Native Tarheels and anyone who has visited North Carolina will enjoy this collection of photos.

I bought this book for my father, who is from the mountains of North Carolina and spent the last 20 years as a professional photographer. He was thrilled with it. The pictures are beautiful and you truly get a sense that Hugh Morton was a man who loved his state.

This book has it all! The author includes copies of original letters and pictures which I think adds to the book. I especially liked the engineering drawings of the submarine itself. A read, I'd suggest anyone to read it.

This is a new, updated version of "The Hunley: Submarines, Sacrifice, & Success in the Civil War", now simply renamed. Like the original, this slightly smaller format trade paperback edition is illustrated with period drawings, photos, and copies of documents. The richly informed and annotated text of the first five chapters is nearly identical to the early edition, but laid out for easier reading and reference. The expanded sixth and last chapter includes a detailed account of the recovery and excavation of the vessel, which happened since the original publication, and in which Ragan participated. As in the original, Ragan's personal accounts of his research and related activity enhances the overall reading experience. The new work adds an index and includes expanded endnotes, increasing its value as reference tool.

This is a great book about the Haitian Revolution it is different essay about this revolution impact on other nations in the Atlantic World. It not only gives various historians thoughts and ideas but a more rounder view of what this revolution really did for the atlantic world.

Like most of the recent work of David Geggus, this book provides a good frame work and introduction for a much-needed academic study of the Haitian Revolution and it's world-wide impact.

Roth's research into the Rabbinic status from 67AD to present is an undertaking that no one had considered, and I was one of the multitude. It's well written, concise, and fascinating.

This book tells the story of rabbis and the way their profession developed from ancient to modern times.
Well written, very clear and easy to read, it reflecta contains much interesting and useful information about rabbis, Jewish history and Jewish law.
Few authors take the time to do the quality of research apparent in this wonderful book. I highly recommend it.

I was too long in purchasing a guide to the Outer Banks. I'd been going for years so what was there that I could learn? Certainly I'd learned all there was to learn in my visits. What was left? This book proved that the answer was plenty!

Even if you purchase this book to discover new restaurants, you won't be disappointed. I learned that there were restaurants off the beaten track, on roads that I thought had led nowhere, which actually curled around to an island and to a wonderfully intimate and wonderful restaurant. I learned what restaurants specialized in gourmet, which needed reservations, sometimes a year in advance, and which catered just to family.

Also, where could I take my pooch? Which beaches would accomodate us during the summer? Where were tennis courts and other facilities? Where were nature walks? What's to see where?

The pages have become dog-eared. Notes have been scrawled in the margins. This book has become indispenable for us, and I'm certain that if you are a visitor to the Outer Banks, it probably will be indispensable to you as well.

I had an old copy of this guide when we were vacationing on the Outer Banks. It was very helpful, but I loved it so much I bought the current copy to update, both were worth every penny. I could only wish all travel guides were as good as this one

This guide was extremely accurate and helpful in planning our trip the Outerbanks. It continued to be useful when we arrived. We used it to find affordable resturants and activities for the whole family. We highly recommend this book.

When I think of the term "Irish," a few things come to mind: potato famine, green shamrocks, and Notre Dame Football. I also generally think of the large and prominent Irish populations in Boston, Chicago, and other areas in the North. But, one thing that never comes to mind is the term Southerner.

In his book, The Irish in the South, 1815-1877, David Gleeson brings the idea of an Irish Southerner to light by examining the nineteenth century Irish Diaspora to the U.S. and its impact on the American South. Ideas examined include the impact of the Irish on southern economy, the Catholic Church, politics, and the formation and destruction of the Confederate States of America. In all of this Gleeson implies that the reason the terms Irish and southerner are not automatically linked like in other areas of the country (New England) is they integrated with the southern culture and indeed helped to define the South.

The book is an exhaustive study of not only the Irish, but it also gives the reader a peek into the antebellum South as well. The book has given new meaning to the term "Irish" as well as a new appreciation for the impact of the Irish on the development of the South.

I read the essays on abortion and war from this book recently for my seminar on Islamic law (I didn't get to the section on euthanasia). I found the two on abortion particularly fascinating--there is one that gives the historical status of the fetus in Islamic law, and then another that discusses the contemporary Muslim ethics of abortion. The latter essay includes an overview of abortion practices and policies in Islamic and Muslim countries (there's a difference! Islamic = political structure based on religion; Muslim = secular government with a Muslim majority population).

I would highly recommend this book. Also, because of the variety of authors who have written the essays in different styles, you get a nice change of pace every chapter.

Islamic Ethics Of Life: Abortion, War, And Euthanasia is a collection of scholarly essays compiled by Jonathan E. Brockopp (Associate Professor of Religious Studies, Pennsylvania State University) and representing the observations of nine expert authors dealing with the critical interaction between Islamic faith and Islamic thought with reference to three specific ethical issues of life and death -- abortion, war, and euthanasia. The diverse essays are each are devoted to the volatile and controversial subjects while keeping in mind both the Islamic perspective and practical issues in daily life affecting such matters. A diversely interpretive yet thoughtful and highly recommended collection, Islamic Ethics Of Life is a critically important contribution to personal and academic Islamic Studies collections.

D. Moody Smith presents for us here a report and review of the state of Johannine studies in the 20th century. Who better than D. Moody Smith himself, who is no slouch when it comes to John studies. As a guided tour of what is important, what is in vogue, what was once in vogue, what is now dated, etc. D. Moody Smith excels here. This is not so much a book about the gospel of John as it is a book about books on the gospel of John, and as such has no rivals. My copy has been well used and underlined.

One of the leading Johannine scholars updates his book which is a forschungsbericht (a progress report) on the Gospel of John and its relationship to the others gospels. The work focuses solely on the twentieth century (only briefly is mentioned the church fathers who call this gospel "spiritual"--cf. Clement of Alexandria--and generally view John as the gospel attempt to supplement or add to the others). The dicussion of the book centers on the problem of John and its relationship with the synoptics gospels. Because John contains material that both agrees and disagrees with the synoptics, it begs the question, "Did John know the other gospels and if so why did he deviate from them?" In the history of the discussion some have interpreted John one of four ways: (1) supplemental to synoptics, (2) interpretative of them, (3) independent from them (the major view of the twentieth century which was advocated by P. Gardner-Smith), (4) or written to displace them (Windisch is the leading proponent of this view)

Many vintage photos of John's Island during agricultural times. Some photos of the converson to expensive homes. The comments are from a long time resident and her family's perspective on change.Some historical facts are presented about the author's family and the past residents of John's Island. The photos are the strong point and illustrate the changes better than the prose.
I would reccomend this book to anyone interested in S.C. lowcountry history and the changes now takeing place.

All the books in this series are excellent, preserving as they do moments in our history. I am especially pleased to see Johns Island represented since my mother's family were some of its own pioneers (my great-aunt and great-uncle are passengers in the boat on the cover). Many of the photos, though from another time, still have a certain familiarity to those who grew up there. In 1893, my great-grandfather also built a beautiful home on the island, facing across the marsh towards Wadmalaw. Although it mimicked the grander Charleston single houses, it was unusual in that it had 4 bay windows. Was that why he named his plantation Frisco, as a nod to the great bay city? Or was it really named to honor his lovely young bride Frances as family tradition suggests?
