brought many southeastern Indian towns and confederations into South Carolina's field of influence. He was killed at the very beginning of the Yemassee War, in 1715, attempting to diffuse the powder keg of Indian anger at unscrupulous Carolinian traders (which was largely justified), and though it took a while, many of his viewpoints and plans for the Indian trade were eventually adopted by the United States. His map of the southeast, showing locations of Indian towns just after 1700, is, along with this book, one of the most important primary documents of the era. Unfortunately the map is reprinted so small in this edition that none of the detail can be seen.
