Susannah was just thirteen when her mother died. Then, to her dismay, her father decided the two would leave their Kentucky home and join a Shaker community in Ohio. Susannah hates life among the Shakers. They do not believe in families being together, and expect Susannah and the other children to forsake their ties to their parents and to the outside world. But Susannah defies all that. She is determined to help a little six year old girl, Mary, whose father has also decided to join the community with his child, escape and rejoin her mother in the outside world. But when given a chance for freedom, Susannah must choose between obtaining her own freedom or being there for little Mary. This sad, heart-wrenching novel explores issues of family, love, and loss, as a teenaged girl balances her own needs with that of the young girl entrusted to her care by a desperate mother. This is a must read!

It was my christening so I like it

This was written by my Father and Mother in 1944 as sent as a christening notice to friends and family. Due to the war and gas rationing no gathering was held but the book was the substitute. It does stretch the truth a bit and has an emphasis on the good liquor made locally. It is however based on true people and incidents. A PDF file is available if desired.

I enjoy the historic photos and excerpts in Arcadia's Images of America and Sylvania is a welcomed edition to the series. This well-researched book contains interesting photos and details about Sylvania, Ohio. Sylvania is a charming walk down memory lane for those who grew up in Sylvania and an enjoyable read for those interested in Sylvania's history. Authors Wenninger and Gindy did a wonderful job putting this book together.

Tales Never Told Around The Campfire
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-03
My interest in 19th Century western history was sparked by "Triggernometry" by Eugene Cunningham. That book started me on the path to finding out more about the real characters who peopled the west, rather than film depictions. I had heard of "Tales Never Told Around the Campfire" and it seemed to be well worth reading. My daughter ordered it from Amazon in time for Christmas and it is one of the best presents I've had in a long time. It is very readable and obviously meticulously researched. Mark Dugan is not only an fine historian but able to write in such a way as to bring out the personalities and motivations of the people involved. For me, the chapter which proved the most interesting was that of "Duck Bill"/"Dutch Bill" Hickok and his role in the McCanles killing. As a boy I had heard of it as a major battle. I had certainly never heard of Sarah Shull, an enigmatic woman if ever there was one, before this year. Mark Dugan paints a far more realistic and believable scenario where the interplay of personalities (Hickok, McCanles, Shull and Wellman) and events led to McCanles, standing outside the building, being killed by a shot from within. Other stories include a black outlaw, the lynching of women and an outlaw who was clearly, in his own way, a genius with surprisingly many talents - each of the stories fascinating and well documented. Mark Dugan is to be commended for producing such a scholarly and work whilst makng it so readable. I can heartily recommend this book to anyone looking to find out more about the West as it really was. This book has furthered my interest and encouraged me to continue to find out about the real "Wild West".

Tap into the Great Lakes - A guide to the Brewpubs and Microbreweries of Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin.

What a title! What a book! This is an in-depth review of microbrews in the Great Lakes region, and oh what a region it is! Mr. Bice must have had a great time sampling the various brews throughout the five states listed.

Having visited a few of the microbreweries, I can certainly attest to the accuracy and quality of the reviews. It is very well written and clearly understandable. The glossary of brews is certainly a useful tool when search for the perfect Scotch Ale!

I bought this book when my parents and I visited Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and i have done a couple recipes from the book. They turn out wonderfull and leave room for you to add your touches to them. I take this book with were ever i go and so far no one has not like what i cook from it. I love the outer banks and it brings back memories of them when i cook from this book. There is also niffty little snips of information in it too on local history and wildlife and food.

This is a wonderful story of what school was like 50 years ago. However, many of the incidents in the book are very real to the life of teenagers today. This is a story of history but also of relationships, friedships and life. It will make your heart smile! It would be desirable reading for teenagers as well as grandparents.
