An excellent first hand narrative with lively and descriptive writing by one of the first pioneers to help settle the untamed Northwest. Alexander Ross joined Astor's Pacific Fur Company expedition in 1810 and this is his story of the day to day struggles which he and the other men had to overcome. He left New York on the soon to be ill-fated, doomed ship the Tonquin, with a pompous and overbearing Captain Thorn. They sailed around the tip of South America, then to Hawaii and finally to the mouth of the Columbia River, all the while prevailing over many hardships during this voyage. Upon landing and without delay, the men began to construct the trading post Astoria. Ross' detailed descriptions of their adventures amidst the forces of Mother Nature, Indian relations, the Northwest Fur Company, geography, etc. makes this book a real page turner. They all had many obstacles to overcome, and as I said, his writing skills are exemplary. He devotes the last few chapters to the culture and customs of one of the local Indian tribes. The man was a keen and acute observer of all his surroundings and this is an energetic effort on his part to put it in writing.

This color-illustrated guide gives tips on how to find beach agates. Read about the likely locales where these agates might be found. The back cover alone has three illustrations showing the agates as they are found, of both wet and dry conditions, plus the third identifying what you see in the two color photos. Inside accurate color photos with descriptive text identifies the agate and jaspers plus petrified wood which means the difference between passing over a perfectly wonderful specimen of carnelian agate, colorful jasper or collectible blueblacks a.k.a. Oregon blues (they are actually beautiful black agates), rather than the basalt or "just another rock". With this book you can become the next best thing to an expert on Oregon agates. Softcover 16 pages, sized to fit in your pocket.

Allen H. Eaton: Dean Of American Crafts is the amazing true life story of Allen Eaton (1878-1962), a social worker by training who brought global respect to the crafts produced by the people of southern Appalachia, New England, immigrants, and even the prisoners of Japanese-American relocation camps. Black-and-white photographs enrich this soulful testimony of one man's search for beauty within human creation, and his drive to share that beauty beyond boundaries. A highly recommended and uniquely heartwarming addition to art history and biography.

Another highly useful and highly useable guide from Lone Pine Publishing (in Canada). The guide does not include scat, but includes selected bird and amphibian tracks as well as a bit of humor on pages 116 and 117!

The best !

For nine years this book has been my "bible" in my job as biller for a plant broker in Southern California. Although my education included two years of Latin (it helped me get the job!) I still need help in the proper spelling of plant names/species/varieties, since my boss is a great horticulturist but a very poor speller. This book is now dog-eared and falling apart, but I can't work without it. Although it was published many years ago and doesn't have the newest varieties, it still has many that the later books don't have, in a concise and readable format. I recommend it highly!
