...EE Parrish doesn't get into flowery language or detail, but one does get the sense of his personality. We see him disgusted when a buffalo is killed and the meat not taken care of right away (it rots and goes to waste). We find him sick for much of the journey although he never outright states what his illness was. He mentions concern for his children, especially when one of them has a leg run over by a wagon wheel.
He has a feel for the legacy he leaves behind (several children, numerous grand children coupled with his long life.)
He even has comments directed to the future descendants :-)

The book reads easily. I just wish I had more from both before and after his journey. I should read it again!

This photo book is a feast to the eye. The photographers have captured the wilds of Oregon from the coast over the Cascade Range and into the high desert. Check out Fred Pflughoft's other Wild and Beautiful books (Grand Teton, Wyoming and Yellowstone) along with Fred and David Morris' "Great Lodges of the West" and "Great Lodges of the Canadian Rockies"; you won't be disappointed.

If you want an easy to read overview of Oregon wineries, this book is it. It's organized by both viticultural areas and by wine types. The book strikes a nice balance between enough information to be useful but not so much you that won't finish it. The photos are striking and show the breadth of the Oregon wine industry. A nice touch are the side bars introducing the winemakers and pioneers of Oregon wine. If you're into Oregon wine, I highly recommend it.

This is the current bible on successful techniques used by wine grape growers in western Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia, where the climate is much different than most of California and Eastern Washington or the Okanogan B.C. Very useful, practical advice and experience.

Too bad they never did a revision on this. The very best guide to swimming holes ever!

Miles Potter takes the reader on a historically accurate and very intriguing journey through Oregon's Gold Rush Years. Mr. Potter discusses not only the gold mining history, but how these events influenced the development of Oregon, and helped shape it into the state that it is today. Mr. Potter's only omission is that he gives just a passing mention to the minor Central Cascade Mountain Range gold strikes. However, the book more than makes up for that by it's excellent coverage of the major gold fields. Excellent Reading for anyone interested in History or Mining.

i've lived in central oregon for 25 years and this book exposed me to hundreds of great canoeing lakes i did not even know existed...

Anyone who lives in Oregon Illinois or the vicinity will love this book. Anyone who loves history and wants a glimpse on what it was like years ago will also love this book. The pictures are great. I would highly recommend this book.
