For any mature surgeon(One whose training occured in the 50s or 60s) as well as any surgeon interested in the history of the turn of the century giants.would find it difficult to put down this book. The Criles,Barney and Jane were the perfect example of marital symbiosis,and their adventures are as exciting to read about as it might have been to have accompanied them.Great anecdotes of college at Yale.Medical school at Harvard and his professional career. Inspiring to say the very least. Privelidged to have known Barney as a Fellow during residency at The Clinic.

Twenty-six years after its chartering, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad had finally reached its original goal - To build a railroad 352 miles all the way from the growing seaport town of Baltimore, MD to its terminus of Wheeling, VA (now WV) on the Ohio River. The intent was to provide a transportation link for grain and manufactured goods coming east from Ohio and the surrounding area to Baltimore.

In accomplishing this goal, the greatest physical obstacle that this railroad faced in its drive to Wheeling was traversing the daunting Seventeen-Mile Grade west of Cumberland, and sixty miles later, to descend the equally-daunting Cranberry and Newburg grades immediately west of Terra Alta, WV to Grafton, and on to Wheeling. We may never learn about the actual numbers of laborers, tons of rock, and dirt either removed, drilled, or used to fill ravines to as level a grade as possible to allow the actual and safe passage of freight and passenger trains. But one thing is certain - the experience gained from this engineering feat formulated important principles for future railroad construction jobs, not just on the B&O, but for other railroads as well. It was from these "lessons learned" that earned the B&O the name of "The Railroad University of America," a sobriquet given by Mr. in his article, "

Charles Roberts' book, "West End", relates the obstacles faced by the B&O in getting up Seventeen-Mile Grade and west down Cranberry and Newburg Grades in the 1840's, plus the years after reaching Wheeling where the B&O continued to grow. Also, the various construction projects to improve on the original route over the mountains as well as the B&O's acquisition and improvement of smaller rail lines in the intervening years is covered. Charley Roberts has an earthy style of writing that seems to fit the subject matter covered, which may not be to every rail historian's liking, but the result is a volume that comprehensively covers this geographic area of the B&O that no one until now has done to such an extent. This book was the first in a trilogy that Charley later wrote, "East End" (in collaboration with Jeffrey Hollis), and "Sand Patch."

Harlan Hatcher's intricate history of northern Ohio, encompasing the early days of the Connecticut Land Company in the closing decade of the eighteenth century to the industrial growth period of the early twentieth century, uses a combination of first person narrative and biographical anecdotes, as well as other primary documents, to support and enhance a story that is both informative and enjoyable. In his remarks in the foreward to this revised edition, George Knepper describes Hatcher as having "the novelist's touch," an ability to infuse the story "with the human interest that brings life and meaning to the factual account". Beginning with a piece of western wilderness territory just south of Lake Erie, reserved by Connecticut for itself out of the lands deeded to the federal government in 1786, the surveying, settling and growth of "New Connecticut," the state of Ohio, is a fascinating story of vision and optimism by men of courage and resourcefulness.

The real strength of Hatcher's work is that demographics and dates, while important and recognized, take second place to the words of the people who shaped Ohio, lived in and loved it. He has managed to breathe life into Ohio's story and make what could have been a dusty narrative come to life in the accounts, letters, and journals he quotes. Hatcher's obvious respect for this, his native state, permeates the text and only adds to his credibility. In his closing remarks he summarizes this viewpoint, saying: ". . . the Western Reserve, aware of its background and of its strategic position at the heart of America's industries, rich in education, drama and the fine arts, rooted in the past but with its head erect, faces with equanimity the destiny which persistantly unfolds before it." This is a must read for every student of Ohio history.

Now that Hillary Clinton's improbable and stunning win in the first-in-the-Nation New Hampshire primary has entered the history books, it is time to pick this book up again and read it to truly understand how Democracy in America has been stolen.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Republicans would rather run against Hillary than any other Democrat contender. It is she out of the three top runners the Republican National Committee believe they can defeat. Diebold machines were used throughout NH, the same Deibold machines which are easily hackable and which do not allow for after-the-fact examination.

Exit polls in NH did not support in any way, shape or form the results between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, and the fact that the final results and the exit polls conformed so precisely with all other contenders, Republican AND Democrat, makes the Obama/Clinton results even more alarming and sinister.

Thousands of very wealthy, avaricious people around the world thrive in Banana Republics, using their wealth and influence to achieve a pampered and privileged existence while the rest of their society has to deal with lawlessness, lack of education, lack of health care, lack of decent infrastructure, lack of security and lack of freedom and opportunity to gain true prosperity. Americans are now facing the same kind of future and paradigm. The question is, are they going to allow themselves to be stupified by a compliant and equally avaricious Media or are they going to educate themselves and rise up to prevent it?

Erna Furman is already familiar to therapists working with children who have lost a parent. This volume expands on the work she has done as a consultant to preschool teachers and early education progams. Her sensitive and clear psychoanalytically based guidance addresses all of the usual dilemmas that any caretaker of toddlers faces. Her strong sense of mutual respect for the difficulties of all parties models what well prepared "day care" providers need to know.

WHITE MERCEDES is an extraordinary collection of poems. It is a beautiful book which I enjoy more with each rereading. Unless you have a heart of stone, you will be moved and elevated by the poetry of Sandra Agricola.

I first read this astonishing work in a class on "Unusual Narratives." I was not excited (although I had loved Stephen's sonnet sequences) due to the sheer amount of primary source material Stephens includes in this work. Once I started the work, I was quickly blown away.

Stephens weaves interviews, testimony, documents and his poetry together to form a seamless, swiftly moving testament to the White River Massacre. He writes with compassion and seemingly limitless understanding. "Song for the Captured Women" is one of the most amazing pieces of poetry I've ever come across.

It is a crime that this work is out of print, as it is one of the great achievements of American literature. Any historian or resident of the American West should read this astounding document.

Author Jack Swint brings these cold case Ohio murders back into the publics eye in his no nonsense straight to the point style of writing. As the fourth book in the "Who Killed?" series, Swint has detailed these unsolved murders in hopes someone will come forward to police with new information and clues to solve these brutal and senseless crimes.

I am confused though why Rooftop Publishing Company is not giving any acknoledgement or credit to this author. When I purchased this book online it arrived with NO AUTHORS name on the cover or anywhere in the content of the book. Also, Rooftop implies that they are the authors and this all appears very deceptive! I met author Jack Swint, and he wrote the manuscripts to this book and the ones in Savannah, Pittsburgh and Jacksonville.

Rooftops publisher needs to acknolwedge and give their writers credit.

I'm not a huge Janet Dailey fan, but I enjoyed this title so much I read it twice, thus I give it five stars.

And ALL OF IT TRUE. The illustrations are masterful, accurate and just a pleasure. Tim Truman has made a masterpiece in two acts. Don't let the graphic novel format fool you this is history and art and storytelling all in one stroke! Buy it somewhere anywhere!
