In the ever expanding field of Latin American and Mesoamerican history, Indian Conquistadors builds on the theme as Indians as active players in Spain's conquest of the New World. The majority of the collection of essays focus on the military exploits and contributions of various Indian tribes and how their inter-tribal relations helped shape the Conquest, either through alliances with the Spanish to facilitate war against their enemies or as opposition against the Spanish. Also of interest is the essay on women which expands the scope of their influence beyond the role of translator as seen in La Malinche.

This book by J.W. Vaughn who has authored other books covering Plains Indian, U.S.Army conflicts, brings details discovered by his own archeological work to throw fresh light on seven Indian versus Army battles. The best known of these are the Fetterman fight, the Hayfield fight, the Rosebud Campaign and Major Reno's action in the valley at the Battle of the Little Big Horn.
Mr. Vaughn is a serious historian who brings an analytical mind to interpreting the signifance of the battle related artefacts he unearthed at the various battle sites. His findings open up fresh ideas on how these seven engagements developed and whilst his conclusions may not receive universal approval, his views will command respect and cause all those interested in the history of the Plains Indian wars to reconsider their own beliefs on exactly what occurred during these seven actions.

An exciting, spirited and uplifting look into our Native Americans' beliefs, values and morals. This area of study is brimming with imagery, fascination and curiosity for all ages.
We read of myths and legends from the Nez Perce, Crow, Sioux, Arapaho, Blackfeet and Shoshone tribes to mention a few. Herein lies tales of:
Creation of the world; origins of many landforms and stars; spirits and monsters in rivers and lakes; "cannibal dwarfs"; "the little people"; prophecies; animals and plants; the list goes on.
A well researched book which shines with enlightenment.

Indian Life on the Upper Missouri consists of fifteen articles written by John Ewers brings to life the culture of the Native American culture in the Upper Missouri region. He covers everything from remembrances of the days before horses were introduced into the region to the artistic depiction of this culture in the twentieth century. His prose is clear and non-academic, although his subject matter is treated in a very organized and concise manner, similar to academic writing. This book would be useful both for the academic and the casual reader. The use of graphics ties well to the writing and is used to enlighten rather than just to illustrate.
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in a study of the Indians on the northern reaches of the Great Plains.

This is one of my most treasured books, and a real find. I've shared it with Indian friends who had never known of some of these speeches. It's a book to pass on and buy again and again.
The book neatly arranges brief notes on historical settings with photographs and famous speeches of Seattle,Red Jacket,Chief Joseph,Cochise, and many others. The emphasis is on the oratory.
The Chiefs' eloquent voices could all too easily have been lost in the torrent of 19th and 20th Century North American time and events, since they had no written language. We are fortunate that these were recorded and put into book form.
The Chieftans' mastery of the spoken word allows them to express themselves in surprising ways. Much character is revealed in a few sentences.

Being a member of The Juaneno Band of Mission Indians in San Juan Capistrano, Ca. This book has given me a great bit of understanding into how our people were treated and how this lady dedicated the last years of her life to helping the mission indians in California.I'm a new fan of Mrs.Jackson's writings.

This book provides an excellent overview of the complexity of legal jurisdiction in the Indian Territory (present day Oklahoma) in the years prior to statehood. It covers tribal legal status and the loss of the limited self-government that the five tribes enjoyed prior to the Civil War. For anyone truly interested in the 'wild west' of the region this book explains WHY things were happening.

This collection of scholarly essays, mostly relating to Nahuas in the Valley of Mexico but containing some pieces on Mayan-speaking communities in Yucatan, should be very helpful to students, studied and amateur, of the American-Hispano cultures following the Spanish assault on these areas. All the selections relate directly to the lives of women in these areas, as the title would lead you to expect, but readers will find that this approach sheds light on the lives of common people generally and the social structures as seen from the below. Readers do not need to belong to one or another school of women's studies to enjoy the book and profit from it. Writing style is mostly very straightforward and in fact even vividly concrete, with little academiotic harangue.
I got hold of this book in the course of Nahuatl language study, and several of the essays were in fact valuable for this purpose. Generally, the writers assume that readers will pay close attention to Nahuatl, Mayan and Spanish language elements, but it is not necessary to actually have a background in these languages to use the work.
Contents:
Mexica women on the home front : housework and religion in Aztec Mexico / Louise M. Burkhart
Aztec wives / Arthur J. O. Anderson
Indian-Spanish marriages in the first century of the colony / Pedro Carrasco
Gender and social identity : Nahua naming patterns in postconquest Central Mexico / Rebecca Horn
From parallel and equivalent to separate but unequal : Tenochca Mexica women, 1500-1700 / Susan Kellog
Activist or adulteress? The life and struggle of Doña Josefa María of Tepoztlan / Robert Hasket
Matters of life at death : Nahuatl testaments of rural women, 1589-1801 / Stephanie Wood
Mixteca cacicas : status, wealth, and the political accommodation of native elite women in early colonial Oaxaca / Ronald Spore
Women and crime in colonial Oaxaca : evidence of complementary gender roles in Mixtec and Zapotec societies / Lisa Mary Sousa
Women, rebellion, and the moral economy of Maya peasants in colonial Mexico / Kevin Gosner
Work, marriage, and status : Maya women of colonial Yucatan / Marta Espejo-Ponce Hunt and Matthew Restall
Double jeopardy : Indian women in Jesuit missions of Nueva Vizcaya / Susan M. Deeds
Women's voices from the frontier : San Esteban de Nueva Tlaxcala in the late eighteenth century / Leslie S. Offutt
Rethinking Malinche / Frances Karttunen.
Extensive notes.

And Diehl has provided an easily usable and complete index of emblematic icons in his work. Although earlier compilations of English emblems, including those by Peter Daly, were useful Diehl's work saves the scholar innummerable hours trying to find obscure iconic references.
