The author teaches Oregon Trail history at Eastern Oregon State College and has liberally used excerpts from diaries and letters to give a first-person feel for his narrative. The accounts of fording the rivers make you realize that none of them were routine, but an accident could happen at any moment. You feel the heat and dust of the plains and the cold of the mountains as these pioneers did. This was the first emigrant wagon train to Oregon; their experiences aided the passage of the thousands who followed. I had difficulty laying the book aside to eat or sleep.

This book is written from the journels of my family who came over to Oregon when there was no way to get there.The hardships they endured are enough to keep tears in your eyes through half the book.The women were tougher than most men today.This is a perfect example of what it really took to make America.I'm proud to be a Wilkes decendent.I live two miles from where my family spent there first winter in Oregon.

This is a very helpful campground guide for Oregon. Each listing gives a description of the campground and its surroundings, as well as vital stats like how many campsites there are. It includes out of the way forest service campgrounds with no amenities, as well as larger state campgrounds with many spaces and RV hookups, so this is a great guide for all campers.

This is a great camping guide. It has all the campgrounds listed. It could have had another rating like beauty of the campground, but I loved it. From the description I could tell if we would like the campground or not and if it turned out not to be the nicest one, we could look up all other campgrounds in the area. The maps were helpful, directions easy and descriptions mostly fit. It's amazing how many nice campgrounds there are in Oregon! Also it is very well organized and you can find your way through the book very quick.

Excellent book, well written and very nice photos. The author has in depth knowledge about logging in Coos County and it shows. The photo format is great and some of the best that you'll see anywhere. This is social history at it's best, this is not just a train or a logging book

This is one of the most intelligently written books on the subject of alternative medicine and cancer. Boik's research is extensive and impressive. It is an essential reference tool for both orthodox and alternative practitioners.

Listing suitable canine accommodations, pet-oriented shopping, doggie daycare, hiking routes, and more, Canine Oregon: Where To Play And Stay With Your Dog is an excellent fact-filled information resource which is especially commended to the attention of Oregon bound dog owners.

I grew up in Seaside but my parents owned a house in Cannon Beach so we were considered "semi locals" and when we "went to the beach" as young children in the 50s we went to Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock, played amongst the tidal pools at Arch Cape and climbed the rocks at Indian Beach, Ecola Park and everywhere in between. O'Donnell captures not only the spirit of "A Place by the Sea", but "A Place In Time" as well. The Author brings back all the wonderful memories in a truly captivating manner. I read it through cover to cover in one day and look forward to reading it again!

I live near the Columbia River, and when I bought my new Equinox Kayak (from Eddyline) I went looking for a really good book that would describe trips in Oregon that I might enjoy. Philip's book was just the ticket. It describes dozens and dozens of waterways that can be used for something as short as a day trip to something as long as a week or more. He describes trips on lakes, rivers and bays, with most trips being most appropriate for a sea kayak, though there are plenty of descriptions of trips appropriate for canoes and shorter river kayaks, too.

Jones describes the salient issues associated with each trip, such as where to put in, take out, and hazards/points of interest along the way. He has lots of maps, though not particularly detailed (he has information about where to get detailed maps).

Generally speaking I've found the rout descriptions accurate and detailed enough to make it work. If you enjoy kayaking or canoeing in northwest Oregon, this book really belongs on your bookshelf.

The series of books by Beckey on climbing and high routes in the cascades gives the most comprehensive and complete presentation of cascades. Each peak is described with great detail and the photos and pictures are great. This is truly a great guide!
