Gain insights into a unique American community
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-06
An excellent, insightful collection of American stories gleaned from oral histories of the small-town community of Hood River, Oregon. Tamura herself has family from this area. Her scholarly eye focuses on the early immigrants of Japanese ancestry from the early 1900s, whose pioneering spirit and ingenuity helped them to survive the travails of the 1900s, including the Great Depression and en masse incarceration during World War II. A must read, in my opinion, for anyone seeking to study about this period in American history. I must reveal my bias, as a descendant of two of the featured "isseis," in the book. I personally do not know the author, but learned that first generation members of our families were friends. I was born and raised in the Los Angeles area, but grew up visiting Hood River with family, and have seen this town change over the past 30 years. My family and I have found the book to be honest and revealing into my grandparents' lives. The book peers into the lives of the extended "issei" community, who are now all but gone in the year 2006, but live on through stories such as those found in this book.

I moved to this area in 1983 and read this book many years ago. I plan on reading it again, because I do not remember much detail , just that it was an amazing story of her and her husband going on horseback and building a home in the forest . The road now leads to Crater Lake. I have often wondered where exactly this area is because most is National Forest. The actual story amazed me. I do not remember details, just that daily life included more than we could now imagine. She had her husband bring a stove on horsebacK! If I remember correctly I was extremely shocked to find the road wasn't paved until the 1960's! This was just a very interesting and amazing book. Sorry for the lack of detail but I wanted to write something. Surprised that it has no reviews. It was a very popular local book. She was still alive when I moved here and I remember it made local news when she died several years ago.

A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary.

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

My favorite chapters were:

1. Initial business concerns
2. Your business' structure
3. Business start-up details
5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 51 versions of this book sold; one for each state and the District of Columbia. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

Kay Atwood has done a outstanding composer of Illahe and it's history.

She has wrote so many familiar things that I have heard growing up.

If anyone is interested in learning about some of the people who started roots in Illahe will greatly appreciate this book. This book has become a family member to our family and every family member has a copy of it.

In Search of Steam Donkeys is a well writen and very informative book. At a time when there is very little information on steam donkeys other than by word of mouth, this book sheds considerable light on a rather specialized and certainly interesting topic.

As contemporary as tomorrow's edition of "60 MINUTES".

About as rare as an orchid in Antartica is a lawyer with a heart of gold. Philip Schuster, Esq., is a lawyer who belongs to this rare breed. As evidence, let me present The Indian Water Slide, a book with a small cast of characters who have been lovingly graced with the warmth of life. This book just brims with love, not to speak of the nobility even the most unfortunate among us possess. But don't let that drive the no-nonsense realist of l999 away. The Indian Water Slide is as contemporary as tomorrow's edition of "60 MINUTES", as it deals with hard reality of what it means to suddenly, shockingly discover that you might be the father of a son, now 15 years old, who you didn't even know existed. And the state is screaming for the child support accumulated during all that time.

The best book on Portland!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-21
Recently I relocated to the Portland area from California. I bought and received 4-5 different books on "About Portland" and this by far was the greatest help. This book helped me determine where I wanted to live, where I want to go on the weekend and where to eat. There is a ton of helpful information on where to go and what to do. It has become my bible for the area. If you are planning to move here or just visit- a great purchase.

0...Sept 2002- I still use this book monthly after a year and a half. Can't say enough good about it or how much it has helped me get to know where I live.
